Also been rocking the Persona series myself.
Gotta say they're a strange genre blend, but really quite enjoyable, all the more so as I'm following the anime of Persona 4.
My thoughts exactly. The story is just heartwarming and amazing and the way it's delivered is true storytelling craftsmanship. I believe it was seriously under-rated however. People tagged it as "The game to play while waiting for Final Fantasy 13". Well, I think it's safe to say Lost Odyssey was the High and FFXIII was the comedown/hangover in comparison. Not that I didn't like FXIII

I also don't believe it recieved as much attention as it deserved, I mean it was awesome, sadly reminded me of that joke people made about another game close to my heart, Zone of the Enders, joke being that people bought the game that came free with the MGS2 demo.
Prepare for much ignorance on my part...
I didn't play Final Fantasy 13 for one reason.
I knew I wouldnt like it. After the abysmal final fantasy twelve (aside from final fantasies answer to Han solo = Balthier ) I decided that while series' do need to change in order to draw new audiences and remain fresh for existing ones, from what I'd seen of FFXIII's game play it seemed more akin to a menu based DMC kind of fighter than my beloved turn based combat (call me old fashioned but I do miss turn based combat), dont get me wrong though, I do love my Devil may Crys and Bayonetta's, but I still like my genre distinctions.
But aside gameplay it was more a sort of... Feel.
From an outsider who's played FF's 7-12 (whose counting 11, amirite?) it just seemed somewhat stale, like I'd really seen it before, but then again...
Any franchise now into it's 13th game may have to scrape the barrel at some point, I mean where else can you stick all the androgynous whiny characters that have as much personality and depth as loft isulation, if not in a blender?

Re: The "other game thread"
That's a shame you felt that way. I believe it deserves a chance at the very least. The story is it's main attraction along with the unthinkably high production value.
I don't remember which FF it was (If someone could point it out to me that'd be ace) but they've done a similar battle system in the past where you had a time-bar you had to input your commands in by before it ran out.
As far as I'm aware it was the fans who asked for something like this and then moaned when they where given it (Which is the case far too often). They watched FFVII Advent Children and said to SE "Why the hell do we not get these awesome battle's?!" Final Fantasy 11 lifted the curtain on real-time battle and then they expanded upon that in 12. In 13 they hit the ceiling with it and 13-2 they've took a step back. Random encounters with a realtime battle system.
Bare in mind that the only reason they did turn based back in the day was because of genre expectations and hardware limitations. Imagine having 4v4+ where you control every character and input commands back on a PS1. I can't think of a game that did that and still remained single-player.
Realistically looking however, the ATB battle system is still turn based. It's not DMC at all, as how you described it. You input your actions and wait for your turn/time to 'do' them. As with every other character on the screen.
It could have been more than it was if it simply opened up a little bit more, as much as possible without loosing any story focus, to allow some exploration and meaningful side-quests. FFXIII-2 addressed that though and the story suffered as a result. It does not has as much focus as 13 did with it's linearity. I guess fans need to be careful for what they wished for. I'm sure we all play FF games for the story and not the side-quests.

Aah, see?
This is why I'm happy to have been informed by someone who's played it. Like I said, I was viewing it ignorantly as I didn't play it, thanks for filling me in however!
To be honest though, the older games still sit proudly on my shelf, but I remember them through a Rose tint, as im sure many of us do.
In truth as I've grown I've lost interest, I don't hate the games, but just lost interest, I tend to live in the realms of horror now as opposed to my roots as a JRPG'er to which I'll add, does anyone remember Golden Sun, or Breath of Fire series?

Re: The "other game thread"
Yeah to be honest fans of final fantasy enjoy the type of game they where on the ps1-2. What 13 was made to be was a show-off. Like "Look at what we can do, it's like an action film but in the form of an rpg!" the die-hard fans shuddered and with 13-2 they tried to fix that with a bit of fan service but not enough really, it was more like a hybrid of the two. Neither aspect great but neither bad. Hopefully the remake of FF10 will be a true and proper fan service. As for final fantasy 13 versus I am a little sceptic for a few reasons. I don't believe it will ever come out and from what I've seen of it looks nothing like a final fantasy game. It's ultra-modern and quite dark. I think what they need to do next is round up 13-2's story through a dlc or something and then work on a remake of 7,9 or 10 or a new game that is a true and proper fan-service.
When playing the newer FF games, try to look at them as JRPG's and not Final Fantasy games. It's the only way not to be disappointed.
I think I better stop talking about final fantasy incase Eira makes a new thread for me haha. Sorry!
Does anyone trade their games in when low on cash? When I rebought an xbox I promised myself I'd keep a collection of games and not trade one in unless I hate it but I'm finding myself tempted with BF3, Space Marine, Crysis 2 and Gears of War 3.

Not everyone has Xbox abd Ps3. Focusing on computer here, ps2 was just some family-shared fun.

Yeah, the article author is reading into it too much. They said they're exploring options for console with all their games, no specific "GW2 will be console."Eowale wrote:Disregard my earlier post, I acted before reading. Shit. I'll be playing Tera over GW2 for sure, the artstyle may suck but the potential of Tera's endgame is too good to pass up on.
Really disappointed with the ME3 demo. I knew it was most likely gonna be worse than 1, but I didn't think the dialogues would be that bad. And what's with that running animation? At least they made it slightly more interesting to level up your skills in this one.

Don't know what this means.
If it's on xbox, ps3 and PC this means you won't be playing it on PC? :S

What does Skyrim have to do with GW2? Skyrim is a first person, singleplayer RPG, not an MMORPG. They're both completely different things.

Re: The "other game thread"
The main reason why ME3 is quite shit, is because it's based for consoles. It's press space to win, all over again. Battleifled: Bad Company 2 had the exact same problem, it was based on console, which made the hitbox absolutely shite and gameplay way too easy on PC.
GW2 = MMORPG. MMO's are by default based on PC. If it does go to consoles, how will it possibly work? They'll have to change the game for PC to make it fit with the consoles. Imagine WoW on Xbox360, with alot of kids yelling when they get their loot ninjad. How would implementing it on consoles without changing it from the PC version work? It wouldnt. There's way to many keybindings. It wont work without having to simplify the PC version. I don't want that.
STALKER is amazing. I usually sit on Skype with a empty tube when my pal plays Call of Pripyat. Why? Cause the empty tube makes the exact same sound like a Bloodsucker. He jumps in his chair and shit bricks.

It takes about 1½ hour to complete and it's not really a game in the traditional sense as much as a story that you walk through.
Just so that it doesn't get ruined by having the wrong expectations of it
