Re: Super Smash Brothers
I've got Project M to work.
Though a Smash game can only be properly judged in multiplayer, I must say that I am not dissapointed from what I've experienced from mocking about a bit on my own. It was a bizarre experience to play a game with Shiek as she handled in melee, looking like she does in Brawl, on a stage from the original smash on the N64. (Hyrule Castle)
The strength in this project isn't in its restoring certain characters to their melee physics, though, any schmoe can do that. The real treat is in how Brawl characters get changed to fit a melee-style game. Characters that previously were a complete bore to play are suddenly a ton of fun. I was tantilized by Sonic's speedy pinball gameplay which worked much better in Project M than it ever did in Brawl. Charizard and Lucario are also chewing up the scenery, even though I really despise the latter thematically.
The biggest treat for me personally though has to be what they did with Ness; rather than to restore him to his Melee roots, they seemed to have restored him to his N64 roots! The Yo-Yo has regained its old fiercesomeness. It comes out fast and hits hard, especially in his upsmash.
They've also changed a ton of moves from traditional Melee and Brawl that just didn't...well, work. Peach's Ham-cha buttslam got hefty buffs, DK got a new dash attack, Bowser's down B is cancellable in mid-air, etc etc.
I can't wait to try this out with some friends and see what it is properly worth.

I wouldn't count on that exactly! It's not a complete brainless conversion to Melee: they've really gone out of their way to attempt to balance things, and because they are an active modding community very much in tune with the tip-top tournament scene, they are sure to keep tweaking the balance as close to perfection as possible. If your friend shreds with Marth, it should be because he's the better player, but ideally there should be ways in Project M to counter it. Keep in mind that Marth is significantly worse on stages that have lots of platforms. He's got an edge on Final Destination, but he's not nearly as dangeous on, say, Battlefield. The strength of a character is also heavily determined by the strength of other characters, and seeing as they've done their best to make all characters viable, Marth may not be as supreme a character as he was in Melee!

Hahahah, my problem in Melee was playing Link vs his Marth. He was better than I was and also had Marth's obtimal timing fantastic. Which ment that I had to have a stellar engagement anytime I moved into sword range having to be closers.
*mutters about fucking tips of the sword*
I could still bomb him to shreds!

You're going to have to engage him eventually, you can't KO somebody with bombs. Not before he manages to get some hits in, anyway. Remember that if you're zen enough, you can actually catch those bombs, and there's always shields and dodges. One tiny hole in your wall of explosions is enough for a fast character like Marth to slip trough.

Don't even need to catch them. Hit them with the sword in midair! Though I forget if this just explodes them or reflects them back. Been years since I played.

Re: Super Smash Brothers
He was far to good at just dodging the strong arrows. Or zooming in to hit me when I took the time with one.
Btw Thelos. How did you get Project M to work? Since the no PAL version according to the website.
Edit: ANd it's not like he steamrolled me or anything. But he had played far more than me (his game) and was a bit better. But we were still fairly even. He was just the better one due to more exposure to the game and time to practise timings.

I have a NTSC (American) copy of Brawl, that's how.

Re: Super Smash Brothers
Having now played Project:M with some friends (Including erwtenpeller/Delidah) for a good hour or two, I feel I can now safely conclude that it has at least the potential to become the definitive smash experience. Allegedly, Link feels "like the best of both worlds, N64 and Melee", and I can attest that it feels the same for Ness.
I'm looking forward to diving into this game proper in the coming weeks and months.

Wierd, when I searched for it, I could have sworn it looked locked. I must have been mistaken, or, you know crazy.
If the mods so desire, this thread can be merged into it, then.
In case you were still wondering, thread reset from too many posts.
