Comic books: Because women are sexual objects in these too! Empty Comic books: Because women are sexual objects in these too!

Post by Gesh Tue Jun 12, 2012 7:25 pm

Okay, so I was reading this.

And for me it sort of hit the nail on the head about how about the video game industry and the graphic novel industry still think it's perfectly cool to keep mutating the female form, creating unattainable images of perfection and planting women in ridiculous costumes/armour, that wouldn't be plausible! I mean look at Wonder Woman.. She stands for the rights of women and is suppose to be the power feminist! and what is she strolling around in?

A skin-tight american flag that shows off her amazing rack and perfect ass. Wow, ain't she a warrior of the people.
Spoiler:

And no, showing skin and a woman exploring her sensuality isn't a bad thing, but it's inappropriate for the character and obvious pandering.

Let's take for example, how she was redesigned a couple of months back.

Spoiler:

Now that's a bit more like it, reasonable, still feminine, and quite bad ass in it's own way!
Guess what happened? DC chickened out and slap her in another bathing suit,

Don't get me wrong, I completely understand the awesomeness of having a sexual character, a character who has it going on, that can use his/her charms to obtain what he/she wants and needs. That's great and everything, really awesome. Fun, fun. Whatever.

But what my mine gripe is about is how carbon copied most female characters are, their either sexy bitches or cutesy little damsels. Where the hell is the happy medium? or the completely off the scales, new girl on the block who blows out both those stereotypes? Is it just me or do writers just tend to be making predictable characters to pander on the male heroes? and all the artists seem to be doing is abusing anatomy.

And before you guys say, sex sells. Do you really wanna stick your sausage in this abomination?

Spoiler:

There is a difference between creating a sexually confident character and a character who insults what it means to be a woman.

A sexually confident character, inspires a sense of bad-arsey in the reader, just as much as viewing Batman bringing the beat down on a bunch of villains, they also do this whilst adding a pinch of flirtin' into the comic book itself, it isn't about making it a display! it's about adding in the human aspect of lust to make the character, more relateble, more believable.

Take a look at Anne Hathaway, portraying Cat woman. You see the difference?
Spoiler:

A sexualised character, is just about the tits and arse, that's it. Drawn obscurely, giving anatomy the middle-finger, pretty much just telling every female reader that if they don't look like that, they ain't getting any fun in the future, and reinforcing that old perfect-arse-perfect-boobs combo that people really need to realise, doesn't happen and isn't something we as a society should aim for.

LOVE WHAT'CHOO MOMMA GAVE YOU.

Excuse the rant.

I made a similar comment on this forum around the time the Avengers was released, though in much less condensed form of course.

They aren't anywhere because most comics are written by males and aimed at (teenage/young adult) males.

They create them that way because thats pretty much the only way you'd get (teenage/young adult) males interested in a female superhero. It's how they sell their female superheros, so nothing in the industry will change, its too set in it's ways.

Yeah it damn well did, deal with it. And it isn't heroism, it's common sense.

and really Corleth? did you know Bat woman revamped sold a hell a lot of comics, and got DC lotsa, lotsa money?

And her costumes pretty flattering, in the right way.

Spoiler:

Comics are more then about porn, I speak to you as a gay man, and a comic book reader. I don't read for the sexualised characters, male or female, it's about the story!

If you wanted sexy, you can use google. You don't go out and buy a comic book!

idk, I cant see women being into a not beautiful super hero. They are super heroes and we see them as heroes as they are better than us. Superman is ripped because a weedy superman wouldnt work. The punisher, judgedread... Even Spiderman went from nurd to athletic.

Same is true of Women superheroes, they need to be better than the reader, hotter, curvier, ect ect.

Only Super fems I can think of who are not are fetishes.

All of the pics you posted are equally 'bad', going by your rant. None of them is better than the other. Just because less skin is shown, doesn't make it any more realistic or unsexualized.

Compare both designs of Wonder Woman that you show: Large hips, and a huge rack. This is present in both designs. In fact, the first design (with more skin) is quite possibly less sexualized, due to the muscle definition. The second design loses that and replaces it with a literally stock standard female body.

With the catwoman image (which I'm not sure if you're trying to say is good or bad), we have thigh high heels (completely impractical for combat), skin tight leotard, and cutesy cat ears.

Also, comics do this for both sexes, too. It's not just a case with females. The men also rock leotards and are well-built and attractive. The only difference is there's more variety in body types... somewhat. 90% are still hyper-masculinized. It affects both sides.

You want to see a good female comic book hero outfit?

Spoiler:

Jubilee. Rocking the fat shades and yellow trench, like she's Doc from Back to the Future 2

Sexy isn't beautiful, and what a man considers sexy isn't always what a woman considers sexy. For that matter, what you find sexy, doesn't mean other people do.

Dru if you honestly believe those ridiculously large boobs are appropriate for a woman of her muscle definition you have no concept of the female form. I'm not saying they shouldn't look like super-models, I just feel like the anatomy is being abused for all the wrong reasons, fair enough to stylize a character, but it isn't appropriate for the character for her to be strolling around in that costume. Can you imagine wearing that? How revealing it would be? It just doesn't suit for the warrior, wonder woman is.

What the hell.
The male characters are built ridiculously large, yeah. But they aren't drawn for the intention of being sexy.

You just have to take two glances at the current state of comic books and you'll notice how women are drawn inappropiately, feeding this dillusion of the perfect curvious and thin at the same time body.

Whilst men are built like beasts.
Why can't a female character, doing exactly the same role as her counter-model be just as ripped? hench and monstrous?

I'm not trying to condemn comic books here, I love 'em. I hope you guys realise that. It just grinds my gears how acceptable it is to one, abuse the human anatomy whilst completely ignore the variety of the female body and two character designs with impractical costumes and armour. Don't get me started on the plate belly-showing business.

Also if the male super heroes were being sexualised.. they would have bubble-butts, soft lips and smooth backs. Just sayin'.

Which is quite often sexy. I dare say I was attracted to more male X-men characters than females... and that was before I learned I was trans.

Again, in both cases, they're hyper-idealized. Both encourage a perfect body standard that for most people is completely impossible to live up to.

First of all, I'll admit the first one is a little perfect. Her boobs could be smaller for her frame.

The second picture is Anne Hathaway, she's an actress. An actress acting as Cat woman, which I explained is a very sexual character, that isn't a bad thing. I never said that, she uses her womanly wilds to charm her opponents, her flashing her ass, in heels isn't to be un-expected, it's part of the character. The character has become a symbol of female empowerment, your body doesn't have to be your enemy.

And what exactly is wrong with Bat woman? She's in a full suit, cape and a rather large mask, not much different from the batman, sept it's put on a female body, I'm not saying we completely remove boobs and ass here. I'm saying we need to be more aware about how ridiculous some characters are being made. It's encouraging the wrong kind of message.

Sexual confidence is a gift! sexual violation ain't something we should be parading.

'Could be'. Not to mention skintight leotard with large hips, and a corset. And this is the least sexualized of the three.

It's a skin tight leotard with thigh high heels. It's sexualized. It's the kind of stuff BDSM people wear. You say 'it's part of the character'. Yeah, it's part of the character. It's part of a hyper-sexualized character.

And what exactly is wrong with Bat woman? She's in a full suit, cape and a rather large mask, not much different from the batman, sept it's put on a female body, I'm not saying we completely remove boobs and ass here. Her nipples (from her large, perky breasts) are poking through her skin tight leotard.

Any skin-tight outfit, when put on an obviously attractive body, is very sexualized. It's making the character naked without actually having them naked (especially prevalent in the Batwoman one).

Also, by saying 'not much different from batman', is acting like Batman is a better model. No, it's the same case with him. He has an attractive, toned body, which is shown quite clearly with his skintight leotard.

I don't have a problem with sexualized characters, it's expected of comic book heroes. What I don't like is you being hypocritical by calling some sexualized and some not, when they're all sexualized.

Bat man isn't sexualised, there is a difference between sexualised and morphed, he's morphed into an obscure ideal of what the perfect soldier should look like, take the human male model in WOW, it just doesn't fit.

And Super man happens to wear a skin tight costume, it isn't about showing off his figure, not sexually at least. it's just what super heroes wear.

Artists need to be more aware about this sort of things, as do video game designers, it's just ridiculous : P.
