Re: The vent thread
I can imagine people not liking both, tbh. I only enjoyed them because they were a lot of fun in comparison to shite by the Bronte sisters. I bet if you went into school and took a survey on people who actually enjoy Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights, it would be a minimal percentage of people who actually enjoy it. It doesn't really represent what is appealing about literature for a young teen.
And some poetry, bloody hell. I remember in school when they pulled out metaphors and disected them to a point that was just pure bullshit. I can't recall which poet, but I know one took an examination on his own poetry and only got a 'D'. Since then, I'm a lot less trusting of how in depth the meaning behind certain words are in a poem.

There should be lots of Shakespeare taught really. Hamlet is V interesting.
Tho at school I only recall studying Macbeth and Romeo/Juliet. Pity really, Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, Henry V, Othello are all worth a closer look.

Re: The vent thread
We did Titus Andronicus, which was boring as hell imo. Great Expectations was pretty good, but we only had time to read the first 5 chapters.
Meh well, had the first hour (closer to 45 minutes) of the comparison essay today. Wrote two full pages on one feeling. It was actually a hell of a lot easier than expected when I really got into it. Got another 3 hours to finish it.
I just can't read books. Took me 2 years to read Day of the Dragon on and off, and I can only read a few pages at a time. Felt like quite an achievement when I finished it.

I remember watching a lecture done by one of own writers, who told a story about some students asking her for help on their exam, which was on her book. In the end they called her back and said they had flunked. I also take that as an example of how silly it can sometimes get with the 'clever' people over-analyzing things.

Re: The vent thread
Yeah, you need to talk some shit in English lit. We studied Woman in Black and looked at how Susan Hill used the connotations of the name 'Arthur' to give the impression of a rational protagonist. I really don't think that even crossed her mind.
Re: The vent thread
I agree, but the way shakespeare is taught is really counter productive in a lot of cases. I only really appreciated it when I got to college.Lexgrad wrote:There should be lots of Shakespeare taught really. Hamlet is V interesting.

And yeah, Raen. She probably chose Arthur as she simply liked the name.

Re: The vent thread
On the English literature thing. I talk as outsider, who studied Italian literature(mother tongue) and then started to study English literature the 'English' way. I was utterly horrified. I really like English/American literature(not all, I have my list of authors) but the way it is taught, at least as it was to me, it's completely disappointing. Too many cages, too much reading between the lines, it's art, it's literature, not maths. You can't tell people how they should feel reading a poem, or teach what you think the author was thinking when he wrote this and that.
(Won't mention the fact the teacher hadn't the least glimpse of idea about who Walt Whitman was, that's for another post, when I'll actually need to whine)

I remember how many people were put off by the fact you're analysing books that, though extremely well written, are pretty fucking dull to a young person. I had to study Jane Eyre and I couldn't read past the first chapter at 16, I hated it. I ended up reading a synopsis and winging it on the exam date - came out with a high B, where as if it was a book I could get into, I would have aced it.Raenmar wrote:Compare the presenation of feeling in 'Great Expectations' and FUCK YOU
I'm so bad at English lit <_<
Withering Heights, Jane Eyre, Great Expectations yada yada yada. The only decent books I ever studied in English were 'Of Mice and Men', 'To Kill a Mockingbird', 'Animal Farm' and 'Othello' (only because I already knew the book due to doing a drama piece alongside it). If they threw in some Song of Ice and Fire or something just as popular, you'd have a lot more people wanting to get into English Lit and then you can save the crappier parts for college.
"Withering" Heights ... ?!?!?!?!
and speak for yourself I loved the books we were given to read at school thomas hardy is a literary god

I'd imagine a fair few RPers here would enjoy that style of writing because we're a group of writers... For your common young student, reading about depressed women getting turned on by depressed men was not my idea of a good read and I knew only one person who enjoyed it in school. The weird kid!

Dutch literature: fetishes, sex, psychosis, traumas, murder, etc.
Anything that would make it unsuitable for minors yet we read the pieces anyway.

That's REALLY annoying however, try http://jstore.org/ - without a Uni sign in you might not get 'everything' but hey, you might get something :-)

Re: The vent thread
hmm ok I will, thanks! the uni already recommended a million other websites (mainly been using pubmed cause everything else is annoying as hell and just feeds the slowly growing tumor this coursework is nursing away in my brain) but I'll give this jstore a shot! says my uni has access to it at least but we'll see!
