I didn't mean he sees 8 each time in a group. 8 would be his -total- friends. You don't have to talk to everyone just for the sake of it but I've also seen the "nerdy" group be the most judgemental, calling most of the year stupid, arrogant, shit music, pricks without talking to them or knowing them. And nearly all of them are honestly fine, it's far from that classic american highschool vision of the jocks, nerds, goths etc. There isn't really set cliques. Which is good.

Then they're also asocial dickwads on top of being nerds.
The thought that the two are somehow conceptually connected is so passé, get over it. You can be social and a nerd nowadays.
...Just don't push your luck!

All of my friends know I play WoW, and they mock me for it to my face now and then when it comes up but it's all just banter. The two of my friends that also play WoW know I rp, and they mock me for that to my face and we all laugh. It's a hobbie and it's geeky/weird, but if you get offended when people laugh at you for it then you're uptight.
On the other hand if you deny it, more so than admitting, (I mean I don't randomly confession to people I like to brush my teeth, but if they ask I'll say yeah I do.) then that's also lame. Don't do stuff you're ashamed of! :p

Re: WoW And Real Life People
I'm going to re-clarify my position due to the more 'serious' responses in this thread compared to Tzeentch.
I don't look down or pity anybody that openly admits to RPing and/or playing WoW (unless they're completely obnoxious about it). Most of my previous posts, such as the one Pert included in the OP, were intentionally strong/contrarian in a vague attempt to be comedic and create discussion.
I won't be admitting it any time soon however, as I simply do not wish to be associated with it. RP is a private, guilty pleasure; some probably won't like that, but it is for me. Just a personal thing, y'all.

Re: WoW And Real Life People
My closest mates all play games and all have played WoW at some point, so I don't avoid it with them. With Uni mates, all my old college mates etc that I see at the pub - It doesn't get brought up so I've never mentioned WoW. Though, they all know I game. Female or otherwise, the taboo gets removed as long as you remain a little social. Most people play CoD/Fifa nowadays anyway!
As for role-playing. My closest friends know I USED to do it. No one knows I still do, nor would I tell them! If I wasn't a role-player, I'd probably be taken the piss out of myself for doing it!
EDIT: If I'm not out or at uni, I'm at home on my teamspeak. I leave it on most the time and all my closest mates use it everyday. Even if we're browsing facebook or doing work, we just use it for socialising so gaming slots into that.

I don't see what the big deal is ... people are different, some are introverted, some are extroverted, some like having big groups of friends, some small groups. There was this one guy in my year who literally only had one friend - that was it ... and it was me. I'll confess though that initially became friends with him cause he had no friends and I felt sorry for him but I digress, my points is some people are just more of the solitary type or this type or that type, whatever.
And of course they're going to behave like that. They're teenagers who are into things that aren't popular so it gives them a false sense of superiority
And honestly, roleplaying can be kind of (extrmely) awkward sometimes, especially with people I know ooc ... o.O

Funny thing today actually, close friend who does know I play wow and usually jokingly takes the piss out of the few of us who do play it, came over to me and a friend and goes
"your not talking about WoW are you?"
"no diablo 3 actually"
"oh oh right, well that's cool"
at which point I made this face O.o
I'll never understand the difference :L

I think it was that you hadn't told anyone you played magic the gathering but one time when you were at that place where they play it, there was a queue or hold-up outside of the place and you had to wait there standing and your friends/acquittance's rode past on bikes or something and spotted you

That's...
Perfectly fine and understandable.
As for myself, I'm not exactly private about WoW/roleplay, but it's not something I actively identify myself with either. I don't go about introducing myself to people saying "Hi, I'm Maarten, I'm a WoW RPer". It's just one of the many geeky things I enjoy doing, like reading cheesy shonen manga or playing D&D. When the conversation calls for it, I'll talk about it and often have a laugh or two. It's all very mellow. Like I said, I've found most geeky tastes have become socially acceptable. Just don't push your luck and start annoyingly confronting people with it if they're not comfortable with it, just like you wouldn't want those guys talking to you about football, cars, makeup or handbags.

Re: WoW And Real Life People
Hmm. I have no problem with telling people I play WoW, I'm pretty comfortable with that, as the biggest reaction I get is a joke or two at my expense, but never any more.
Very few people I talk to know that I RP, however, as I think a lot more people would judge me for that, sadly. Nearly everyone I know plays games, yet I know of only one other that roleplays.
The funny thing is, that nearly all of my friends who play WoW still don't know I RP as even -them- view RP as "retarded" and whatnot. It's a shame, really.

Hahahaha yes! Damn that was funny. The place was packed! I got there late and ended up near the back of the que to get into the store, then a few friends walked by, stopped and asked what I was doing at a geek/comic book store.

Not as awkward what I told them. "I play a trading card game called Magic the Gathering on tuesday nights." "....................... Oh. Seeya."

If people ask me what I do... I tell them. Which involves playing some games they've never heard of, reading history books, doing tabletop rps and playing trading card games...
I don't know where you all live, because I just get polite nods, and know that that won't come up as a conversation again. Occasionally, whoever it is shares one or more of my interests and we get to a pleasant conversation.
Heck, most people are polite enough and/or interested enough in one of those that even if they don't do it themselves, they're happy to learn (in particular I find people are happy to listen to me talk history at them.)

Re: WoW And Real Life People
People actually find me less annoying when I'm being a geek than when I'm being a normal person because my "normal person personality" is that guy with an IQ Above mensa level who finds that making fun of stupid people trying to be smart is a really funny activity.
I know I'm an asshole and I'm totally fine with it, because as mentioned before, stupid people are really funny and I find some sort of sadistic joy in watching all traces of self confidence leave their eyes when they try to mock me for being pathetic and I end up bringing their total incompetence when it comes to anything related to securing themselves a proper future outside of backtalking people in high school. I actually made a guy drop out of high school because he figured that I was probably right and he'd end up failing it anyways.
Meanwhile, my friend circle are all fine with me gaming and most of them are gamers themselves (I'm still the cool kid here because I'm quite a lot better than most of them at everything in life)
TL;DR: I'm an asshole but I'm not afraid of standing up for what I am.

Re: WoW And Real Life People
I'm rather shy about talking about my WoW playing, to be honest. Though... as a lass, it's mainly because I don't want people assuming that I'm a crazy raider (which usually they do if I mention World of Warcraft) rather than because I'm embarrassed about the RP side.
Though either way, I know lots of people who don't understand the appeal of online games, and a few who do.
Got to say the person whose posts I resonate most with in this thread are Pert's. The whole 'Yeah CoD is great' or 'Diablo is so much fun' but then you go play an MMO and you're a loser? Awkward. What a double standard. For me, the social aspect of WoW is what keeps me from feeling like I'm wasting my time, and while I don't mind discussing that with people if they're willing to listen to the difference between RP and time-wasting grinding, I don't tend to intentionally bring it up.
TL;DR: Most people know I play WoW and that I RP there, but it's not something I tell people at first meeting because it's a little awkward and does have geeky/socially inept connotations.

I both raid and RP actively, yet I've tons of friends and I'm active socially. Yep they know of it, and actually think it's awesome. Around here pretty much everyone plays some sort of game though, even the sport freaks (Even though I'm a bit of one myself). It's actually more likely that you get less accepted if you don't play something. x)

If nothing too great is going on ingame, I will mostly always be in doubt about whether the stigma of playing wow is even worth it. Add that RPers are generally frowned upon by the wow-playerbase at large too, it's bothersome. Heck, if I hadn't been doing instances with irl-mates every now and then I think I'd just drop out.

There hasn't been any difference in my life or how I've been treated at all ever since I started playing, no stigma whatsoever. Then again, I guess all might not be in that situation.

Ayep its pretty same to me. Most my friends have played wow, though they didn't get into Roleplay like they were supposed to when we bunch moved here from....Sunstrider i think. We raided some time before i lost my soul to Roleplaying
I got no problem admitting that i play +6h per day and have no life in the eyes of others .
