Are you a 'Mary-Sue'? Empty Are you a 'Mary-Sue'?

Post by Velynia Wed Mar 07, 2012 9:57 am

Shamelessly stolen from the Argent Dawn Forums, I had a look, and it's quite good. It's essentially a 'Mary Sue' test, and is fairly accurate, though does have a few faults Such. as - being evil apparently makes you insta-sue D:

I got 10. Just sly of being a Borderline Sue :s

I hate these tests and how they pretend they are able to formulize what makes for a good or - heaven forbid - "Original" character. I mean how does the fact that you spend more than a day thinking of the right name for your character make it worse of a character?

No offense to any one who uses these kinds of tools to better their roleplay of course, but I personally stay away from these things. I've always hated the whole concept of the "Mary Sue" outside of its original meaning (which was basicly the stand-in author avatar in fan fiction who would interact with the cast in a dream or wish fulfilling manner).

And its still shabby >.>

its still more about clichées then projecting yourself into a character..

since why the fuck does my Mary sueness goes up a point if your paladin is connected to the light?

but it also goes up, if your paladin is a fallen knight!

lol.

Cliche characters are also fun!

In fact, I tend to act on cliche's ever now and then... Just because well.. They're so delicious.

As said, it's fairly buggy (At least I goddamn hope they're bugs). Such as having being in prison immediately raises your 'Number' to 13 ;_;

I just removed "Does your character have empathy/telepathy" and my score went from 27 to -4. This would be especially cruel to draenei because all draenei have a weak form of empathy and can sense eachother's emotions to some extent (though not of other races)

Yeah. Buggy would be putting it nicely.

Got 7.

However:"Is your character an elf?" is instantly 3 points.
That's racist.

How does having Empathy make you a Mary-Sue o.o? Surely there should at least be different options for Telepathy and Empathy, they aren't even anywhere near related.

Just one of the many reasons I think this test is stupid.

Well if Djego filled in this test himself, he'd be an uber-sue...

mostly because of his sexual frustrations...

I like how spending a long time on a name, is instantly 9 points.

31 - 40 - The Uber-Sue - Apparently, you weren't watching for cliches when you made your character. You've got a lot of work to do to make your character a little more realistic and a little less... well. Annoying. Do your best, though, and maybe your character will still be salvagable.
Awwww yeaaaah.

Fun thing, if I take anything Wellsworth-related out of the test I get a much "better" score Very Happy

I find it fun that having had a story where your character has permanentl died, thus doesn't exist anymore really, gives 3 points.
Since we all know a character dying is cliche!

I think it's probably better applied to fanfiction characters more than roleplay characters, but yeah, it's quite silly in the sense that everything seems to be a cliche. I reckon that if anybody deliberately went out of their way to get a score of 0 they would find they have quite a boring character on their hands. xD

Post by Emrys Wed Mar 07, 2012 12:08 pm

Did not manage to get above 10 for Emrys, even when ticking boxes I was not too sure about. She has some vision-related talents when touching objects, and was at one point able to pick up certain memories from locations as well, they had to ward her mind because she almost died. Razz and she can sit in her boyfriends dreams when she sleeps to keep them clear. So I checked telepathy and skills beyond their class just for good measure.

Next to that she actually can't sing for shit (she'll have a lot of fun, but it will not sound very clear) and is horrible with pronouncing foreign languages, she studied them enough to have the vocabulary, but everythig is pronounced with a thick accent. Perhaps compare it to a french person trying zo zpeak engliesh Razz

And indeed, going through all lengths to score a 0 would end up in a terribly boring characater, on the other hand I find a char being too perfect a bit boring as well.

Ended up with a flat zero for Saevir. It might have been a bit higher if I'd included the stuff that applied during the first few months of TBC, before his character really settled in, but I can hardly remember most of it anymore.

Indeed. I think the only way that one could score 0 would be being a modest, illiterate Farm-Worker whom has no special traits, nor has left his respective farm.
What did scare me, however, was the person whom scored -3 on the original Argent Dawn Thread o.o

Yup, which is why I don't really believe in such tests... For roleplay characters, anyway. I still think they hold some merit for fanfiction/original fiction characters though, or at the very least to help avoid the gaping cliches. Smile

hmm, are the appearance traits "plain" and "ugly" bugged for you guys as well, since they should be giving -2 and -3 respectively, but they don't when i fill them in.

so i could only make a character of -24 by clicking all the negative sue items.
