You know what? I'm sorry for bringing it up. It's a hopeless discussion in a world of magic, anyway. Why even bother with a walkie-talkie when you shaman can have the wind deliver a message? I think Thelos hit the nail on the head with "a hodgepodge of whatever seems convenient for the story at that particular moment or whatever feels cool."

Back to Strongholds we go!

Y'know I was basically agreeing with what you and Thelos said, right?

Sanara wrote:Largely unrelated, but I call bull. What kind of Vietnam imagery was there in Pandaria?

Well, I'm not sure if it's enough to count as an objective image invoking Vietnam, but I thought the opening of the Jade Forest, in particular the Alliance version thereof, was very reminiscent of some typical cinematography used in famous Vietnam movies. I think it mostly has to do with the presence of machine guns shooting out of helicopters in an unsullied, tropical enviroment of dominantly green hue (and consequently spoiling the place with their nasty Agent Oranges and whatnot) and the tropes associated with a military team caught behind enemy lines in the jungle having to fend for themselves.

I think this gives a good idea of the kind of imagery I was talking about:

Spoiler:

(2:06 - 7:15 mainly)

The explosions shelling everywhere, the sounds of machine guns rattling, orders trough a crackling radio, all with that green, green background...

For me, at least, it calls to mind famous movie scenes like:

Spoiler:

I wouldn't have been suprised to have heard music like this playing (the assorted images certainly don't hurt, either!)

Spoiler:

Of course using imagery that might remind the player of a certain period in world history (or the narrated version thereof from a highly specific perspective, in this case the US/Hollywood) isn't the same as actually tackling these subject matters in the story, which is I think what you were chiefly talking about; because you're right, the Pandaria storyline wasn't very similar to the Vietcong and Korea wars at all. But that mean it didn't use some of its iconic images! I am speaking purely on the levels of imagery here, not content.

...I can't be the only one that got Vietcong vibes from the Jade Forest, right? Right?

Just me?

All right, then. Must have seen too many Vietcong movies!

What I actually find fascinating is that in Warlords of Draenor, they seem to turning into the opposite direction and returning to more low-techs. The keyword of Draenor is 'Savage'; there's buildings of bone and lots of axes splitting skulls. There seem to be very few helicopters with machine-guns left, if any at all. We'll see how much of the added technology that stuck to World of Warcraft troughout the years (massive skyships of doom, nuclear weapons, machine-guns, etcetera) will carry over into Draenor.

I would say that the Human side of the WoW universe with the Nobles of Stormwind and the human kingdoms in general would really fit with various Lords struggling for power, and even if that would not be the case, having Noble Houses would really grant a new side to civilian and Travelling RP in general. Having Noble House guilds of lords and ladies doesn't neccessarily mean that we need full sclae internal war and game of thrones based intrigue. It would of course feature a somewhat political dominance in the RP, though the main idea of structruring such a guild would really spread worldwide RP around.

Think how it would be if smaller communities in constant communications and factions would each be based around various villages, manors, and castles on the map. Featuring a governing family, bannermen, staff of a manor or keep, and real civilians with farmland, taverns, shops etc..

Or that as a travelling adventurer you really can perform long term travelling because you have an atmoshpere that answers back as you travel, having to pass several villages and stuff to come to your destination.

Of course, this just became my own little fantasies just now, since I doubt the number of roleplayers would be able to sustain such a scale expansion, either that or Stormwind becomes a dead zone (which shall and should NOT happen!)

However, I believe that such could always be done in small scale, escpecially if it mostly features the surroundings of Stormwind to avoid utter isolation. I even know a few people who would really like to start off with guilds such as this.

I think im starting to dream again.. I'll just stop this rambling and move on..... Neutral

During my brief expeditions to Argent Dawn, there where three house guilds fighting over the right to be lord over Darkshire alone. I'm sure that sort of stuff is happening all over the place.

So if you like game of thrones style role-play, Argent Dawn is your realm.

If you want to play Game of Thrones, your only real option is to play Eve online, where you can actually do that.

Ultimately, you cannot play any kind of diplomatic metagame in WoW roleplayed or not, not even between factions (though maybe a little bit between factions).

This is because player have absolutely zero impact on the gameworld or its lore at all, and everything diplomatic ultimately revolves around a mutually agreed status quo, that, and this is the important part, Cannot change without the approval of Both parties.

i.e: The loser has to Agree to lose, for anything to work.

The closest, you'll ever come to anything remotely related to game of thrones RP with actual stakes, was when people were RPing in darkshire, and ABoC was busy interdicting. And we all know how that was resolved.

There are private servers for role-playing that allow players to take a more prominent and impact role in world politics though, I'm sure.

RPing on an open Minecraft server would probably work for the ASoIF-fans:

"Sir, the Lannisters have turned winterfell into a coal mine!"

While it would definitely not be very successful to bring it to a scale of game of thrones, what I am saying is that it would certainly add to, for an example, the civilian RP. The concept would definitely not have to result in open war and the like, though, having a small society centered around a keep/manor/village would probably make an interesting and lively atmosphere, and it would make the roles of civilians more intersting and eventful, as they might then be given a detail to their characters should they live outside Stormwind as for an example: farmers (because frankly, I do Believe most farmers would be outside the capital.)

It is mainly an idea I am throwing open into the air, as I would consider it a rather interesting concept (YOU DONT SAY?!, I know, i'm reptetitive Sad ...)
