It's worth it.

Somewhat steep learning curve in all the Paradox games. I'd rank Victoria 2 the hardest of them.

I'd recommend EU3 first though. Alot easier to learn and many similiar mechanics carry over to Rome/Sengoku/Victoria/Crusader Kings what not.

In the Eurozone the prices range between €10,- (excluding VAT) to €30,- (including VAT).

I wouldn't know what it costs for you, but, media being outragiously cheap in the UK, my guess would be £5,- at PLAY if you're lucky.

I've recently started a game as the Netherlands, but I don't know what minor or greater goals I should go for...
Also, I've reclaimed Belgium and have taken the Azores from Portugal.

Any ideas?

I recommend the POP Demand mod for everyone though, makes the game about 150% better.

I've installed the POP Demand mod today. Fudge. It's marvelous! You were absolute right, it makes the game so much better!

June 7th 1840. It has been four years since the game started. I play as the United States, because they're my favorite country, the United Kingdom defaulted on their debt anywhere between a few months ago and a year ago. I checked in 1838 on their debt because I saw them borrowing quite a bit. At that point they had a total debt of 15535784.0, were losing 16k a day and were paying 9k in interest a day. They were also at war with Russia and China, hence their need to borrow money.

On June 7th 1840 I noticed they had defaulted on their debt, on that day they owed the United States alone 1210686.1 ....Suffice to say they're no longer #1 but #3/4

PDM has some great things that you can't get in the vanilla Vicky 2 such as the Taiping Rebelion in China.

Was playing on Germany and when the rebelion broke I first attacked the weakened Qing and forced them to a unfair peace gaining a Weihaiwei as port and then helped them defeat the pesty taiping rebels and then gained Shanghai as a port. A steady establishment for my future Ost-Asien Company.

Also eagerly waiting for House Divived expansion which adds plenty of new things to the game (such as foreign investments) and what not.

September 4th 1857 - Japan

What a glorious day it is! A few years ago, through extensive social and economical development, the great nation of Japan became civilised. Within mere months, it had become the seventh global power, with industrial metropolises appearing all across the once-peaceful valleys.
Only months later, following the invasion of Sino and Korea, and the later claiming of Korea, the Japanese empire ranked fourth on the scale of power. Now on its way to become not only a cultural and industrial inspiration, but also a military power.

Careful steps are being taken as a new era dawns upon the Empire of Nippon. Will they exchange their traditions for the western ideals of progression, or will they remain isolated within their island's boundaries? The Emperor knows all.

Edit: And, the download finaly worked. Great game, really.

Going to Dai Nam / Johore is always a good idea. Johore has plenty of precious metals which takes away all troubles of money. China can be a beast to tackle and you should not try it before Meiji Restoration really, then you can try power tech military stuff and with some trickery take the chinese armies head on in Korea.

Best way to deal with China as Japan is to lure them in to Korea, then cut off their troops in there, destroy them and repeat while keeping a constant naval blockade, Actual land invasion is really really hard.

So.. 1871.. How goes life in my United States?

The United States is quickly closing in on becoming the greatest industrial power the world knows. Only Britain, at the moment, is looked upon with more envy. It is the third Republican administration the United States has ever had. A rapid program of militarization is under way, especially in the navy, to protect the United States' interests across the world as they begin to expand beyond the Americas. Of note are intentions to have 200 (modern) combat ships in the Atlantic and 100 (modern) combat ships in the Pacific.

Three years ago Egypt was added into the American Sphere of Influence followed quickly by a deployment of the United States Marine Corps (I like to add a little bit of realism) to the country because a rebellion had gotten it out of my sphere. The war was hard-fought on the side of the marines (27k) until reinforcements in the form of the Army of the South (48k) arrived. It got to the point that my precious marine corps nearly got obliterated, I completely underestimated Egyptian opposition. Nowadays, while I wait for the Suez to be built, I'm keeping 45k marines in country to ensure loyalty and make sure that should Egypt be attacked by the Ottomans there are some troops capable of holding the line until reinforcements arrive from America proper.

In Asia Japan has westernized and became a Great Power. This I found quite useful as they had been in my sphere and were thus allied with me. Unfortunately about a year ago the Russians attacked, I quickly made a white peace with them because my armies are not capable of beating what the Russians can throw at me. It did alert me to the threat of the Russians and I'm intending to deploy 50k troops to Japan/Korea in the short term (after their war is over) so that I'm at least anchored in the region and can help negate any initial aggression.

Now Europe is interesting. Austria is being completely eaten up. Ever since Hungary got free it's gone downhill with them. They've lost territory to the Prussians (now the NGF), to the French (Croatia), to the British (Istria), to the Russians (something in the east), to Sardinia-Piedmont (Lombardia). They're just falling apart. It's interesting to see and I'm still contemplating as to how I'm going to approach Europe in the future (I have my eyes set on Spanish colonial holdings but that might prove a rather large war as of yet. They're in the French sphere and allied with the Russians)

So yaaaa, enjoying the game Very Happy

I am quite frightened by your ability to do this, good sir. Then again, I tend to play relatively timid. Not really expansionist at all. Mayhaps only with establishing bases of operations in regions to support my SOI.. But apart from that.. No. I doubt I could take over the world as an African country though. Still looking for the best tech route for the American economy >.>
