I once offended a family by taking off my shoes, apparently. My sweaty feet (ahem) apparently did more harm to the floor (read: their mental health) than my filthy shoes. I didn't know I had sweaty feet, .. I didn't.

Here it's even the other way around. It's considered inappropriate to take off your shoes when there's guests. Same goes for the guests. Even when I'm alone I wear those toe-things or espadrilles but whenever there's guests, on go the shoes

I like the shoe thing. Doesn't ruin my socks and there's door mats for sweeping. I much prefer cleaning a filthy shoe of the parquetry than tolerating someone's smelly socks haha

I think nearly all arabic (and maybe even muslims) do it too. we also have special flipflops that we wear in the bathroom. the bathroom floor is considered unclean so you dont walk in there barefoot (and also since we have different ie better hygiene standards we're always cleaning the bathroom floor so it's sometimes still a little wet), and the soles of your shoes are also considered unclean which is why you also take them off. stop being so racist pert jeez educate yourself a little man
