I can take the fort under my wing as well if noone else has the time.
*EDIT* Thohohoho. Expect something very interesting in the coming days. Hopefully it won't clutter this thread too much.

Feel free too. As long as the same overseer doesn't run the for several years in a row, things should be confusing enough for each one to remain interesting :3

I think I'll take a turn in like, five turns time, and completely disregard everything except booze, food, and a pointless side project, like building a race track or something.

Re: Dwarf Fortress
In addition, here's a summary of the current situation of the fortress:
1st of Granite, year 1055
5th year of Crowhall
With the unfortunate demise of Saevir, Ezlbag has decided to hand over leadership back to me. While I would rather not do it, I felt that it's my duty to overseer the fortress for a little while now.
Before I start doing anything I decided that an overview of the fortress would be in order.
Population 61
Mayor of the Fortress: Odrade
Captain of the Guard: Ravirian
Militia Commander: Nifty
Chief Medical Dwarf: Rentarn

Hmm...Strange. Ravirian is the Captain of the Guard. What happened to Rohwyn?
After going through previous census lists and names of recent migrants, I believe Rohwyn resigned from her post and changed her name to Zinkle. However, I am not able to confirm this as she refuses to admit anything.
Nonetheless, here is a list of the current inhabitants of the fortress:

Current situation of the fortress:
After one year under Ezlbag's guidance, the fortress larders are almost overflowing. Right now we could support at least 100 dwarves more.
Excellent work from Ezlbag, as expected from a farmer!
Halya is still badly injured. It seems she has still yet to receive any treatment. I will make sure that gets changed.
According to Rentarn, her list of injuries is as follows:
Broken and smashed right hand thumb
Broken left arm
Broken right hand
Broken right leg
Broken rib
Broken lef elbow
Continuing my inspection of our larders, I noticed that we have disturbingly many sacks of seeds for outdoors plants. What are we to do with them?
In addition, our larders have been bolstered with meat hunted just outside our fortress. The ranger Blaight who arrived last year seems to be exceedingly capable with his crossbow. So far he has brought us the following animals:
One black bear
Nine deers
Three foxes
One raccoon
One mountain goat
The barracks for our fledgling militia seem a bit crowded. I will have them moved elsewhere later on.
The mayor's quarters are somewhat lacking as well. I wonder if some artful engravings would fix the issue...
Inspecting our metal industry, I noticed that we seem to be producing almost exclusively iron axes. Right now we have almost 50 of them. While I agree that our weaponsmiths could use the practise, I can't help but wonder if there are any better ways to do this. We need steel weapons and armor!
Our workshops and storagerooms are an ever growing mess that needs to be sorted out as soon as possible.
Summary:
- The hospital needs to get into a working state post-haste. Losing Saevir was bad enough. Losing Halya as well would be a tremendous blow to us. We need gypsum plaster and soap.
- The metal industry needs to be sorted out. We need steel!
- Improve the barracks and the mayor's quarters.
- Figure out what they've been doing near the surface. I recall mining out large areas both below and above surface, but I don't think anyone told me why.
- Dig Deeper!

The Forgotten Beast Opeya Enaifebo Rithesaisa Necalo has come!
An enormous leech. It has a square shell and it has bloated body.
Its dark indigo scales are blocky and set far apart. Beware its poisonous vapors!
We have more company! Luckily it can't reach the fortress.
*EDIT*
Ahahahaha...
The giant Kat Kirartislam Kulsimnikuz has come! A gigantic creature resembling a human, almost unparalleled in size.
Say hello to our first Megabeast.

Posting here to let you guys know that this thing isn't dead.
I've actually finished playing my year and will do the write-up later. Possibly tonight since account management hates me and I can't add any more game time.
Also, it would seem that there's a new version of Dwarf Fortress out. A buggy one at that. I think, anyway.

Re: Dwarf Fortress
It's finally done. Hopefully the story will make up for the wait.
6th of Granite, 1055
As I already mentioned, getting Halya back on her two feet is our top-most priority. With this in mind I've started exploratory mining in order to find gypsum deposits. The layers near the surface look promising so I will continue to expand the tunnel I began when I started looking for bituminous coal.
In addition I also told others to start building the proper workshops for soap manufacturing. Rentarn tells me that infections can be dangerous if not treated properly and Saevir's fate only confirms this.
9th of Granite, 1055
As I predicted, we struck to a gypsum deposit. With this newfound resource we can start producing plaster powder to make casts for Halya's broken bones.
Our soap production capabilities are still nonexistant, unfortunately.
15th of Granite, 1055
Everything is in working order now. Soon enough Rentarn can start treating Halya.
19th of Granite, 1055
Things are starting to look serious with Halya. Her complexion is a lot paler than it used to be.
I fear we might be running out of time if we are to save her.
22nd of Granite, 1055
I noticed only just now how many animals (or pets, as some call them) we have loitering around. Looks like we'll be getting more meat on our plates soon.
I hear kitten tastes especially good. However, I think we'll leave the bears alone. We really need them as war animals. Not to mention
that no sane person tries to butcher a bear.
25th of Granite, 1055
Rentarn has been performing a series of surgeries on Halya for days now. If Armok wills it, she might just recover from her wounds and be able to return to her work!
However, this situation revealed how lacking our healthcare really is. Would the situation get any worse, Rentarn would be overwhelmed with work. To remedy this I made Elloa "volunteer" to work under Rentarn's tutelage.
2nd of Slate, 1055
Some migrants arrived only an hour or two ago. Everyone is still somewhat busy and anxious due to Halya's condition, but I suppose we'll have to list the newcomers soon. I'll have Thenkar compile the list. And yes, Halya is still under the knife. How long can it possibly take?
3rd of Slate, 1055
Nifty, the militia commander, told me that Gashville has grown fairly attached to his pine shield, taking it to wherever he goes.
A pine shield?! Who de we even have pine shields in the first place? Sounds downright elvish to me!
I should have them all burned, really...
Regardless, here is the list of newcomers to the fortress.
Aislin (Butcher)
Amaryl (Animal Caretaker)
Axio (Fishery Worker)
Ephitos (Engraver)
Etular (Fisherdwarf)
Goggy (Miller)
Grufftoof (Siege Engineer)
Gunnell (Herbalist)
Kozgugore (Trapper)
Lephia (Miner)
Mansfield (Leatherworker)
Marrenus (Fishery Worker)
Miralee (Potash Maker)
Nathinios (Mechanic)
Raelan (Suturer)
Sharkhan (Glassmaker)
Tashun (Woodcutter)
So many useless people...Perhaps the militia could use a new squad of dwarves. I'll have to think about it. But at least we got a properly trained doctor to work with Rentarn.
4th of Slate, 1055
Despite Rentarn's best efforts Halya succumbed to her wounds. At this rate we'll need more tombs...
Not to mention that we're now one capable miner short. That Lephia girl claims she can mine but I won't believe her untill I see her work myself.
All these deaths...Perhaps I should prepare a proper mausoleum for myself. I'm the oldest dwarf in the fortress, afterall. Even I won't live forever.
14th of Slate, 1055
Seeing as we still lack a well after I had the previous one sealed off, I had a new one built in the lower caverns. I will have the mechanics to build some traps around it in case we get any unwelcome visitors from the lake. I don't want that giant toad incident to be repeated a second time.
16th of Slate, 1055
As I already mentioned earlier this year, our food production needs proper rooms dedicated just for the task. With this in mind I carved new areas near our farmlands. I will have it expanded later on, but for now it includes several stills, kitchens, a farmer's workshop, a butcher's and a fishery.
On a side note that new girl Lephia made me realise just how ragged our clothes are. We really deserve better! I will have a working clothing industry set up as soon as possible!
27th of Slate, 1055
Blaight, our ranger, seems like an interesting person. Earlier today he returned from the hunt empty handed. According to him he had run out of crossbow bolts while hunting a fox. After pinning the fox with four bolts he had simply shrugged and left to fetch more ammunition, leaving the fox to die there.
A sadistic hunter. I like it.
28th of Slate, 1055
The caverns echo with strange screeches. I fear that more monstrosities have been attracted to the area by our glorious and prosperous fortress.
4th of Felsite, 1055
Armok save us! A terrible giant approaches us! I've ordered all dwarves to flee inside the fortress.
6th of Felsite, 1055
Everyone managed to run inside in time before we raised the drawbridge, but now we have an angry standing on top of that monument we built last year. Frustrated because we denied access to the fortress, he keeps throwing statues around.
Now to figure out how to kill him...
8th of Felsite, 1055
I've ordered Blaight as a sharpshootern atop our tower. With some luck he can at least wound the beast.
17th of Felsite, 1055
An elven trade caravan was seen in the horizon. The giant is still outside the fortres. I think we all know how this will end.
19th of Felsite, 1055
The giant chased off the elven caravan with surprisingly few casualties. Should I feel bad for the elves or for the fact that so many of them survived?
7th of Hematite, 1055
Seeing as Blaight was unable to snipe the giant, I've decided to send the militia to deal with the creature. The giant wasn't really able to kill that many unarmed elves, so I hope he won't manage to kill too many armed dwarves.
But before I send them to battle, I will have them all wield proper steel warhammers like proper dwarves.
16th of Hematite, 1055
The squad is on the move and has managed to lure the giant out. Armok guide them through this battle!
I will observe the battle from atop our tower.
17th of Hematite, 1055
The giant is no more! Our brave dwarves engaged the giant without hesitation. Things looked grim at first as the giant's charge sent one of our fine soldiers slamming against a cliffside. However, the tide of the battle soon turned as our soldiers managed to surround the monster and knock him down on the ground. The creature's pained roars were probably heard even back in the mountainhomes as the soldiers proceeded to mercilessly hammer him to death with Blinkie finally smashing the creature's skull.
We left the giant's body to rot there just to further humiliate him.
18th of Hematite, 1055
It would seem that while our militia was fighting the giant, we had an election for a new mayor.
From here on Thenkar will be the mayor of Crowhall. I have full faith in his capabilities.
23rd of Hematite, 1055
Today two black bear cubs were born in the bear pit. Soon we can start training our first war bears!
1st of Malachite, 1055
As promised, I've started carving new barracks for our soldiers. I suppose it was about time, since they didn't seem to be very happy with the rather crude conditions they had to train in.
4th of Malachite, 1055
More bear cubs. Grizzly bears this time.
In other news I've deiceded to descend through the adamantine vein to gain access to more of that previous ore. After decending few layers I stopped, not daring to dig deeper.
I also suggest that noone else digs through this vein any more. I fear such action would bear grave consequences. If we want more adamantine, we'll have to search for another vein.
16th of Malachite, 1055
Our heavy steel industry has left us starved for iron ore. Looks like we'll have to start mining for more.
26th of Malachite, 1055
I finally got around to organizing our workshops. We also now have a fledgling clothing and leatherworking industry.
New clothes! And it's about time too.
9th of Galena, 1055
I've decided to start looking for a new adamantine vein.
Not much else to report for now.
19th of Galena, 1055
No sign of adamantine so far.
While I was mining through the depths of the earth, I received a word that a human trade caravan was approaching the fortress.
More wealth for the fortress is always welcome, I say.
23rd of Galena, 1055
Adamantine! And it seems like a rich vein, too. I will mine few layers of it and then leave the vein alone for now.
1st of Limestone, 1055
I've decided to expand our holdings in the caverns to increase our spider silk collection rates.
The militia will have to move out to guard the caverns so that our masons can build a new perimeter. I really don't want any nasty surprises.
5th of Limestone, 1055
The masons have started their work under the watchful eyes of our militia. The area we are going to expand to has plenty spider silk, some of which seems to be from giant cave spiders.
Said creatures being the rason why the militia was brought along in the first place. A spider the size of a horse is not something you just simply step on.
6th of Limestone, 1055
With the masons busy, our militia commander Nifty ordered her soldiers to explore the caverns a bit. However, this expedition soon came to an end as word came from the masons that they were having troubles with the giant cave spider webs.
Fearing that the movement may have caught the attention of the web spinner, Nifty ordered the soldiers back on guard duty.
Giant cave spiders are known to be dangerous ambushers that can take down a dwarf before she even knows what happened.
9th of Limestone, 1055
The expansion operation was finished without any mishaps, apart from Mandui getting stuck in the webs several times. How does she do it?
Nonetheless, Nifty's expedition into the caverns gave me an idea... Perhaps a properly prepared expedition would soon be in order.
12th of Limestone, 1055
It would seem that our cooks have managed to prepare us acorn fly brains. I'm not sure what to make of this.
25th of Limestone, 1055
Things have been quiet lately. Perhaps we should begin our preparations for that expedition.
4th of Sandstone, 1055
I carved a small corridor through which the expedition will enter the caverns. The corridor will be lined with traps and blocked with a door to prevent any hostile incursions into the fortress proper.
7th of Sandstone, 1055
Nifty's expedition left today. Armok guide them through the darkness.
*From the journal of Militia Commander Nifty*
8th of Sandstone, 1055
The caverns have been quiet so far and the morale is high. We will venture further into the depths of the caverns.
After hours of traveling we came across an underground lake. We will set up our camp and rest here.
9th of Sandstone, 1055
While traveling alongside the lake we saw some disturbing creatures in the water. The beasts seemed to be nothing but floating guts and flesh. Just what manner of creatures do these caverns hold?
10th of Sandstone, 1055
Today we reached the shores of yet another underground lake. Or perhaps it's even the same lake. It's difficult to say for sure. Nonetheless, unless we get boats from somewhere we cannot advance any further.
We will rest here for now and then start making our return.
11th of Sandstone, 1055
Just as we were about step back into the safe corridors of our beloved fortress we received a word that Lephia would be coming down to open a new passage for us.
And thus our expedition continues.
13th of Sandstone, 1055
Something is here...We can hear noises in the darkness. Several creatures, judging by the sounds.
We will advance with further caution from here on.
14th of Sandstone, 1055
We're getting closer to the source of the sounds. I have to admit that I'm hesitant to get closer, but the honor of the fortress demands that we press onwards!
Olm men! We stumbled upon a tribe of Olm men. The foul beasts attacked us as soon as they saw us. We ended up killing almost the entire tribe in our self defense before falling back.
We are tired and our supplies are starting to run low. We will have to head back for some proper rest.
Once we get back I will have to make sure to mention Swatti's exceptional bravery during the fight. He singlehandedly defeated five Olm men.
I will also have to thank Bennedict for crafting us these fine steel armors that kept us alive through the battle.
*The excerpt from Nifty's journal ends here*
23rd of Sandstone, 1055
It's been a week since Nifty's expedition returned from the caverns. Swatti's tales of the adventure seem to be fairly popular with the children since there hasn't been a day he hasn't been asked to tell them a story of the expedition. And I swear the story is different every
time...Last time I heard Swatti crushed the skull of a cave dragon with his bare fists.
I also received a word that a lone human swordsman is standing outside our fortress. He doesn't seem to be hostile, but we really have no idea what he is up to.
3rd of Timber, 1055
I don't know the exact details, but apparently an enraged deer chased some of our dwarves into the fortress. Strangely enough the deer also followed them well inside our holdings but was eventually caught by one of our cage traps. I wonder what we should do with the animal.
To the bears, perhaps...?
13th of Timber, 1055
Today we received guests in the form of a trade caravan from the mountainhomes. Seeing as we don't really lack anything at the moment, I had Thenkar buy as luxurious items as he could to impress the traders.
A few more tall tales about our tremendous wealth wouldn't hurt...
2nd of Moonstone, 1055
I know I had new, larger barracks built for our soldiers, but I just had a great idea on how to train them even faster. It will require some extra work but I will report the results of this idea as soon as I can.
20th of Moonstone, 1055
The caverns echo with new voices...Something is coming. Something terrifying. Nifty and her soldiers went down into the caverns to see if we are in danger. I hope for the best but fear for the worst.
22nd of Moontone, 1055
Nifty and rest came back today. Whatever the source of those fell screams was, it's gone now.
Hopefully it isn't coming back.
7th of Opal, 1055
It's mid-winter now and everyone is enjoying the peace and quiet. Most of us are content with just boozing through the days. Me and a few other select dwarves are still working on the barrack project, although I have a feeling I won't get it done before the end of the year.
6th of Obsidian, 1055
Our fortress is starting to get flooded with bones, hooves and other parts of dead animals despite our craftsdwarves creating new trinkets day and night. Perhaps someone should tell Blaight to stop hunting soon...That man is so efficient it's almost scary.
In the meantime I decided to carve new areas for waste deposit.
10th of Obsidian, 1055
Jakins started acting rather strangely today. I wonder what he's up to...
15th of Obsidian, 1055
After hauling huge piles of materials to the workshop he claimed, Jakins finally started working on his project.
19th of Obsidian, 1055
Jakins finished constructing a set of mechanisms out of unrefined copper ore. It's actually surprisingly beautiful, considering the materials it's made of.
28th of Obsidian, 1055
The year is coming to an end and my project is still unfinished. My plan was to have the militia train in a "danger room" full of training spears coming from the floor and linked to a mechanism that would keep them moving.
What could possibly be a more effective way of training than sparring in a room full of spears that are trying to impale you?!
However, that will now have to wait as I grow tired of leading this fortress. Whoever decides to pick up from where I left will have to make sure to finish the project as well as make sure our holdings in the caverns are safe.
A roof atop our head would do wonders in there. I don't want any winged nasties attacking us.
