Re: Warcraft movie
He's a good director as well!
So we're probably looking at 2016 for the film.

Eh, the "live-action" part kinda put me off.
Aside from that, it kind of feels like they'll arrive a few years too late with this one, as I can't imagine the hype being a lot bigger than it is nowadays any more by then.

Re: Warcraft movie
I'll put money on them actually hitting their 2015 release goal. Reason for that? Koz's post, pretty much.
Also, this hit me in a bad place - "Jones’ producing partner, Stuart Fenegan, will executive produce while Chris Metzen will co-produce for Blizzard."
Fucking Metzen.

Re: Warcraft movie
Duncan Jones is a great director, Source Code really surprised me (in a positive way) and Moon is one of the best films, brilliant work.
But...
A WoW movie fills me with despair. And dread. And other d words.
What would a storyline be that would work in a film? How would the "humour" of WoW, the in-jokes, the nods and winks work in a film without being trite or...
Dungeon Siege anyone? Dungeons & Dragons even worse?
The chance for this to be an utter crock of shit is huge.
Still, I'd probably see it.
Doh.

I think this is true for alot of the (ex)WoW-player base...

Well, if it has a decent budget it can make something really clever. They shouldn't go for the humour of WoW imo, make it a bit more of a pure fantasy epic.

Re: Warcraft movie
I won't pay to see it, that things for certain.
At least not without actually SEEING it before paying.
While the Warcraft universe had some solid ground for good movie story telling years ago. Today I believe most of that is gone. And doing it live action I also don't really believe in.
No matter who directs, if the source material and script is not good, you can't produced that good of a movie. I believe Metzen to be 100% unaviable to come up with good stuff for Warcraft at this point in time.
I'd have more faith in the movie if they would have payed off Pixar to borrow one of their animation teams to make it fully animated. Not like they don't have the money to do something like that.

Re: Warcraft movie
I agree the story could have been better told a few years ago (before the story grew in the game). The stories in WoW really are second rate fantasy a lot of the time (not a patch on many fantasy writers, and a lot of fantasy is shite fiction anyway!). Then again... some of the Marvel story lines that have birthed the new wave of Super Films haven't exactly been War and Peace.
We're not going to see (oh I could be wrong...) someone suddenly make a Ursula Le Guin arching story out of Metzen's pap. Or a wonderfully complex drama (that just happens to have a rotting, undead lead) or something.
Sword and sandals and sorcery. Maybe it would be a modern day Krull, Ladyhawke or Hawk the Slayer. And we can all enjoy it as a secret shame...
And I will see it, I am sure of that. But whether that means I hand over money to someone...
Animation would better suit it. Though that might not "work" either, animation version of an animated character... dunno.

Re: Warcraft movie
Well warcraft in its current form is really a story of right vs wrong, with little nuance, and the nuance that their is, is slowly being eroded.
But then we have Duncan, he's great in reducing a story to its bare-bones, mainly the characters. keep it small, keep it personal, and that might be something great.
Having Anduin, or Thrall, step out of the messiah role and become human.
that would be awesome.

Re: Warcraft movie
I don't want to see it animated. I want to see it live action because at least then, if it doesn't work - they had a shot! If it does work... Ron Perlman for Thrall?!
All I want is a popcorn flick. I want to see war and large scale battles with some cheesy writing. If they do it too much like his other films, I'll be a bit dissapointed. Warcraft has always had one primary focus - war! I only wish to be entertained.
Oh and I don't want a film focusing around any lore from WoW onwards tbh. Go old school.

CGI please. :'(
I'd probably pay to see it. I just hope it's more of an alternate story that won't take too much note of WoW.
Because has always been shit, the thing that ruined the story. The only reason I play it is so that I can rp in the world of warcraft, but I dislike most content they release due to it fucking so much up.

This. The lore of Illidan or Arthas had the potential for a beautiful movie, but they killed it off in a shitty raid. The Infinite Dragonflight would maybe be too minor for a movie to themselves, but they could have made a great side-plot with a really in-depth story. But instead that entire storyline got closed with the most ridiculously half-assed dungeon ever, purely because Blizzard wanted to throw all their real stories aside so the 'Pandaren' could be the new focus.
I genuinely lost all interest in WoW lore from Pandaria, so I really hope the Warcraft movie focuses on some of the older, proper, fantasy lore. Would be awesome to see some demons and some of Kalimdor.
Re: Warcraft movie
I doubt the movie would follow the game contuinity.
They can use Arthas, Thrall, Illidan or anyone they'd like.

Re: Warcraft movie
I'm torn between expecting a steaming pile of shite with only the mildest resemblance to the game (see: every other fantasy game-to-film ever, ever, especially Dungeons and Dragons, Jeremy Irons you poor soul). Or geeking out along the lines of HEY GUYS HE'S A CREDIBLE DIRECTOR AND BOWIES HE'S DAD BOWIE COULD BE A BELF COME ON GUYS AMAZING OMG OMG.
I just...honestly don't know how it'll work. Let's be honest the WoW lore and world is a Frankenstein's monster of things that the writers thought were cool and tacked on, retcons, horrifically shitely written characters (Or worse, good characters that have been progressively wrecked), and pure 80s-pulp-fantasy cheese and silliness.
To translate it to screen you need to filter out an awful lot of mud to get the good bits.
Realistically I just expect a generic fantasy warfare/popcorn flick with some orcs and humans. And maybe some nice shots of Teldrassil.
And David Bowie being an elf.
Please.
