[SW] Stormwind Aviation Club Empty [SW] Stormwind Aviation Club

Post by Melnerag Wed Mar 20, 2013 1:54 pm

Ever since flying was introduced in TBC I had a soft spot for the possibilities if offered, although I always made a clever excuse not to delve into them. So, occasional aerial battle aside, nothing much happened.

But...what the hell? Adventure, in SPA---Air! How can I keep saying 'No' to that?

Without further ado, I present:
TL:DR:

Stormwind Aviation Club

Former pilots and aviations enthusiasts come together with like-minded lads and lasses to tinker on their flying machines, fly around, have fun, take on some freelance jobs and have a time of their lives.

Freelance jobs? Yep. Anything from as innocent as delivering mail to Fort Livingstone (and being attacked by evil Troll bats), spotting school of fish in the sea outside Stormwind (and bumping into a pirate ship), dropping supplies into Darkshire to show the Black Hand that their blockade is worth shit to something as daring as taking air-snapshots [about that later] during w-PvP campaigns or just RP to actually air-raiding camps of innocent bad guys and bombing unsuspecting bandit lairs or even undertaking a crazy enterprise of hunting down and gunning a dragon, because, why not?

Whacky-ness and spontaneity are a nice bonus. If you keep tinkering a Death Ray to your machine only to have it blow you up mid-flight and crash-land in the jungle so that the rest has to rescue you, I will hug you for it!

Format of RP

1. Weekly event, preferably tied up to some IC job given to us by other players or alternatively something made up for fun.
2. Occasionally weekly event will be replaced by fun and games involving gyrocopters instead of *cough* serious *cough* job. Sometimes it might just happen sporadically on some other day.
3. Using the power of whispers to find other members of the club who are bored and eager to fly, and doing some flying.
4. Bumping into each other every so often to geek out over new upgrades.

Organization

This is not a guild and not an organization. It is a club. Even if you are Supreme Lord Führer of Kharanos and just want to fly once in a while, jump right in. The character I will do it on is Rihani, who is more of a businesswoman than an aviator. Her skills can be summed up with 'She can pilot a gyrocopter'. That means that you have a dream of becoming Red Leader, the position is open. /wink

So yes. No organization. Hang around, have fun. Look for solo-jobs if you want to, or opt-in for jobs Rihani found and cash in on the part of the payment.

You get a club membership card and pay a small fee (just because), and swear not to break the law while in the pilot seat, not to betray clients and be more or less honest. If you are caught taking the cargo and dumping it in a pond, you will be kicked out of the club! These are all the restrictions on your freedom. That also means that if you never do any freelance jobs and just fly around and have a good time, you can't ever be kicked unless you a gigantic jerk firing rockets at your mates.

Stormwind Aviation Club

To aviators:
Does the Blue call and is walking on the dusty, dirty earth just too mainstream? Whether you are a retired pilot or an aviation enthusiast, now you no longer have to fly alone!

While you are at it, why not do some good up there and get paid for it as well?

Stormwind Aviation Club offers you a company of like-minded individuals to watch your tail or cover your windscreen in soot (depending on who has the better machine), the club will also help you find freelance assignments to take solo or in group so that you can spend more time flying and less time negotiating business.

Contact Rihani Deephaven in High Dock Road 65a, Stormwind City to sign up for the club!

What you give:
-Membership fee of 5 silver a month
-Oath not to be a jerk (no, really) and not to screw over the clients (which incidentally also makes one a jerk)
-Part of payment for jobs goes to the club, rest is yours though!

What I give:
-Company of like-minded individuals
-Steady supply of jobs you may take
-Access and group-discount for some talented technicians, for when you are too drunk to repair your bird yourself
-Discount for hardware
-Discount on hangar space in the Docks.
-Some toys to play with on jobs, toys you would not normally be able to afford!
-Fabulous mortgage if you do not have own gyrocopter but wish to acquire one! Write to inquire after the details of the deal.

Club activities every Thursday starting on Thursday the 28th in-front of the dockside hangar.

To those seeking aviator services:

Here is the list of services the club provides right now:

Spotting
Do you have a fleet of fishing boats and don't want to waste time looking for fish? Are you curious whether there are pirates or horde waiting out at sea? How close to Stormwind is your competitor's caravan? Are there bandits in that treacherous mountain pass? Just ask, and we will do your air-reconnaissance for you.

Aerial Quickshot
Ever wondered what the world looks from above or want to see how the competitor-caravan is doing? We can take a low-quality quickshot during daytime! Quickshots tend to be darker and have low quality due to the short exposure time of the photosensitive plate, but the copter doesn't have to stop and steady to make it!

Aerial Slowshot
When taking a slowshot the pilot will stop the machine and hover in the air to focus the Snapshotter and allow for longer exposure. Slowshots can be taken during night and have far higher quality.

Rapid Delivery and Extraction
We can deliver your mail and supplies with extraordinary speed. Do you want to send fresh flowers from Stormwind fields to your darling in booty bay? No problem! Supplies and mail can be delivered in areas where landing is possible and paradropped where landing is impossible (accuracy to within half a mile of target guaranteed) We can also carry up to one additional passenger.

Air Support
Lacking the big guns for your brave adventuring expedition and not minding to empty your pockets on hiring us and paying hazard-pay? As long as the cause is legal, we will bring repeater guns, rockets and bombs into the fray!

Here you can see our operational range from Stormwind, we can move base to another location if the pay is right:
[SW] Stormwind Aviation Club Range10
All services are available within the Green circle, covering all of Elwynn and parts of Westfall, Duskwood, Burning Steppes, Searing Gorge, Dun Morogh and some Redridge Mountains.

Within the Red circle we offer limited services as we either have to carry additional phlogiston (and less cargo) or refuel at destination (such as Booty Bay or Ironforge).

Contact Rihani Deephaven at High Dock Road 65a, Stormwind City if you have questions or wish to hire an aviator.

Outfitting your bird for war

First thing you need is protection. Our brightest scientists were searching for the definitive answer to Aerial Rectal Perforation ('arrow in the butt' in pilot-speak) and have unanimously agreed on placing a thick cast iron frying pan under the pilot's seat.

Heavy armour for the torso, safety helmet and goggles increase survivability by 67% in cases of the pilot coming under fire while in the seat. Parachute, flare gun and a fire extinguisher are highly recommended. Quick study suggests that alcohol on board increases fatality by 1.3%.

Modern gyrocopters are as varied as the pilots who fly them, good thing they are still built around the old Mark II chassis and have enough similarities to make armament development a viable and profitable industry!

Mark II chassis was designed with light repeater gun in mind, to be placed at the nose of the machine underneath the frontal rotor. Science has made gigantic strides since then, and this slot for a single main armament is now fully customizable!

1) Light Repeater Cannon was designed to dispense a ray of metally death at 180 rounds per minute. Unfortunately nobody got it to do that without overheating and blowing up. L.R.Cs generally fire short bursts of roughly 9-15 rounds before needing a cooldown of several seconds. You can find a great variety of L.R.C schematics, some better than others. Make sure your schematic includes engine-synchronizer or you will end up shooting your own rotor blades to bits.

2) Heavy Repeater Cannon was designed when our scientists have concluded their metastudy of over two hundred AARs involving dragons. L.R.C rounds simply couldn't penetrate the thick scales! Answer: bigger gun. Heavy Repeater Cannon is a mechanical automatic weapon designed to dispense explosive shells at a steady rate of 6 rounds per minute. Warning: automated reloading mechanism can sometimes jam.

3) Flamethrower. When one of our colleagues suggested placing a short-range Dragon Gun in the main armament slot, we painted him green and then laughed at him. Little did we know that Science was on his side! Two weeks later his flamethrower-equipped machines burned down a field in Tirisfal growing magically enhanced crop of herbs to be used in plague research!

MII has two additional slots underneath the wings connecting the fuselage to the secondary jet-rotors. Most pilots prefer to equip them with turbo-phlogiston to increase the speed of their machine. Great customizability of MII allows you for greater freedom:

1) Two phlogiston tanks can be equipped to increase the range or speed of your machine. Most pilots go for the infamous turbo-phlogiston to be used as an afterburner, cooler heads choose simple phlogiston to increase the range of their machine.

2) Bombs. We are not goblins, but even we love a good explosion!

3) Rockets. Our engineers have designed a great variety of those, ranging from two high explosives to battery of 2x6 smaller rockets.

4) Cargo. When you can choose between bombs, rockets or turbo-phlogiston, why would you want to pack additional laundry instead? Fine, whatever. You can do that if you want to.

At the back of MKII, on either side of the engine, are twin cargo compartments. These can also be refitted to carry additional passenger or stuffed with bombs. Caution, positioning bombs this close to the engine is not a very good idea.

Also, just because it starts 28th doesn't mean we can't meet before that and start flying. Just sayin'.

Did some whacky playing around with the 'aerial photo' concept, this is work in progress on the style:

Quickshot: (short exposure, low quality, but captured moving objects well. Quickshots can't be taken during nighttime due to lack of light with short exposure)
[SW] Stormwind Aviation Club Quicks10

Slowshot: (longer exposure, higher quality, fast-moving objects are smudged. means that slowshots taken at night will have all objects that can move be awfully smudged, as it requires even longer exposure.)
[SW] Stormwind Aviation Club Slowsh10

As you can see, both provide fun challenges and can be made to be usable in RP without being "OP! Photos!"

Sounds awsome as some of you might know, Quinian is not only a writer, poet and doctor. He is also a pilot!

Oath not to be a jerk (no, really) and not to screw over the clients (which incidentally also makes one a jerk)
UGH!

I feel like you have failed to address one important issue: How much weight can a fully grown gyrocopter carry?

A fully grown gyrocopter can carry anything between N and B pounds where N is the number demanded by the plot and B is a number that makes people scream "BULLSHIT!" in unison.

Just a note about exposure; you can get a clear image at night if it is a clear night! Starlight and other sources etc.

I wish I could afford a Gyrocopter for this!

True, I am still tinkering with different ways of doing this. Balance and RP fun are more important than science. I noticed that any reasonable altitude makes people utterly unrecognizable. So don't worry about Eye in the Sky making a picture of you murdering your wie.
