Unfortunately I didn't get to say my closing speech, but luckily Jean-pierre's was along similar lines.
Re: [A] The Dark Arts VS The Holy Light Debate! (part 2)
I quite enjoyed the last half or so that I caught, really interesting debate and it was great finally seeing Jean Pierre "in the flesh" so to speak. The Draenei vs Stormwind Light argument was fantastic as well.

Sadly i missed it, due to IC duties as a guard. While all the so called "Faithful" were debating my guard had to deal with a dying elf, a elf pick pocket and a fresh recruit.
Also somehow the two elfs ended up flirting in the end.
Still caught a bit of the talking at the start, shame i couldn't see it to the end though.

I wrote down notes in a GHI book. I think I got all the speakers and a few questions - until Huruma showed up and I couldn't keep up so my character was all "Screw this.." and left.
I can copy-paste what the speakers said later today

Re: [A] The Dark Arts VS The Holy Light Debate! (part 2)
I wrote all of this down manually during the debate in a GHI notebook for storing it IC. There might be typos from my side as I had to write it really fast to keep up and didn't bother to check for them. But here goes:
- Wall of text:
- Jeremias Blackwell:
"As you all know the Dark Arts is something we are familiar with, we've constantly fought it throughout the wars and have seen the damaging effects it can have on us, our minds and our lands.
It is rumoured that the King allows those that practice these magics, free reign within his armies and it has spurred the council into allowing them to freely practice it within our city.
The purpose of these debates is to be able to discuss freely our views and concerns amongst each other, those that practice the Dark Arts or the Light, why one would be favoured over the other.
It is to increase our knowledge on a forever changing world and making sure we educate each other because no matter what.. we all must share and protect these lands together.
First off I'll start by answering a question many of you have been presenting to me. The question is regarding our dear Archbishop Benedictus and how apparently his fall is solid proof that the Light can be evil.
How can the Light that preaches good and love turn such a significant figure into doing despicable evil, who embraced the Holy Light only to die in darkness.
He lived a beacon, an example to many of faith and righteousness, someone we all trusted in to guide us.
Since his promotion, Benedictus has overseen the spiritual life of the people of Stormwind and all of the Alliance faithful. He provided instruction to initiate Priests, counseled the Alliance forces during encounters with the Scourge in Northrend. Yet Deathwings rise would prove a difficult task even for him.
The Twilight's Hammer message was simple, it was to destroy everything and remake the world in a perfect manner by using the magic of the Old God's, the Dark Arts.
The day Death flew over Stormwind is a day many of us will never forget. He had the capability to destroy us all, but why didn't he?
Killing everybody in Stormwind may have been counterproductive..he was after recruitment, he needed people to serve his cause..
Perhaps those that looked into Deathwing's gaze despaired, afraid of the fury he can unleash and would rather be on his side than perish. Perhaps Archbishop Bennedictus mind was taken over by corruption the moment he gazed into the eyes of Deathwing.
We all know the powers that the Old Gods have by simply placing our hand upon the armour of a Death Knight.
This is not the power of the Light, this is the power of the Dark Arts..
In the end our dear Archbishop Benedictus had become a victim of the power the Dark Arts promise, that had driven him so...so far from the Light and its teachings. If only he hadn't seen what he'd seen.
From this begs the question; can the Dark Arts really do good? Is it a power we should keep unchecked? Should we favour it over the divine power of the Light?
Perhaps those that have volunteered tonight can answer these questions."
Vardrek Ironhammer:
"Through most of tha' Alliances history we have born tha' brunt of tha' dark arts.
Spanning first frem tha' first war, through intae tha' second an third tae even this day we have stood against tha' dark arts taegether as members of tha' Alliance of Lordaeron an' tha' Grand Alliance.
In tha First war we lost Stormwind an it's territories tae tha' dark arts humans were enslaved by tha' dark horde tha' came frem tha' portal... An it wis only till tha' birth of tha' Silver Hand wis this dreadful foe combatted.
Because those of tha' light dae nut seek thanks, nor wealth nor power....we seek a better world tae live in.
An prosperity amongst tha' nations existed...until tha' plague infected Lordaeron...started by cultists....dart art practitioners...traitors...
This wis tha' opening of tha' third war....tae come...yet we did nut know it...where shadow an' fel an tha' dark arts of necromancy rent tha' Eastern Kingdoms asunder....yet tha' light protects it fought on it protected at tha' cost of their own lives.
Yet...that' dark arts...tha' arcane...whit does it wish?
Power....tha' is all it is down tae power an dominance...we have seen it in tha' many wars we have faced on this world we have seen it in outland we have seen it in Northrend.
It is inherint in tha' history we have faced whit awaits us if we embrace tha' darkness of this world....i would ask tha' people dae nut embrace malice, hate nor tha' lust fer power...
But embrace tha' simple acts...acts tha' will bring ye closer tae tha' light.
Helpin tha' defenceless tha' poor tha' ill 'ese things are whit tha' Light is about.
Altruism is tha' cause of tha' those of tha' light champion.
Can ye say tha' same fer necromancy? Can ye say that tha' Cult of tha' Damned wis a betterment to our world? Perhaps tha' Legion an its fel arts?
Or tha' Cults of tha' Forgotten Shadow tha' hail frem tha' Horde's Undercity?
I dae nut think it can be argued in such a way...but I bid people tea try."
Vaell Silvine:
"Hello everyone. Vaell Silvine, former Minister of Magic, Violet Warden of the Kirin Tor and now your neighbourhood watchful mage.
Right. Let me just begin by defining what the Arcane really is. It is no Dark Arts, it is such a general term.
It houses what makes up our entire world. Everything around you. We're all product of its deisn. It has shaped this world in both good and bad ways. I like to believe the good outweights the bad, however.
Take the Well of Eternity for example. Though, even in our vast libraries, us Dalarani still do not know the full effects of its power - we do know that it has shaped some of the most wonderful races that stand before us today.
The Kal'dorei being the most prominant.
What did that? The arcane energies.
Well... then... Let me start with the fact that there are good and evil people in this world.
Magi can use their power for the good of all man or they could use it to destroy. But that is why we study it.
No matter what, humanity and other practitioners will find sources and ways to use the Arcane. We study it to understand it and through understanding it, control it.
We cannot be held responsible for those who abuse it. Would we hold the light responsible for the downfall of Arthas?
There are always a few bad eggs and they make the loudest splash...
Now let me take you to the third war.
Yes, Necromancy is a form of the arcane and thus it is responsible.
However, it is the -people- that used the magic that should be held accountable.
What did the Kirin Tor suggest? Containment. Millions of lives were lost because the King ignored our plee.
We try to aid this world as much as any light follower. Arguably even more. We go to the greatest lengths of dedicating our lives to understanding how to face against unquestionable evils.
The Arcane can be used for good if -good- people use it.
If the Burning Legion were ever to return - and I would bet my gold that they will not...
A world without magic would fall. Many more would die than the last time. Magi can protect you.
Our presence in history has been tainted by these ill few when we should be celebrating those who have given their lives for your homes.
Dalaran fell along with Lordaeron, let me remind you of that.
It is not the Arcane that should be to blame but the corruptable hearts of mortals. Now, I believe Archmage Serpentine has a point to add.
But thank you for listening."
Arenfel Serpentine:
"My former apprentice has given me some time out of his, to expand on a point mentioned earlier by the kindly Dwarf.
If I could HAVE YOUR ATTENTION?
The writings of the Silver Hand do state that the arcane is an inherently corrupting influence, and that use or encouragement of this power is an effective damnation of your soul.
The Silver Hand was founded post-fall of Stormwind City, during the First War.
They did not protect the city against the Horde, or their warlocks. No, they did not. However...
A contingent of magi did contribute to the war effort, and defense of the city.
The Conjurers.
Think of that, for a moment. That was all I wished to expand upon, I will wait my turn to elaborate properly."
Vardrek Ironhammer:
"Thank ye lad fer highlightin me points.
Yes meages were present in stormwind...this we cannot deny...but it is known tha' it wis tha' Paladins of tha' Silver Hand tha' changed tha' tides of tha' second war instae tha' Alliance favour...it is also known before tha' it wis tha' Church who gave simple men an' women hope...hope tha' a brighter day shall come.
As fer tha' well of eternity...well i am sure we can ask our Kaldorei allies whit tha' brought tae our doorsteps...an tha' chaos it created.
Over tae ye Barrow"
Lexgrad Barrow:
"Firstly to retract a previous point, I do not believe the former minister to be a cultist, it is going far to far to claim that any of one group are such due to their vocation.
In all being that walk upon the mortal realm there exists two forces, the force that leads us to create and to build. and the force that urges us to destroy and to burn.
But these forces are not equal, we do not exist in a world of equal portions of fire and light, the force that leads us to create is the greater force, it is in us all, it is the holy light. The light leads us to greatness, from buildings like the cathedral.
A great fried called Thelos told me once that no one willingly sins, and this I believe, for when we sin we forget the truth, that we are all beings of the light. This is all the shadow can do to corrupt us, make us forget the light, it is what it did to me, to you most likely at some stage, when yuo let anger lead you to violence, or heart break lead you to vengeance.
You will hear much about the shadow this day, how it is evil and how those who use it will kill you and are to be feared. Those who use the shadow are simply lost, they can not see the light inside of themselves.
We carry weight, and sometimes we fall and the shadow closes around us. If we are tenatious we can rise, if we lack the strength then your friend should pick you up. If his strength is not enough then others shall help, there is strength enough in this city to carry all who are struggling with their burdens.
The greatest truth of the light is this, when you help others, you help yourself. The only act the shadow can do is hide from the fact that by harming others, you harm yourself.
May the virtues guide you all."
Grenier Blackwrath:
"Ladies and gentlemen, believers, magi, citizens. I am Grenier Blackwrath, and I am going to try an admittedly hard task.
I should try and convince you that the use of Dark Arts, in my specific case Fel and shadow, can be used to do good. And it's no mystery it can be.
But let's try to be realistic here. Can it be actually used instead of the Light to do so? No, that'd be foolish to even discuss. The Light in itself has powers that the Dark Arts will never have.
To heal, to mend, and to give hope. And for that, I am personally greatful every day. Sadly, this world is not a world where only good intentions exist. Sometimes, you must fight, and defend yourself, and those you care for.
Good, ehm. I'm sorry, I'm old, my tongue cheats on me. On any case, the Light sure can defend, but not enough. Shadow and Fel can't work alone, but so can't the Light. And we all have a very important example right in front of us.
When the time came to defeat Prince Arthas, a fallen paladin who lead the Scourge, it was an alliance between the mightiest paladins Azeroth had to offer, the Argent Crusafe, and the Knights of the Ebon Blade, who were able to siege Icecrown and defeat him.
Light and Shadow are complementaries. One cannot exist without the other, but it's not antagonizing each other that they can do the greates good possible, but standing together, for the good of everyone, they can fight and win for such good. The Shadow can help the Light, and fight for what's right.
As they did, and will do, as long as neither will not stay humble, and admit its faults.
With this, I conclude."
Vardrek Ironhammer:
"Tha' light an' shadow dae nut compliment each other as idealogically ey are very much diffrent...those who follow tha' shadow follow a doctrine a philosophy of power an' death...where as tha' light is a philosophy tha' builds upon tha' virtues of respect compassion an' tenacity.
If anything is a compliment tae tha' light it is but one simple honest truth.
It is tha' men an' women of this Alliance...it is tha' blacksmith tha' footman tha' knight an tha' joiner...'ese people create an' defend tha' world we live in so tha' we may grow within it.
An it is them tha' we followers of tha' light stand beside it is them who gain tha' light's favour it's warmth an' it's loving embrace...it is ey who compliment tha' light tha' hard workers we stand beside day an' night.
It is those people that tha' shadow that fel tga' necromancy destroy, corrupt an' twist intae beings we nae longer remember."
Grenier Blackwrath:
"It's a nice speech, and raises some interesting points. Still, it starts with two huge biases, which are extremely clear.
The one, you pretend to know what other people think. as far as I know, only shadow users can read minds, or even control them. Secondly, it's terribly clear that people do not need dark arts to hurt each other. In Stormwind, in particular, a gunshot is quite enough.
Light users protect the poor blacksmith? Perhaps, and perhaps here. I don't need to recall you what happened only months ago, when Light users and fervent believers, put buildings on fire in this very city."
Susan Earlstead:
"A gun isn't comprable to shadow!"
Grenier Blackwrath:
"I guess then, your point is very flawed. Is it not, milady? Can't it kill a person as much if not more fast as a shadow bolt? And, I'd add, with far less training. Mister Barrow?
Susan Earlsteed:
"Death isn't evil..."
Lexgrad Barrow:
"I would first like to make the point that we can use the shadow as a tool. but we do not use the light, it is more correct to say we are the light's tools, yet that is not quite right either. We ultimately have little choice but to be drawn to the light and to protect, it is our nature, we do not use the light.
Secondly, a point for sir Ironhammer.
This is something that I see so often now in Stormwind, Paladins who offer such a closed mind, and a zeal that makes them unapproachable. The ultimate duty of a paladin is to protect by any means, even violence, yet violence and holy fire need not be the first port of call. the cirtue of respect applies to the greatest of sinners, if a warlock or a necromancer wishes to repent then they will not approach a man who will kill them.
They will approach a priest who is understanding and patient, and who does not judge them so quickly."
Arenfel Serpentine:
"Hello! My name is Arenfel Serpentine, a member of the Kirin-Tor; and I am here to talk about the arcane - and a manner of other things - but let's get a move on.
Should any of you have questions following the speech, I will be available; now I have three points approximately. Let's move on to our first.
The arcane, and its relationship with the church. It is no surprise both parties do not get along, but such problems were highlighted when the Knights of the Silver Hand included the corrupting unfluence of the arcane in their texts.
They were the second, to document the corruptive influence of the arcane. There are four "laws", of the arcane.
Magic is powerful; magic is corrupting; magic is an addiction; magic attracts the twisting nether.
The users of magic on Azeroth do not refute the claim of the church that the arcane is a gateway drug to darker paths, in fact we educate our pupils in this fact quite thoroughly.
We also do not refuse the teachings of the Light, several members of the Kirin-Tor; quite a large number of thalassian members; are frequent prayers and devotees of the faith.
Yet... and this seems like something of a recent phenomenon... certain members of the curch, and other religious groups, seek to paint all maig as demonkind and succubi of greater magic.
Why is this?
I would ask for my clarification now.
Brother, is it true that anybody who practices or advocated the arcane arts; is effectively damned to eternal salvation after death?
Ahem, from."
Jeremias Blackwell:
"Yes, for the corruptive reasons you stated."
Arenfel Serpentine:
"Show of hands! How many of you enjoy the heat? ... A pity. Because each and every individual sitting here, is going to hell.
As denoted by the writings of the Silver Hand, we are all about to enjoy a one-way tryp to the steaming lava pits of hell.
A graveyard lays behind me, buried soldiers, farmers, workers... and magi.
Magi, such as the conjurers, such as my wife, are burief there and have been for centuries. They died laying down their lives to ensure the safety of the Alliance, Azeroth, and its denizens.
If each and every individual who either practtices or benefits from the arcane craft is damned, then surely we are too. In every major war against the Horde, Burning Legion, Cult of the Damned, Twilight's Hammer... we have used the arcane.
And as the benefactors of that usage, we are damned.
Yes, you wanted to interject, sir Dwarf?"
Vardrek Ironhammer:
"Aye on two points on on mister Barrow an' yerself.
It is stated tha' we are zealots if we disagree entirely with an ideology such as tha' shadow, tha' if tha' light followers believe it is men such as tha' blacksmith or tha' farmer tha' compliment tha' church an tha' light tha' we are heretics."
Arenfel Serpentine:
"I did not use the word zealot, sir Dwarf."
Vardrek Ironhammer:
"Barrow did I did say it wis one two points. Yer comin lad dun't worry."
Arenfel Serpentine:
"Please, do not turn this into a competition.
If this point is in regards to sir Barrow, perhaps it should have been done pending his speech; or you should counter my point. I blieve we're going over our allotted time..."
Vardrek Ironhammer:
"Well if ye would show tha' virtue of repsect an' quit interruptin me i could perhaps dae so lad.
Those who have picked tha' corruptive influences of tha' arcane arts this is a matter of choice between people this matter of choice tae follow tha' arcane arts is a relativley small one at tha' we dae nut argue tha' those who dae nut follow tha' light are damned whit we argue are those who chase after power who are corrupted by power....will bring about 'er own ruin frem dabblin in such dangerous arts.
As fer ye Barrow I believe I wis statin tha' havin faith in a normal man or woman in this Alliance is nut tha' of a zealot but rather tha' opposite."
Jeanpierre:
"Ehm.. I would like to ask this to all.. speakers.. sort of.
In the first war.. The Church of the Light did fighht. We lost our beloved northshire abbey..
And it is the death of many, many.. light and life loving priests that drove the Church to accept there was a need for a new kind of warrior of the Light.
The order of the Paladins was founded in response. And it brought us victory in the great second war.
But still it did.. not prove sufficient to last...
In the Third War we were confronted with a new kind of evil.. Corruption of both an outstanding prince and life itself with undeath.
We were pushed every more desperately.. In the Wars that followed, on Outlands.. in Northrend.. Against the aspect of death.. It seems we are ever more driven by need to surpass ourselves in our power and courage.
This very need has driven our King, Light bless him, to accept dark arts in his army. Ever more we are pushed to strive for power.. neglecting.. how that power is acquired. Power to defend life. Power to defend the ones we love and care for. Power... Does either of you not sense a plor of evil when we are constantly driven to accept this desperate search?
Both Light and Dark Arts have a message in this.
The Light.. as Uther himself reminded us.. Loves us. It loves us anyway for what we can rise to be in times of need. And Dark Arts.. Speak of a thirst for power to accomplish one's own goals.
Is it perhaps a sign of the powers of chaos and destruction that they try to trick us into a thirst to have power? All in the name to defend ourselves?
Thank you."
Jeremias Blackwell:
"Anyone who has a question or something to say?
Huruma:
"I had two things to say. Now three - one to the human in the white cowl, one ot the dward in the white cowl and another to this young one clad in white.
I will be brief.
You - Jeremias - speak words of blasphemy. You question the absolute power of the Light to grand absolution to the sinner. No sin commited by a mortal man can be so grave it destroys the Light's absolute love.
If that is what your scripture teaches you, then your scripture is wrong and you should revisit it.
Secondly. When this one - Vardek - speak of "Shadow", he speaks of cults. Some cults. It would be the same as his opponents speaking of the "Light" and merely talking about the Scarlet Crusade.
Shadow is a natural part of the world order. An anchorite of sound mind allowed both in his heart.
It is a sign of a sick church to sun one.
The Divine is twofold: Light and Show. Properly understood, they are the same."
Jeremias:
"The Church has never shunned anyone."
Vardrek:
"I speak of tha' faith of shadow and those who practice it as an arcane power lad.
Huruma:
"Thirdly. You - Jeanpierre - You are nothing but a demagogue, shouting false words. You do not define what "The Dark Arts" are. They can be anything you deem evil - and it very well shall be."
Vardrek:
"It is clear tha' ye did nut understand whit wis bein said lad."
Huruma:
"What sort of moron is going to argue that evil is good and good is evil? No one.
You humans have shown clearly today once again your lack of insight into the Divine.
Instead of preaching love and tolerance, you seek to sow discord in your people. You preach hatred, and not love.
You seek to sun those who come to you for shelter.
You should never deny those that seek redemption. No matter their sins and how sinful they are - yes.
But more than that, you insult yourselves.
This has been your friendly spacegoat. I shall now return to the battlefield. Dying for you.
Light forgive you for your sins and ignorance. You will learn."
Jeanpierre:
"Would I.. be permitted to .. reply?"
Huruma:
"If the debate leader allows. Since I am done."
Jeremias:
"I would like to remind everyone that the point of this debate is to allow those that practice the Dark Arts and the Lights a chance to have a voice together, a chance for them to speak. It is not to preach hate."
Huruma:
"Then you have failed. I would like to hear the young man in white speak. He seems sensible."
Jeanpierre:
"My point.. well.. I blieve it was a mixture of a lesson of humility and warning. When it comes to "dark" arts as they are sometimes called, they are often claimed to be corrupt in their thirst for power.
Yet, if we look at our history, we see that this quest.. this need.. is a necessity shared by many. Our history has shown us great tragedies. Prince Arthas, The Archbishop.. Even within the powers of the Light we see that status and its power does not make the person wielding it perfect."
Huruma:
"That is sensible. It is weakness of character that leads to corruption. Never the other way around. The innocent and pure of heart shan't be tainted, not by any magic."
Jeanpierre:
"And that.. I believe.. is a lesson important in this debate. We see people speak of power as if we are to emasure and choose. Which one will currpt? Which one is needed the most?
My message is.. beware.. Neither power has proven its wielder flawless. Beware of the need that drives us."
Huruma:
"There. that is good. The Light is flawless. All mortals are sinners. Good. Yes. This one understands."
Jeremias:
"Thank you for re-capping the facts thats been spoken tonight, young priest. Who else wants to ask a question?"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, I was writing this down manually and at this point I was 100 lines behind in writing and gave up as Huruma continued to contribute to that never-stopping line number. You, my good sir, type too damn fast.
