[A] The Gilneas Platoon, full introduction (Inactive)
The Gilneas Platoon
Reinforcements have arrived.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The General of Gilneas' military is aware of Stormwind's recent turmoil. In all his wisdom he has decided to mobilise a Platoon to help out the Capital for at least half a year.
At this point, the unit's main objective is to offer assistance to the guard forces of Stormwind. New orders include introducing proper discipline into the ranks of the Platoon, especially for those with little prior military experience.
Relations with the local organisations are progressing, including bonds with the Council. In addition, guard rights have been granted, rendering the requirement for locals to be present in our patrols obsolete. These are two reasons why the Platoon is to put more focus on cooperation with other guards, which includes drills and longer missions away from home.
The Vanguard orders are hereby withdrawn, as the situation in Draenor appears to be more or less under control. Rather, you should focus on reinforcing the sister organisations of the Platoon: Gilneas' other military branches. Start preparing to split off sections who will be stationed at other locations. Gilneas' homebound military forces could use some extra men, as well as our other bases across the Kingdoms.

- Guild concept and mission:
Who are you and who is this General?
The guild consist of the members of the Stormwind branch of the Gilneas Military. This branch is better known as the "Gilneas Platoon" amongst the people of Stormwind themselves. The above text in bold are orders from the General, who for obvious reasons is not a player himself. His 'orders' are mostly designed to give us new and fresh purposes, for example when there are too few challenges. Yet on the other hand, when the Platooners and allies find themselves ICly at a loss of how to deal with a given situation, perhaps written objectives from this superior could offer guidance.
What is the story so far?
The guild's two Captains (GMs) keep a log to update each other on the daily happenings. This Captain's Log is a separate IC thread on this forum and can be found here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Do you also accept non-Gilneans?
Yes.
You could see the Platoon as divided in two halves: those who were ICly there from the start when the unit was assembled, and those who enlisted after its arrival in Stormwind. The first half would most likely be Humans and Worgens who were already serving in the Gilneas military, and volunteered or were assigned to this unit.
However, the second half of the guild could consist of anyone in Stormwind with a desire to join the initiative. We see three reasons to keep the guild open for non-Gilneans:- Lore-wise it would make sense not to be too picky in who to enlist. After all it is a time of war, and the army needs every able body it can get.
- Currently, almost all existing local guard guilds have race restrictions. We would like to offer a home for that rare Draenei healer who was denied for her hooves, awwhh...
- We would like to keep the OOC relations with these other guilds harmonic. It could be considered fishing from their pool if we make our requirements too similar to theirs.
- Lore-wise it would make sense not to be too picky in who to enlist. After all it is a time of war, and the army needs every able body it can get.
- Activities and events:
Do you have much spontaneous roleplay?
Yep! The setup of the Platoon lends itself for a lot of interaction with others, both in terms of cross-guild RP and 'random street RP', i.e. hanging out at the Pig & Whistle. These events and happenings mostly seem to develop by themselves and require little to no planning. We find ourselves amidst strife far more complicated than we expected. Tensions in the city are heightened by the continued absence of proper authorities. A first murder has been committed, and political intrigues are the word of the day. Naturally we're enjoying all this immensely on an OOC level; it seems to be played out quite realistically and the developing storylines have us on the edge of our seats.
Update on January 9th: Now that our comrades the local guard guilds are gaining in strength, we feel more confident in our mission to keep Stormwind safe. We can even afford to station some people in other locations, and organise little trips that can last a few days. Popular locations include Westbrook, Duskwood, Gilneas and Northrend. New RP locations can of course be suggested and if there is enthousiasm, you may go either spontaneously or at a date in the future. We do aim to have at least a small percentage of our people IC and at our homebase in Stormwind, because that is after all our current purpose.
How about scheduled events such as DM-ed missions?
These take a little more preparation, yet we quite enjoy them and usually they happen weekly. We like to welcome other guilds and unaffiliated roleplayers into these events as well, when possible. The Platoon differs from a few established guilds in allowing all IC members to come up with guild events, as opposed to officers only.
We do ask that those inexperienced with DM-ing ask for some guidance, to keep the experience smooth for all participants. Do your talents lie in either storytelling or managing groups of people, but not both? No problem! You can twin with someone who can do the other part with you, and co-DM a great event together.
Regular events
For most, the event that springs to mind right away is probably the weekly council meeting on Tuesday. Our first meeting will be an excellent opportunity to formally introduce the Platoon. From there on, we would like to attend along with the other guards, but since we're foreign we do not seek to be represented in the official city council. We are attending these meetings and have even received an offer to take a place amongst the council members, which has been accepted.
Update on January 9th: Besides the council event, the local guard guilds usually hold regular scheduled or spontaneous drills and trainings throughout the week, and we enjoy participating in these. We have started organising these by ourselves as well, and any local guards are of course welcome to join and will be notified.
- Organisation and ranks:
Bases of operation
If anyone asks: the Platoon has set up camp just outside the city, on a high bluff overlooking the Mage's Quarter. This location is real, but you can not get there by foot, which makes it a less than ideal place to actually roleplay. More importantly, most Stormwindians have little reason to visit our camp, and if we wanted to roleplay with our own guild only we could have stayed in Gilneas.
Update on January 9th: The Platoon has been given a trial period to earn guard rights, as judged by Stormwind's Minister of Defence. Last Tuesday the trial period ended and the guard rights have been awarded. This means the Platoon can now patrol on their own, and perform arrests without requiring a local guard being present.
Therefore we've made an inexhaustive list of a few locations where we actively roleplay. Here is where you might find us:- The War Room of the Castle Keep (to the right of the throne),
- The headquarters of local guard guilds,
- As for taverns, the Pig and Whistle seems to be most popular,
- Along the canals for some good old street RP,
- At Westbrook in southwestern Elwynn Forest,
- In Gilneas at various places including Keel Harbour and Tempest's Reach,
- On other temporary locations such as when we stayed in Darkshire.
If you can't find us, a quick "/who Gilneas Platoon" will help you find the location of the guild members; alternatively you could whisper one of them about what's going on.
Do I have to wear a uniform?
Update on January 9th: Yes, while you are on-duty you are expected to wear your uniform. Our current uniform options are the following. To try it on, click the link and then select your race and gender in the drop-down menus.- Cloth uniform with robes: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
- Cloth uniform with pants: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
- Leather uniform: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
- Mail users: please pick either Leather or Plate. We chose a leather set that looks pretty sturdy.
- Plate uniform: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
- Cadet uniform: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] (please continue reading for explanation).
The three main uniforms consist of quest reward pieces. Of course if you have already completed these quests, there is a chance you have vendored the pieces or picked alternatives. In this case we will help you look for other pieces with the same look, and a custom solution can be worked out if these are unavailable.
Also, despite trying to keep level requirements for these uniforms as low as we could, not everybody is going to be able to wear them right away. Our offer to help members level up remains standing and we encouage members to ask for it. We regret having to bring character levels into roleplaying, so if anyone has any suggestions for alternatives, we will gladly hear it.
These two reasons combined are why we will continue providing a uniform in the guild bank that everybody can wear. You can try it on through the link in the list above. This uniform will be associated with the new Cadet rank, which we will introduce in the Ranks section just below.
Which ranks do you have and what do they involve?
The Platoon deviates from the 'standard' ranks, which we will explain in detail here.
We prefer to see 10-20 percent of the members as officers (Ensign or above), and there is no maximum number of officers for each rank. Enthousiastic officers-to-be will receive assistance and guidance, rather than feeling like we're making it a bothersome challenge for members to be promoted. Of course, we are most positively inclined to promote members who display our guild's values and show exemplary behaviour IC and OOC.- The General - Not a player. His power in Stormwind is probably comparable to the Commanders of the existing Stormwind guard guilds.
- Captain - A commanding officer of the Platoon. GM.
- Sergeant - A prominent rank and a right hand of the Captains.
- Ensign - An officer role for those capable of leading 5-15 men.
- Specialist - A leader and guide for his/her speciality (infantry, magic users, etc).
- Trooper - A common rank for those who are developing a speciality.
- Cadet - An initial rank for those who are enlisted, but not ready to be a Trooper.
- Alt/OOC - A non-IC rank for those who are inactive/OOC/awaiting an interview.
- Ally - A position for friends of the Platoon, who have earned the trust of its members.
Update on January 9th: Two new ranks have been added, Cadet and Ally.
Cadets are members of the Platoon who are ICly new. They may be here to try out the realm, or still getting the hang of roleplaying, or ICly not entirely convinced that the military is right for them. Cadets will be supplied with the Cadet uniform as linked above in the Uniforms section, but Troopers may continue wearing it after their promotion.
Allies are trusted friends of the Platoon, and frequently hang out with us. An Ally could be someone who protects the guildmembers during a dangerous mission, or a supplying blacksmith, or an IC old friend of a member who starts getting involved in the Platoon's daily ongoings. Of course not everybody who is an ally of the Platoon is also a guildmember; many councilmembers and friends in other guilds can be considered allies. But the position is here if you want it.
On an OOC level, and to a certain degree IC as well, even the lowest rank will have some influence. We listen to and value the opinions of our guild members. However! Do not let that stop you from playing a barky mean old Sergeant! We are still a military guild, even though OOCly we are quite democratic when it comes to decision-making. The Captains usually gather everybody's input and make the final decision.- The War Room of the Castle Keep (to the right of the throne),
- Some things OOC:
How strict are you? I'm new to roleplaying / my race or class / military RP.
OOCly? Not strict at all. We're not going to reprimand players for being inexperienced. Feel free to pick a mentor or throw your questions and concerns into the group. Those with no roleplay experience whatsoever are also welcome, and will receive some guidance in a small group before being properly introduced to RP.
How is the atmosphere in the guild chat and during roleplay?
We're pleased to say we've gatherednineforty-some very nice members already, who are greatly encouraging and helpful. Thank you. Guild chat is usually extended to be a RP raid group, so that non-guildies can also participate in the OOC chitchat. Like almost everybody, we are opposed to OOC drama, but when it happens we'll ask everybody involved to stay calm and act mature.
In which ways is the Platoon contributing to the community?
One of our reasons to create this guild was related to the release of WoD. Large majorities of guilds left for Draenor or went OOC/inactive to explore the new content. We noticed that one, two, perhaps three members of the average Stormwind RP guild was both ICly in Stormwind and LFRP. Since most guards are ICly not allowed to patrol on their own, they were stuck in their homebases.
This is why we picked the angle of reinforcing the guards firstly. Now that the city watch is on the lookout for suspicious persons, the shady side of Stormwind RP is becoming more dynamic as well. Also, since some Platooners are not from here, IC expectations of guilds are not set in stone. Some of our allies might well turn out less law-loving than we anticipated they would be...
Update on January 9th: We have found a comfortable position in both the community and the IC world. We are grateful for this and continue contributing. For example we enjoy welcoming new roleplayers and getting them settled, by providing the information and practical tips that every roleplayer needs to know about. Furthermore, OOCly, we have set up a number of chat groups on skype for good OOC communications with other guilds. Poke Taph if you want to get in on this.
And lastly, we continue to be highly in favour of cross-guild RP, as we've explained in the Activities and events section. We are making plans of starting to populate new roleplay hubs away from Stormwind City, and we look forward to a joint campaign with other military guilds. Those unguilded might enjoy tagging onto the RP groups as well. We aspire to make Defias&Co an even more tight-knit community with lots of interaction and fun to be had.
That was a lot of information. Now, how could people enlist?
The usual. You could come by fully IC to meet us, or you could hang out with us for a little bit before making your decision. Perhaps you would like to roleplay with us as an ally, but do not want to leave your current guild. This is of course no problem. If we are OOC or nowhere to be found in Stormwind, a whisper that you're interested will do the trick.
We'd like to thank all those who contributed to this guild in its early stages with their helpful tips and insights, and still do. Readers, thank you for your interest, and we look forward to seeing you around ICly one way or another.
Artemis & Taph,
Captains of the Gilneas Platoon.

This would be an excellent way for me to introduce Draleo and Pheobe Coldar's cousin, Ronrik Coldar! Since I have not roleplayed him at all as if having been in Stormwind, is it possible to have him ICly actually come with the platoon from the very beginning as they arrive?

I rep this guild! The concept suits the current situation perfectly and they definitely have a good excuse with the majority of Stormwind's forces fighting in Draenor. The two GMs are both experienced and very inclusive and accommodating to newer RPers and it's well thought-out and so far implemented.
Re: [A] The Gilneas Platoon, full introduction (Inactive)
Thank you Wrylas
And Cathee, that'd be lovely! Feel free to contact us in-game to set up some RP surrounding Ronrik's arrival from Gilneas.

Open Sessions by the Ministry of Magic.
Good luck with the guild, but i'll drop a mention that the Minister of Magic is currently hanging around with Wild Tempest who is being rather stranded in a far-reach corner of Draenor, so it may take a moment before the next MoM Open Session is held.

Updates
This post has now been updated with the newest orders from the General.
Outdated information has been scratched, but will remain in the document just for the record.
You'll also see that we've tweaked a few details, most importantly about uniforms and according to our experiences of the balance of power in Stormwind.
