When the nigga-thracian isn't talking and there's no special effects on screen, it's alright. But whenever somebody needs to swear or the tech team made a special effect, I cringe >>
Swearing in ancient Rome is something I'm not actually familiar with. With Latin being the main language, I'm not sure what their equivalent would be, however, it does work to characterise people like Batiatus "The Gods proceed to ram cock and ball up arse." He is hilarious and foul mouted, it really works for him. As for when others do it, it is usually through aggression which is a common thing in modern times so I think it fits. The best thing about the language is that, even though they're speaking English, they avoid conjunctions - much like Romans did at the time, Latin being a language which lacked them for the most part.
EDIT: And Lucy Lawless was Xena! How can you not want her?
Romans were very leud.

I don't know what the culprit's name is. I don't mind swearing in films by the way, I just want the choice of swearwords to make sense for the time the film is trying to depict. That scene after they tell the romans to fuck themselves and kill the group wanting them to go to war with them, some guy yells "We break up! Go west if that's where your life is. If not, I don't give a fuck.". The last sentence OH MY GOD I cringed. Yes, romans and the seemingly more barbaric Thracians were loud mouthed people. BUT WHEN THEY SWEAR, THEY SOUND LIKE THEY GREW UP IN A 1980s AMERICAN GHETTO. Oh my god it makes me sick.
Take Gladiator, for example. Do you hear them use ghetto swearwords even once? I don't recall hearing it in that movie, and it's something I usually pay attention to when I watch a movie. There are ways to make a character come off as loud-mouthed without them sounding like they just walked straight through the crib of a profane rap artist.
Example from Spartacus: In one of the early fight scenes, some Thracian yells "I'm gonna fuck your women! I'm gonna FUCK all of YOUR WOMEN!". I laughed and went "ok big boy.". I could, before that scene was even over, rewrite that sentence to make it impactful AND time appropriate. "I'll slaughter your women and feed you their entrails!"(Or the reverse: "I'll enslave your women and feed them your remains!") or something to that effect. THAT is what a barbarian would yell, and notice the incredible lack of modern day swearwords.
The rule of thumb is, if your character is not a 1980s black person from a ghetto OR somebody living in the 21st century, your character has NO REASON to include "Fuck" in their casual vocabulary. "Shit" aswell, but to a lesser extend as it depends on the context.

Fuck is a very old word, it was used in the middle ages in England.
But I take your point.

Don't compare a movie that was made several years ago to a show that started about a year ago.
Alot has changed, for example what viewers accept these days.
You have to remember that back then it was far more unlikely to see orgies and so much swearing in just an hour.
And as Vaell said, yes Blood and Sand has slightly worse effects than Gods of the Arena and Vengeance, and I reckon that the next season will be even better than those two, so, yeah.
And the swearing fits, for crying out loud. If he doesn't give a fuck, then he clearly doesn't!
Haha.. rules.. *eyeroll* Someone should've been let out of his igloo a long time ago, this is what isolation does to your mind!

I'm totally with Ix on this. I watched half the first episode and one of the only things they were good at was depicting the arrogance of the Romans.
HBO's Rome is 10000000000000000000000x better than Spartacus.

Again, it's not the word "Fuck". It's the way they use it!
"I don't give a fuck" is a very modern way to express yourself. The vocabulary of the characters struck me as something that came straight out of a (repeating myself) 1980s american ghetto.

Clearly didn't watch Xena as a kid.
Rome and Spartacus appeal to totally different audiences. One is more sophisticated and similar to Game of Thrones, the other is more like The Walking Dead. Action packed and desperate. Both work brilliantly.
First episodes of most shows have some poor writing in. Pilots are often renowned for being something you enjoy when it first comes about and when you rewatch it years later, or if you watch it years later for the first time, you realise how much it has improved.
Take 'The Wire' for example. Pretty much perfect television by critics and fans perspectives. It is rated something like second best TV show ever made on IMDB? Go and rewatch (or watch for the first time) the first episode. It has good aspects, but some of the writing is pretty dull and it doesn't build up much.
Like this, for example. Brilliant quote. Shows what I said earlier about their lack of conjunctions and is brilliant use of swearing!

I used to watch the Sinbad series back in those days. The actor who played Sinbad is one sexy man. He was in Shallow Hal too. <3
