Re: Middle-East & North African Discussion
Well, the "big international powers" walk a thin line here. If they do too little a lot of the world will look at them and yell "Where are you now!" and media will play a hypocrocy card. While if they do too much many of the leaders the people are now protesting against will get something real outside to fight against "Ah ha, I knew it! This is just because of outside infulences" and smack down hard. In Lybia it might have gone to far, but it might stop other despots getting thrown down in other countries.
So the stick the UK government might be for the better for the Libian nationals in Libya, since this is they acting, not the UK making them act. (That it would get turned into if the UK got itself to involved).
Edit: I found this http://punditkitchen.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/3efe6440-469a-46e3-a34e-1c797d583b40.jpg

Would this be a good time to point out that Ahmadinejad is not Arab but Persian?

Would it be good of someone to perhaps give us a quick summary of what's going on where as to the current state of play? I haven't had time to fully get my head around it all as of yet as things seem to be moving so quickly it's scary.

From what I know:
Yemen: protests continue in Sanaa. The protests turn violent every so often, the government seems complicit in letting pro government protesters get weapons into the area of the protests. Complicit as in they do not confiscate them.
Bahrain: protests in Bahrain have been peaceful for a while now. Political prisoners have been released by the regime. At least one exiled opposition politician is returning to Bahrain or has returned already.
Libya: Protests continue, some allege that Gaddafi has lost control over all of eastern Libya. Sporadic gunfire could be heard in tripoli tonight. Time has also reported that Gaddafi might try to sow chaos in the country through sabotage (oil) and mercenaries. Gaddafi has shown no signs of giving up power and seems determined to either die or remain in power. Time has said its source is not completely reliable. All in all the situation is sketchy at best
Egypt: Parts of a building belonging to the government were on fire this morning as protesters
demanded their jobs back. Some say the fires were causes by Molotov cocktails
Israel: Iranian warships have crossed the Suez canal on their way to Syria. Israel calls this a provocation.
Iran: Ahmadinejad has said that the protests will spread to Europe and the Americas and bring an end to our 'oppressive governments'. The Iranians also insist that the current upheaval was inspired by their 1979 revolution. They have crushed protests in the past couple of weeks though.
UN: the UNSC has condemned the situation in Libya.
China: An attempt to organize protests in the middle eastern style last week failed. There were but a few protesters and a lot of police. Chinese state media is also referring to the protests in the middle east as little as possible, if at all. Fun fact: I recall reading that the Chinese were now spending as much on internal security as on their military.
A last thing about Libya: Italy claims 1000 people have died thus far, violence has increased in Tripoli as the day has begun again and Sarkozy is calling for EU sanctions on Libya.

LIMA, Peru – Peru's government has announced it is suspending diplomatic relations with Libya to protest the violence unleashed by its leader Moammar Gadhafi against his people.
A statement released Tuesday evening by President Alan Garcia's office on its website said Peru would ask the U.N. Security Council to establish an exclusion zone in Libyan airspace "to prevent the use of that country's warplanes against (its) population."
It quoted Garcia as saying the suspension of relations would not end "until the violence against the people ceases."
Garcia noted that Libya's government "has been led for 40 years by the same person."

Had two articles about this in todays newspaper here.Shaelyssa wrote:Gaddafi, Gathaffi, Gadhaffi... I'd just like to clear it up to everyone that the actual pronunciation in arabic is Qathafi!!!!
How his name has tons of spellings when you take it into the latin lettering. One news paper in Sweden used two different spellings during the same day.
So, it's a complicated matter. (The most common spelling in swedish would be Kaddafi and Khaddafi).

Re: Middle-East & North African Discussion
The writing from arabic script (معمر القذافي as far as I know) doesn't have a direct translation afaik. It's pretty common. I get it daily with international students and departments. The translation is more or less an attempt to characterise the sound of the words. And think how easy it is to write the "sound of a word" in different ways.
Plus there's smaller things, like the use or not of hyphens, like "Mohd" or "M" instead of "Muhammad" (or Mohammed, or Muhammed etc etc).
It's not much different to John. Or Johan. Or Iain. Or Sean. Or Jean. Or Ian. Or Iain. Or Ewan. Or Iuan... etc

Second Edit: Deleted the above because it was pointless now.
Anyhow, in regards to your reaction to what Antistia said, I would love to discuss it over here, if we can both keep civilized. Well I am sure we can, but more so if all the moderators can stay calm..

CNN has reported that a Libyan air force plane has crashed in eastern Libya after refusing to bomb Benghazi. The pilots ejected from their plane.
In other news, Ahmadinejad is calling for the leaders of the middle east to heed the calls for change. It is quite Hypocritical of Ahmadinejad and one can taste the irony in his statement.
