"Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi has told the BBC he is loved by all his people and has denied there have been any protests in Tripoli."

Ahahahahahah

On a side note, respect to the French. They landed two planes filled with commandos in the Libyan desert and took their citizen to safety.

Yeah, despite some of the stereotypes the French really don't f%$& around when their citizens are at risk.

That interview just boggles the mind!

Vaguely off topic. Relating to a situation caused by the protests, and doesn't warrant it's own thread, so it'll do.

The ministry of defence is so damn cheap it makes me rage.

One of the R.A.F C-130 aircraft sent in to pick up civilians from the Libyan desert, had a bullet (Presumably a 7.62x39 AK47 round, judging by reputation and what both sides have been seen to be using) enter the cockpit and bounce off the pilot's helmet.

Regardless of the aircraft's role as a logstics/transport plane, it's still a military vehicle. Why does a military aircraft in active service not have enough armor around the cockpit to stop a 7.62 round? It's not as if the extra few millimetres of armor would add significantly to the weight of a god damn transport aircraft that lugs around tons of gear half way across the globe.

Bonecrushing facepalm.

hmm thats a very good point,.. thow you have to remember a lot of the raf's fleet is filled with aging arcraft that have eather not been replaced or have just been refitted for the current needs, do remember the R.A.F C-130 aka Hurrakanes are an old and aging arecraft that is due for retirment and replacement,.. adding extra armour to an already fully built aircraft is extreemly complex and expensive,.. as a result it is usualy and in this case most likley cheeper to simply buy better arecraft when they are avalable,..
BUT as the current and previous english goverments have kept cutting down budgit costs to the forces they have not been able to update there equipment as much as the would like

(all easy stuff to reserch realy) shocking but welcome to the last 20 years of british governess Razz

If it's going to war, regardless of if it has two decades or two years left on it's contract, it needs to have more than a bit of plastic stopping it from going down.

It's true, the RAF is full of aged aircraft, but that's no excuse to not have them properly protected against the most common weapons in use by insurgent and terrorist forces seen on today's battlefield. I'm not expecting them to survive a direct RPG hit or anything like that, it's just the thought that a single bullet could bring down a plane for lack of a sheet of steel.

The fact of the matter is, it wouldn't be difficult to apply in practice. Aircraft designers conveniently overlook the simplicity of the matter at hand to squeeze more profit out of their contract.

I won't drag the thread any more off topic. >.> <.<

Sigh. UN wants to sanction Libya. EU wants more and tougher sanctions than UN. USA wants military actions.

There's a french saying that goes "L'histoire se répète".

There was call yesterday by Hilary Clinton (and I think action, or the beginnings of) to block or remove Libya from the UNHRC... and calls to remove Gaddafi, again. Take them as you will. She also stated (not reported as much, but very strong words for the US especially) that the "bias toward Israel" within the UNHRC much end. The bias that usually is strongly US led.

As for the French. Of course they're cheese eating surrender monkeys. But the FFL and others are top of the game really. I'd like to imagine that the SBS/SAS are working in the desert wells to get the remaining British outta there. But doubt David Scameron has actually acted properly at all yet. The useless twat.

Edit: The MoD "question" summed up (even by a politician!!!) here quite well: Telegraph Article

The MoD recently scrapped 9 "new" Nimrods. They cost £4bn. And they scrapped them. Whether they were not right for the task, out-dated, whatever, isn't the point. Its the fucking out and out disgusting waste of money that comes from throwing away something that you HAVEN'T EVEN FINISHED PAYING FOR. And you STILL have to pay more. Oh, and you have to waste millions scrapping them anyway. Because you can't scrap them yourselves. You need to tender that to the open market too!

The MoD has for some time paid for contracts THEY have broken. Contracts that the firms who fiddle and set tender rates at inflated/deflated levels have no way of actually filling on time or on budget. So the MoD just pisses money away into the wind. And yes, can't give proper armour to planes like the Hurricanes. Or plate armour on APVs. Or even body armour to ground troops.

cheers

The SAS have been deployed getting people out as far as I'm aware, but i'll bet you 10 quid that's not thier real mission.. Gaddafi said the only way i'm leaving is if you kill me..

SAS might be getting ready to give him his wish?

British and American special forces along with their counterparts from France and Germany (and possibly Israel?) have likely, or reportedly been on the ground for some time. Like you say, it's not just about extraction. There will be deals made with the new local leaders, strategies being placed to "help reach a solution". Whether the bullet is fired by a man named Smith I dunno... we won't find out the truth of the matter for a long time anyway.

But I do think there's definite push to "help him on his way out" whilst also looking like "we're helping Libya liberate itself".

Qathafi is crazy ... in the UN last year, he made a "proposal" to fix the Palestine-Israel conflict: make a new country called Isratteen ...

(you can find the full speech somewhere on youtube)

I sincerely feel sorry for the guy. he is mentally deranged.

The United States is repositioning ships and aircraft for possible military action. The BBC speculated that the USS Enterprise might be redeployed from the Red Sea to the coast of Libya. Cameron has also stated that the British government is developing plans for a no-fly zone. This seems to be confirmed by what the US ambassador to the UN said. The ambassador states that the US is actively and seriously considering establishing a no-fly zone and is talking with NATO and other allies.

I like what I am seeing, I hope the USS Enterprise is redeployed or US/NATO aircraft from Italy are deployed to make the no-fly zone enforced as best it can be.

If any country get involved in it by any action, very much so millitary one, we are so screwd. To quote an American general: "Anyone who advices the President of the United States of America to enter with or without force into another eastern or African country, should be sent to be tested by a Doctor. Something is wrong in his head, that's certain."
