Re: The "other game thread"
Helm, the biggest problem most people had with FF13 was that the first 30 or so hours of it was just "Run down along the narrow corridors with no choise of a path!"
Which is... the opposite of what everyone expects when picking up an FF title, and what few want from an RPG in the first place.
I liked the story, but after doing some mistakes at the early CD 3 made me suck... So now I'm watching a let's play for the ending and the rest of the game.
For most parts FF13 was a good game. It was just far to bloody tedious for most people to play close to thirty hours with not any freeroming at fucking all.
Edit: And when on the subject of games, this looks so tasty: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiU57B1dfss
Do want.

Re: The "other game thread"
FF13 did have a "linearity" issue but the way I see it the linearity was just more obvious in FF13. I have played and played through to the end but when it all comes down to it some of the previous FF titles had it too. Final Fantasy Seven for example, I know this sounds crazy but stick with me. Sure there was an open world map to explore to go and do off-plot things such as chocobo/golden saucer etc but for the most part if you were following the story of the game that was for the most part linearity as that story had only one direction. Sure for most people didn't see that as linearity but it just wasn't obvious to notice, where sadly FF13 had the misfortune of being too damn obvious in its linearity.
Glad they fixed it for FF13-2 and will be picking it up in the near future, I do hear it's picked up on the mistakes of 13 and sure I will enjoy it. My only complaint is all the DLC the game will get as I have an xbox without xbox live.
Nice to see the game has multiple endings too but the idea of time travel always irked me as it's such a hard topic to make "feel right". So let's hope they nailed that one.

- Spoiler:
- I've seen the opening to the game where you get to play a Valkyre Demi-Goddess mode Lightning in the end of times Valhalla, she's more of a cameo and story element than a main protagnist this time around but uh... I'm not sure on how I see it that she was a Soldier turned Fal'cie slave, to a defier of false gods then to a mistake in the timeline to become the servant of a goddess and becoming something supernatural. It screams typical JRPG to me but heh, I am sure I will still enjoy it anyway. Whats wrong with using her real name, Claire anyway? D:

Original Playstation one? I have that, that game is so amazing but gets so easy once you have Cid. Or easier.
Though got to hand it atleast, the cell shaded cinematics were decent in the lion war version:

Cid was far to overpowered indeed, it was like fighting with a demigod on your side... i managed to run into a weird sort of encounter where there were like fifteen monks... doesn't matter had cid.

Re: The "other game thread"
FF XIII was so... boring, for the first 25 hours or so. You had no freedom to explore, every area was a straight forward "Run down this path and kill some beasties."
But alas, I'm a Final Fantasy fan... The 2nd part is incoming as I replay the first part. The new additions to the game look fabulous, and I can't wait to get a little more freedom with my exploration again.

I've never really... "got into" japanese games as a whole, let alone J-RPG's. There's something about the way they model characters and the whole "everyone looks a bit asian but is supposed to be western" in some of the chars... I dunno. And I really dont like how combat works in the RPGs.

Haven't noticed that. The artwork is so unique, and as the games have progressed, characters have become so much more detailed and more... 'human' if you will, and less manga-like. Final Fantasy XIII is a great example of how different they all are. You have the that blockhead Snow, built like a battle tank. Then you've got little Hope, a young boy, and you can see it in his dress sense. They don't look at all Asian to me.
Besides. Sazh has a fucking afro. With a baby Chocobo in it. /win.

Re: The "other game thread"
Yeah like I said in my previous post I also agree FFXIII was a bad Final Fantasy game but in my honest opinion, disregarding all the flaming it got which I think went over the top, it was a pretty decent rpg. The story kept me going. I felt the linearity of the game made the story more prominent and focussed. You where -always- pushing the plot forward and it was an amazing and imaginative one at that.
They took a risk and it backfired in the eyes of die-hard FF fans but I know some FF newbies but rpg lovers and they thought it was a decent game. It gave us that awesome battle-system (Barr the auto battle WHICH IS STILL IN XIII-2!!!).
Ahh.. auto battle.. why.. WHY!?
Atleast now you can go into the options and make it so your cursor starts on the abilities menu by default at the start of a battle but if you have a haste buff or execute a preemptive strike ad have a full ATB guage.. you'd be dumb not to use auto battle to que up a stack of abilities quicker, which annoys me. There are two modes to the game now, normal and easy. On normal mode they should have taken auto-battle out of the game and tuned it around that, easy should be where you spam auto-battle and faceroll to the end of the game.

Same. Rest assured the character's in this one are -very- japanese. Serah, Noel and Lightning. I miss Sazh and Snow! Though I suspect Snow will turn up sometime.

I'll miss Fang.
Where there's Serah, there's Snow drooling in the background declaring his undying love. And Lightning wanting to punch him.

I make a habit not to spoil new games for myself by reading up on them and watching videos! But I'll be disappointed if Snow and Serah ain't got married yet... I blame the pair of them for the events of the first game!

Re: The "other game thread"
Tbh Helm, outbattle was already there. You could set it so you only had to control say one character back in FF7 I think. It just wasn't that open but you actually had to look for it in the controle menues.
And yes, all FF games are linere to a point. It's just that an illusion of freedom makes you far more happy to just not care about the freedom and keep going, than a straight on railway. Which will almost always make you want to fight against it.
FF13 is first "Corridor with NOTHING!" then "open world that makes you lose track of what you're doing" instead of a good ballance.
I've had this discussion a lot with a friend who stopped playing at early disc 2 I think because he found it all to tedious.

Re: The "other game thread"
Yeah thats the thing, linearity is in all FF's to some level. FF13's was just more blatantly obvious.
And I don't mind autobattle because if you did the gran pulse quests you'd learn that the fights resorted to actively using paradigm shift back and forth the more the bosses got tougher.

Most of the start of the game involved Snow screaming YOUR HERO IS COMING SERAH! And they all became L'cie, minus Vanille and Fang obviously, by following Snow and Lightning to rescue Serah.
Loud-mouth Snow+Damsel-in-Distress Serah = You're all pretty fucked now.

He irritated the fuck out of me until he discovered he was male.
Now he's one of my favourites. Fang, Lightning and Hope made up my main party whenever I could have the three together.

Re: The "other game thread"
For myself the part consisted of Fang as commando, being the best commando to have afterall. Lightning as ravager as thats the best ravager and then I used vanille instead of hope, hope had too little HP for my taste and Vanille is pretty useful once you get her synergist tree up.

I'm actually thinking about restarting FF 13 from the start. Since one reason I stopped playing was that I took a brake, and when I came back I was "okay... wtf is going on?"

Just did so myself! Finished the game the first time round, and I always like to play a game again when a sequel emerges. Just hit the Vile Peaks.
I occasionally switch to Vanille in place of Hope myself, but only if I need a very strict set of Paradigms for a difficult mark on Gran Pulse, seeing as they all excel in different areas. I found Hope to be one of the best Ravagers in the game along with Lightning, he had a solid Medic set too. Vanille was a superb Medic as well, but her Saboteur was amazing. Fang was my Commando too. For the luls, I sometimes took Snow along purely for the ridiculous amount of HP he had with his Sentinel role. xD Apart from that, I found him useless.
