True. Still, basically it's a case of "Saying 'That's so [insert skin colour here]' is wrong, so why isn't 'That's so gay'?". Quite frankly, I, myself would allow both of those comments to be acceptable if I had power - but since I don't, I feel almost obliged to give homophobia the same attention that racism and what not receives. Then again, it most likely won't stop any harsher insults... Still, it's a start.

I see your point, but quite frankly, it's all about misdefining racism. Racism is to speak and think derogatory towards other races / sub-groups, considering yourself superior. It's intentionally harming them because of the said attributes. That's got nothing to do with being all touchy and retardledly "politically correct". See? I said "retardedly". Does that mean I am a racists towards actual retards? No. It's like saying "if you say the word Germans and/or make any joke that includes a German, that means you are against Germans". Griefing and offending is when you target someone personally and attempt to harm them, whether emotionally or physically. Making a joke hardly counts as negativity.

It's the difference between actually being offensive ( "you fag, I'll ruin your life" or "<insert hurtful comments>") and "someone taking offense". "Someone taking offense" has a strong possibility it's their own damn fault they "took" that offense, when it wasn't even directed at them.

The main point, in my eyes, is the fact that people would use these terms as another word for "bad" - therefore, hinting at superiority. "That's so gay!" and "That's so retarded!" are basically just people saying "That's so bad!", therefore, the image that people (more specifically, children) get when they hear these comments is "Gay = Bad" when, in reality, we all know "Gay =/= Bad" (despite some homophobes that may disagree). Children grow up assuming these things, their thoughts eventually mould and form - next thing we know, we're hearing far worse from that child that "That's so gay!". These once innocent children are found graffiti-ing homophobia on people's walls, attacking presumed gay people and (in one real life example) saying that they believe all gays should rot in hell, and if they ever met a gay they would give them eternal torment (keep in mind, this example was from someone my own age...).

Saying the word, itself, is not offensive (e.g. German); however, to say "I stood in some dog muck, that's so German!" (thus, suggesting or implying that the dog muck is in some way related to Germany and/or Germans as a whole) may be considered a little more discriminatory against Germans. Replace the word "German" with "Gay" and you're suddenly using Dog muck to describe Homosexuality now.

Then, ofcourse, there's the whole equality think that saying "That's so [skin colour]" is considered severely racist, but "That's so Gay" will barely cause anyone to protest... In that case, I agree fully with you, it's mostly how people perceive the word/phrase - but it seems that some idiots (mostly children and teenagers, though young adults are prone to this also somewhat) perceive it in the wrong way, and tend to use it as a reasonable excuse to be offensive to these people specifically. In this case, I'm in reference into what the offender thinks of the phrase and why they use (mostly, the answer is along the lines of "I thought it meant bad?") it rather than the victim's opinion of it.

That's all sweet and nice, but it still doesn't contradict what I said. "Gay" meant "happy". Neither "bad" nor "homosexual". Words have the gravity we give them. When my gf tells me "do it, faggot", I'm quite certain she does not think I am a homosexual. Words are just that: words. If you mean them derisively, it can be seen from the context. "That is so gay" has as much to do with the homosexual people as Mars chocolates have to do with the planet.

"It's all Greek to me" is an expression. Should I be offended by it? Nah. Not really. /care

Because it kinda was a separate thread than the "I got hacked", so a split was in order, as it is a somewhat more serious topic than the usual derailings and it deserved its own topic. I don't remember any other thread made regarding the issue, as you say "fifth thread", and it just might help people develop some form of understanding that just because they read a word they don't need to be "offended". It's about being "offended" in general, as I've personally received several reports of posts with the reason "I was offended!!" and there was fucking nothing there. Don't you agree it'd be the mature thing to discuss this topic responsibly and put some things into perspective?
