It's proper to put signs on both ends, to prevent friendly and non-combatant casualties. Hence the order. Areyah is many things, but an indiscriminate butcher she is not. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] (thus they more appropriately serve a similar role as barricades and barbed wire).

Which reminds me: For those looking to clear the mines, keep in mind, they are in clear line of sight of Northwatch high ground. Expect snipers to attack anyone that they see trying to clear the mines from the other end. This is not saying they can't be cleared. Clear them by all means. Just keep it risky!

Two updates.

(Tuesday, July 23rd)
Alliance forces at Northwatch were busy preparing for the attack on Forward Command. Supplies from Stonetalon (what ones made it past the kor'kron and "rebel" attacks) were quickly put to use, and the dwarves have been busy repairing their steamtanks after they received battle damage when they ran the blockade a week earlier. Three have been restored to working condition.

Meanwhile, Wild Tempest embarked on an operation to purge the corruption afflicting the Overgrowth. After clandestinely moving through Dustwallow Marsh, they arrived at the southern tip of the Barrens. There they found the source, in Razorfen Downs. The quillboar, under Gertrude Snarlsnout, were in the process of summoning a dark and shadowy god spoken of in some ancient troll legend. With the assistance of some unexpected allies, Wild Tempest managed to close the gateway and eliminate the corruption.

(Wednesday, July 24th)
War! The Alliance rolled out to reclaim Forward Command from the kor'kron. Unfortunately for the Alliance, the kor'kron were well-prepared. After the first three attack waves failed to breach the defensive lines, the Alliance was forced to send its entire remaining reserves into battle. Though they finally managed to rout the Horde from Forward Command, the Alliance suffered heavy casualties and gave the kor'kron more than enough time to secure any important documents and supplies and withdraw their siege weapons back to Fort Triumph.

Ultimately, the victory was a hollow one. Mountains of bodies--mostly Alliance--still surround the hill even after protracted efforts by Wild Tempest and other groups to clear them. Bonfires burn late into the night, as each body is searched, identified, given its last rites, and then cast into the flames. It is a bitter reminder that even though the kor'kron may be losing the war, they are still formidable opponents who will not go down lightly.

As if the initial battles weren't enough, Horde remnants continued to assault the Alliance forces several hours after formal victory was declared. Medical supply caravans were raided, and a lumber party was cancelled due to the danger. Though these attacks did little damage to Alliance troops, they greatly delayed construction work and search-and-rescue operations.

Searches for survivors continue throughout the night, and surprisingly both Alliance and Horde wounded are being taken to the infirmary and tended to. Those Horde survivors, once stabilized, are being placed inside recently-erected cages to await transfer to formal prisoner of war camps. They are provided food and water, and Alliance soldiers have been ordered to treat them with dignity and respect despite being enemies.

The Alliance's next target is Fort Triumph, though it is unclear how the outpost will be taken after the casualties sustained at Forward Command. The fort will need to be softened up by artillery and air support if any successful attack is to be made. However, it is likely the kor'kron have plans of their own. With the Alliance's position at Forward Command tenuous, there is a strong chance that the kor'kron will stage more raids and attacks before the week is done.

Map Updates:
1) Alliance takes Forward Command, but the area immediately surrounding is still strongly contested.
2) Dwarven steamtanks move south to Forward Command.
3) Rebel forces from Thunderbluff take Taurajo and begin march on Desolation Hold.
4) What few kor'kron forces were in Dustwallow have withdrawn to reinforce Desolation Hold and Fort Triumph, leaving the marsh to the Blood Wolves.

SUGGESTED DM EVENTS
So, there's at least a week until the next battle! What do you do now? Well, there's many things! Here's some suggestions.

  • Kor'kron attack! The kor'kron launch an attack on Forward Command, exploiting its weak defenses. Gather up everyone present and repel the invaders! Recommend heavy use of kor'kron siege weaponry--artillery and bombs--in order to show off the kind of battle you don't see in WPvP. Remember, even melee classes can participate in ranged defense by picking up rifles and crossbows from the armory or manning cannons and turrets! They'll just probably have lower chance of success compared to dedicated ranged characters.
  • Search-and-rescue operations. Go out on the field and try and find survivors. But what's this? You've found a Horde soldier, and he's still alive! Standing orders are to stabilize his wounds and return him to camp for treatment and detainment. But you're far away from camp, and this fellow was part of the army that attacked and bombed Theramore and killed hundreds of Alliance during the battle for Forward Command! No one has to know. What do you do? Tip for DMs: Give the wounded orc a personality opposite of the players--if the players are in favor of tending, make him a despicable and bloodthirsty fiend who spits on every offer of help! If the players are in favor of gutting, make him honorable or perhaps scared, someone who was just doing his duty or just wants to go home. Make it a difficult moral choice!
  • Resource operations. Forward Command is still repairing and getting set up. Chop down some wood from the dangerous Overgrowth or set up a caravan to either Northwatch or Honor's Stand and escort supplies back down to Forward Command. Tip for DMs: Spice it up with Horde/Overgrowth attacks, dropped cargo, broken axles/wheels, and so on. For extra oomph, have some of the attacks done by kor'kron dressed up in Rebel colors--[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]!
  • Prisoner of war transfers. Similar to above, set up a prisoner transfer and escort chained Horde up to Northwatch or Honor's Stand so they can be processed and sent to formal prisoner of war camps. Tip for DMs: Spice it up with Horde rescue attempts, Overgrowth attacks, talkative prisoners, and escape attempts.
  • Bombing runs! Get all the pilots together, mount up on gyrocoptors or gryphons, and head south to drop bombs on Fort Triumph or Desolation Hold! Tip for DMs: Make sure to emote and roll for the air defenses at the bases! Don't make these runs easy!
  • Interception! A group of Horde siege weapons and their escort are on their way north! Intercept them before they can reach Forward Command! Anti-tank mines, traps, bombing runs, do whatever you have to do to stop their approach!
  • Masses. The battle for Forward Command was bitter and bloody. Troop morale is low, and casualties are high. Sermons, funeral rites, masses, and counseling services are all highly needed!
  • Training. War is always around the corner, and soldiers need to stay in shape for it! Gather up people and run some training exercises. Jogs, war games, shooting practice, duels, swordsmanship, you name it!
  • "Hunting". There isn't much in the Barrens except for gazelles, lions, thunder lizards, and Horde. Sure, you could do the first three...
  • More work? Righto! Forward Command is still in the process of rebuilding. Help set up defenses! Towers need to be built, anti-air turrets setup, and patrols sent out. Be sure to spice it up, whatever you do.

(Thursday, July 25th)
Dwarven gryphon riders went scouting around the South Barrens to track enemy (and rebel) troop movements. While out, they managed to find an abandoned ale reserve near Bael Modan! They have brought it back to the camp, and delivered the kegs to the kitchen. Be quick, the reserves won't last long!

Meanwhile, there were several incidents of treachery and thievery at camp. One man, claiming to be from the 3rd Regiment, was found searching through crates. Though he was let lose, he was later found trying to steal strategic reports and maps from the admiral's tent! He was run down and chained, to be interrogated by Section Seven agents.

Additionally, a 1st Regiment member brought a blood elf death knight near the borders of the camp. Though this blood elf claimed to be rebel, the fact that she had no identifying colors and lacked any official documents lead to her being ordered to leave the camp. Despite the brandishing of weapons, there was (mostly) no bloodshed over the tense incident.

And yet another convoy was attacked! This convoy, carrying raw ore and gases from Stonetalon to Northwatch, was intercepted in the Overgrowth. The convoy never reached Northwatch, and none of the men have reported in. Someone needs to go and find out what happened.

Lastly, a couple of Freelancers and others from the camp went to investigate rumours of cursed ruins in the Overgrowth, finding something quite different than what they expected. Encountering a gnome warlock of the Frozen Covenant and his partner there, a fight soon erupted. The gnome got away, and the ruins look quite worse for wear.

Those looking to investigate the convoy attack, get in touch with me or Grim.

DoL, you guys should write up something for your initiate event, as I don't know what happened.

New stuff!

(Friday, July 26th. Morning)
Hysteria has engulfed the camp after a Freelancer discovered a cursed book filled with dark magic! The book, once its curse was activated, instantly began to tempt all those who looked upon it into wanting it for themselves. Even righteous Disciple paladins and the admiral herself were afflicted by its magic, and soon fights broke out all over camp, leading to a final showdown at the ruins south of Forward Command. Though direct hostilities have ended, the book has still yet to be located, and so its influence continues to linger on.

Some pretty hilarious RP this morning.

<The following letter arrives to Alliance Military Command in the Northern Barrens, presumably ending up in Areyah's mailbox.>

Honored commanders of the mighty Alliance,

It is with great sadness that I must inform you that a certain Alliance military group under contract with the Mudsprocket Committee of Infrastructure and Safety, henceforth known as the MCIS, has recently chosen to break their contract with us and compensation is demanded.

Without further ado, here is my summary of the events:

It was another evening on the roads outside Mudsprocket. I, alongside my two ogre guards, were watching over the road for threats coming from the marshes and for travellers to keep safe. Indeed, a colorful, armed group consisting of some draenei, worgen, humans and a gnome wearing Alliance tabards soon approached us on the road from the north. Considering the regretful destruction of Theramore and the ongoing campaign in the Barrens, I must presume that is the direction they have come from and thus you would be in charge of them.

But I digress. As per standard MCIS policies, I requested a road toll from them in exchange of safe passage. After some negotiations with their leader Alexia Thorne regarding the exact toll required of them, we settled on a contract that would require payment of ten silver per soldier, a mandate for the group to completely clear the quillboar fortress known as Razorfen from its inhabitants and permit us to scavenge anything of value in the location. They informed me Razorfen was their goal anyway, claiming the mysterious dark forces recently fallen upon the area originated there. The payment was given to me, and the Alliance army was most professional in that regard. Of that, I have no complaint. However, the group failed to clear Razorfen of the quillboar. It appears they defeated the source of the darkness indeed, but a large number of quillboar remain, thus preventing our scavenging efforts. In addition, the military group has left the area and does not show any intent of fulfilling their obligations. Neither have they returned to discuss the contract with us further.

This is an outrage indeed. I had always believed the Alliance military to hold a honorable code of conduct, the kind a honest goblin could trust to fulfill their contracts. Truly, my faith in the Alliance has been deeply shaken by this deplorable Alexia Thorne and her soldiers. But it is in our best interests not to allow this to escalate into a diplomatic crisis, thus I offer two possibilities for settling the matter. You may either provide us a sum of 100 (one hundred) gold, delivered to the MCIS office in Mudsprocket, or commit the full military might of the Alliance to lay waste to the remaining quillboar, thus permitting us to initiate our scavenging operations. In both cases, a written assurance that the Alliance can be trusted to honor their contracts in the future is required alongside a stern admonition to Alexia Thorne.

I look forward to settling this matter in a peaceful manner.
Yours sincerely,
Chairman Zipnegg Bulletspring
Mudsprocket Committee of Infrastructure and Safety

<Attached you will find a copy of the original contract. It requires a fee of 10 silver per person for passage, and has a clause demanding the military group to clear Razorfen of all threats and leave all of the quillboars' belongings there for the goblins to scavenge. Also, in small writing it has a clause that anything the military group should leave in Razorfen for whatever reason rightfully belongs to the goblins, as do all their belongings should they fall in the attempt. It is signed by an Alexia Thorne.>

Most thrifty Chairman Bulletspring,

The Alliance has no one named Alexia Thorne operating under our banner. Indeed, miss Thorne is at odds with the Alliance, and currently wanted for treason. Additionally, I did not order any Alliance troops to pass through Dustwallow Marsh, so I'm afraid that any troops you saw may have been wearing stolen tabards to fool you. Therefore, I cannot help you. I would recommend that you take up your claim against miss Thorne herself for any breaches of contract.
