There's nothing wrong with your character being a 'Mary Sue'. I have always found this concept to be largely useless and even derogatory to certain styles of writing. Wouldn't it make sense to use an author-insertion character when role-playing? When I play doctor, I usually play myself as as doctor, not a completely different doctor. It's the same for my characters. They're all pretty much inflated aspects of my own personality.
...And yes, Thelos was probably what was best about my personality and Paozi is what is most sinister. Funny how that turned out.

You have a nice, golden name, though.
Martha, I think you should ask less questions, and role-play more. It's the best way to get a good feel for your character and their abilities. Be creative, do fun things, tell epic stories.

The problem with mary-sues isn't the author insertion, or taking certain aspects of your own personality and placing them in your characters. Heck that's perfectly fine.
Its the wishfullfilment aspect of the trope that's just bad characterisation. A character which is soo good at what he is, because he's so good at it, in such a way that it simply defies character progression. And stifles conflict, either between characters or with-himself.
If you establish your character as the biggest baddest wizard around. You cannot expect me to believe he would be in a position to lose said battle, without jumping through hoops.
Which is why Rand's prophecy said he would die in shayol gul. And richard rahl simply decided he didn't want to save the world because the people needed to beg him first.

That Mary-Sue thing is retarded. Cliché is almost impossible to avoid in writing, it's how you interpret and make your own spin on it.

Mary-Sue and cliché are far from the same thing.Vaell wrote:That Mary-Sue thing is retarded. Cliché is almost impossible to avoid in writing, it's how you interpret and make your own spin on it.
A wizard with a pointy felt/cloth hat is a cliché. A character glaringly good at anything said character set's mind to, everyone falls inlove with, and without any flaws. That's the Sue.

This might seem a little out of topic, but how do you destroy a ward on another person that is preventing him from using a specified type of magic?
Re: Shadow magic, how to "Use" it.
Spells designed to break magic. Such as Dispel Magic. Of course, in such a situation, whether the ward holds or is successfully dispelled depends on the skill of the casters involved.

Now now, you wouldn't be using this topic to give you ideas on how to circumvent other players RP now would you?

No no, just using it as a Fact and... I might <_< >_>
That is what shadow magic does best.. And besides, Shadow asked so gently
Right now Martha has been cleansed tho, But I/Dusk has a plan, hiding a Shadowfiend might have been a good idea, if my theory is right.. When that shadowfiend enters Marthas body she will regain her lost powers.

Re: Shadow magic, how to "Use" it.
Nothing wrong in asking ideas and the possible limits to be used in your Roleplaying.
Cleansed? Silly Lighties. They can cleanse a person as many times they want, but if they can't turn your mind, no shackles can prevent you from becoming what you decide to be, like proven above, if that sneaky shadow-wielder hid that shadowfiend by purpose.

Skarain is right, BUT! It doesn't help if people know there is still something inside you, that your mind is still focused on it. So you need to be Sneaky as Skar said at least. At the moment Martha seems too cassual about it.
That said by now two my chars are pretty suspicious. Well actually they know something, but not how very bad it really is. It's only a matter of time when both of them see her as a big danger to others, not just herself and when that comes my char's will do what they see is best in their own morals.
Lesson of the day: Keep your secrets secret and hidden. Trust no one.

Dont wory, I was planning to hold it a secret this time. Cleansing her was just to gain siegmund and the others trust again.
Behind her mask there lies the truth, a shadow deep and dark as night.
The shadow dances in her mind, figuring ways to fight the good.
I'm really getting good at that

What secrets could siegmund hold?
Gods I love Roleplay, always so many questions, so many friendly people and lore. Not to forget the fun, Killing, torturing, laughing, mocking each other, deceiving people, Resurrecting and bringing back the dead trough necromancy, diplomacy, thieving, assassinating, writing the background of people, (Which feels like making a real person sometimes!) and last but not least, making friends and family.. And the silently murder them or betray them, making drama!
I love role-play and there is nothing someone can tell me to change my mind!

Re: Shadow magic, how to "Use" it.
I think I em getting addicted to Shadow magic IRL xD
Its not as powerful as one would think , but when you start understanding the nature of the Shadow an the Light you start looking on yourself as some sort of Priest or paladin. I em starting to feel like one at least.
Here is three things on my view on shadow magic.
My view on the Shadow;
- Shadow magic is natural, just like the light. (The light is life and shadow is death.)
- Shadow magic should be legal. (Martha thinks so at least, but out of character I understand why it is outlawed, but for some reason I get a feeling that the rules are a bit to strict.)

Re: Shadow magic, how to "Use" it.
Shadow magic has always had an inexplicable draw to many players I could never fully understand.
Something about darker natures and being misunderstood, I bet? The amount of 'good' shadowcasters far outnumber the good warlocks and death knights.
Or maybe Shadow is just Sexy.

I bet Martha would just looooove Alph's writing, which states that shadow is natural and the Light is not. :3Martha Silverlight wrote:My view on the Shadow;
