Well not having a real grasp of "good and bad" due to being remotely trained by Yoda can do quite the bad stuff too!

On the bright side (For Mark Hamill atleast) it means he can get a movie role with actual screen time that isn't ruined by Luke Skywalker.

Y2J agrees with you.
For context, Y2J feels that despite him being World and WWE champion he is not getting the attention he deserves. The Rock is going to main stage a pay per view and not him. This is the only time anyone ever interrupted the "if you smell what the rock is cookin'" quote. Great acting from two of the very best.

Man I miss the old days of WRASSLIN! I used to love Raw on a Friday night, have a few friends round, get wasted and start yelling quotes at each other... Childhood was awesome!
But yes, not all new Star Wars stuff has to be bad, as a few have said Disney have Marvel and have done some good stuff with that so I'm tentatively hopeful. Also, here's a link to modern Star Wars done right!
Much better than episode 1, 2 and 3.

Also a great article for observations like this:The first time we see Luke in Return of the Jedi, he’s wearing all-black, just like his father did. He gives R2D2 and C-3P0 to Jabba the Hutt, much to their surprise. Luke isn’t exactly looking like a clean-cut Jedi like he claims. Then, when he finally enters Jabba’s palace, the musical cue sounds a bit like the Imperial March, and the way he enters with the light behind him makes it unclear if he is Luke or Vader. Then, he force chokes Jabba’s guards, something only Vader has done in the series! Nobody else sees him do this.
When he confronts Jabba, he warns him that he’s taking his friends back. He says Jabba can either profit from this, “or be destroyed.” Furthermore, he tells Jabba “not to underestimate my power.” The last time this phrase was used, it was by Anakin when dueling Obi-Wan. When watching Jedi on its own, Luke just seems a tad arrogant during these scenes. When watching Jedi immediately after watching Revenge of the Sith, the message is clear: Luke Skywalker is on the path to the Dark Side.
holy shit that's actually epic

Yes, that's got me thinking aswell. And come to think about it, he is rather attached to his friends and family, such things lead to the Dark Side.
Re: New Star Wars Trilogy!?!
He does temporarily become the pupil of a ressurected (read: Cloned) Palpatine in the Expanded Universe. For much the same reasons as Anakin.
But yeah, I always was puzzled by Luke's behavior when dealing with Jabba the Hutt. He doesn't really seem to honor the Jedi Code at all and pretty much goes where he pleases.
Also: I just read that huge blog post. That's a pretty nice read, actually.

Which was exactly the point of him acting as such.

I know it was, but in the original trilogy it's not clear why he would act like he does. He's given pretty much no incentive to go Dark Jedi on Jabba. He comes off as a bad, immature jedi who should still be learning, but doesn't at all portray the struggle he's supposed to be facing throughout the entire movie. As the Machete Order guy said, watching II and III between V and VI emphasizes this struggle and makes for an overall stronger experience when watching Return of the Jedi.

Re: New Star Wars Trilogy!?!
It should be noted that he was originally supposed to be fairly dark sided at the beginning of RotJ. There are cut scenes (which were released with the blueray edition I think?) that depicts it a lot clearer. It's intended that he doesn't truly become a Jedi until the end of the film.

To be honest, don't forget, Episodes 4/5/6 came out before Episode 1/2/3, the lore wasn't as extensive back then and most of the history in the universe was just legends. They mention the clone wars, and that Vader was a jedi once, but there is little actual solid lore on the ways of a Jedi knight. They speak of fear, anger, hate etc as the path to the dark side, nothing about personal attachments was really mentioned. Listen to what he's told by Obi-wan then Yoda in episodes 4-6, they teach of balance and understanding the force.

Plus that Yoda never got the chance to lexure him much on "what it means to be a Jedi, and what equals good/dark side actions".
As far as I can tell most of it was force training, and some soul-searching

He did give Jabba plenty of chances and was well outnumbered at his own execution with friends to rescue. I struggle to see how there could have been a peaceful resolution by that time. He did try to negotiate first, first with droids then personally.
And yeah he has not had the 20 years of training other Jedi would have had.

"Profit or be destroyed" is an ultimatum, and Obi-wan always told Anakin that ultimatums were really not something to toss around as a Jedi :p
Force choke etc. etc.
The line "Don't underestimate my power" has a lot more weight when you watched III because that was exactly what Anakin told Obi-wan. It goes from "Luke is cocky and arrogant, bit on the dark side of things" to "Luke is GOING DOWN THE PATH OF THE DARK SIDE JUST LIKE HIS FATHER OMG". The latter adding a lot more suspense to the movie.

Aye but I reckon Luke Skywalker stopped his decent to the dark side once he had cut off vaders hand. In his anger he bested his father, but refused to strike the wounded sith lord down, then threw his light saber aside, stating he would never turn to the dark side, To which he was tortured until Vader intervened.....Btw.....Best moment in star wars yo.

When creating the balance scenario that Anakin turned out to be (the whole chosen one), Luke was meant to represent the balance of dark and light and his struggle in both. It is why he wears black as well! I mean, his training wasn't exactly extensive like the younglings to Jedi in the prequels.
Harrison Ford has said he'd be up for playing Han again, despite him complaining a couple of years ago about how shit the character of Han was. Disney has not said anything, though, so hopefully they avoid bringing him back in a major way. A brief cameo and I'd be happy.

He just needs to be there enough for Chewie's EU death to happen and I'll be happy. Chewie's death in the EU was so dramatic and perfect for the character and I'd really enjoy seeing that on screen.
