Howard Webb did three basic mistakes in tonights match, the mistakes being fouls that were not punished correctly. (Coming from myself, being a ref)

1. Red card to the dutch for a foul from behind without taking into account the health of the player (Van Bronkhorst I think did it? In the first half)

2. Red card to the dutch for dangerous play jeopardizing the health of the player. (Nigel de Jong)

3. 2nd yellow card leading to a red card for Robben when he chooses to continue play after Howard Webb has called for an offisde.

So, in resumé the dutch can only thank themselves that they lost, they played like crap and had jack off nothing to show, or even to do in that final. (Coming from one that was cheering for them even!)

The right team won this time. Iniesta was close to flawless this game, fought until the end. Robben had two free opportunities with the goalie and was hardly even touched, then nagged his way to a yellow, and should've gotten a second yellow at another great show of poor sportsmanship. This WC's bitch, without a doubt.

The biggest failure remains to be FIFA, though. -10 SECONDS- is how long it'd take a ref to wait to make a call, then get phoned in into his headset from a dude who was watching what happened from 4 angles in slow motion, and then make the call based on the camera dude's judgment. Ultra conservatist FIFA is what's keeping enjoyment from World Cup atm. The majority of viewers aren't very partial about who wins, so they get more enjoyment out of making sure the winning team won fair and square, and not that opportunities or bookings were taken away due to a bad call from a ref.

Edit: Can say that Bennedict is correct on #2 and #3 (didn't see #1 myself so can't comment), but Iniesta should also have gotten at least yellow when tackling that dude just out of anger, when the ball wasn't in play near him.

You guys got to realise that the importance of the game and the poor quality of the Dutch side that forced most of the ref's decisions. Its the World Cup final, the most important game occuring every four years and is supposed to have that epic feeling that its reputation gives it. Now the Dutch were atrocious in many of their actions, however the referee was being extremely lenient this match with his decisions because the Dutch should have ended the match with about 7 men. Now I dont know about you but 11 vs 7 doesn't sound very epic to me or fitting to a world cup final, and would have granted spain an inevitable victory. At least the ref, by not sending off those players, kept an air of competitiveness in the game.

I've been involved with cancer too much to not say it hurts when it's used as an insult.

But yeah, I'm glad Spain won. They deserved to win and guess what? PAUL THE OCTOPUS GUESSED IT RIGHT.

This was pretty much the underlying theme throughout ever single foul that the dutch made, Howard Webb did very good considering what kind of challenge this was, he could easily have ended the dutch within the first half.

My mom had skin cancer, both my grandparents had it, grandma died of it. Not bothered by the word a bit. Hypocrisy ftw.

It's just disgusting that it's somewhat regular for Dutch to use it as an insult, almost as bad as Americans using rape as an insult.

It's cultural differences, but it's just somewhat hurtful.

Yes, he could. But he tried to make the match play, even if the Dutch couldn't.

And, yes Jakins, "cancer" as an insult isn't just banal and trite, it's shit.

At the end of the day it was a fucking football match. I am the least jingoistic person, and I couldn't care less where "my team" ended up (home, quite rightly, and probably luckily not earlier). But the whole WC wasn't very good, the final was similar, not great football, at all. But the end result was in my eyes, the right one.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me. Or however that goes, I'm amazed if I got it right.

The only thing arguably that the ref did wrong was that he could've gone out with the yellow cards even earlier in the game, so to set the tone and calm the players down a bit. But really, even if it means killing the game or not, reds should've been handed out at the aformentioned situations. Some things you shouldn't get away with. :/

Deserved loss or not. The referee was bad. He didn't saw a corner and the off-side at the end. The one who scored wasn't off-side but the other player seconds before who passed it to him was.

And he didn't had the mact under controll in my opinion. I have to admit Dutch side made some nasty fouls which made me feel ashamed.

Better luck next time I guess...

Ps. I don't understand why some people need to curse and use diseases to express their opinions...seriously there are better more mature ways to do so... bounce

Ok? It got blocked. Standing in offside was never an offense, only when you get involved in the play.

So the referee did no mistake there.
