God forbid they use marketing. What a devil of a science, isn't it?Lyniath wrote:Yep.
And adds the word "amazing" to every sentence in the marketing of said product.
It's funny how they are now advertising their cloud for iPhone as if the idea of a cloud storage is BRAND NEW
Shame to see sites as spotify aren't beneficial for some artists. Although I'm not that surprised. I wonder how sites like Beatport compensate their artists. I imagine that's more fairly done and easier to do it respectively to how many times shizzle was downloaded. I'm not sure but I believe many artists have shifted their focus for profits on concerts and festivals already. (I can only really speak for the genre that I'm familiar with: electroshizz) That shit pays. I remember when I was in the organisation of my ball back in highschool, we paid 6000 euro for a fancy electro band for .. 1-2 hours. I don't want to know how much Swedish House Mafia costs per hour.

Your right Nithel for all genres, live shows pay a lot, festivals are a money tree.
But when a band or artist is small and still scraping money to put fuel into their tour van, album sales are quite a big deal to them. A lot of bands and artists though have got around that by accepting online free downloads and instead attempting to make money from merch instead, and that has also worked.
It's a hard world, and it get's worse when the huge record companies who only see a bottom line come in and make it harder.

"Meanwhile, let's download and store somewhere else as much content as we can before they shut everything down and leave us only the choice to listen to the most stupid pop star around and watch the most ridiculous movies ever made. That's their ideal world: you are just a consumer, just buy their garbage and shut up.
There is another way to look at this story. If you (whether a conservative bigot or a liberal intellectual), think like me that their garbage is worth nothing, and in fact, even a danger to our society (either because it promotes amoral behavior or because it degrades culture), then you almost have the moral obligation to do anything you can to damage their business plan. Hence let us rejoice if they indeed lose money out of the Web. Dear entertainment industry, if you go bankrupt, i would personally come and dance on your corporate graves. We do miss Megaupload (even those who never used it) but we will NOT miss you.
We know who the real enemy is. We know where to find it. We don't really know how to fight it because it is so much more powerful than us and their armies of attorney and lobbyists can easily throw us in jail, but we will find ways. You can throw in jail one person one time, but you cannot throw in jail all people all the time.
We are all pirates, and proud of it."

That's a fair point. Theyre selling very lazily made content on a low budget for maximum profit and expect us to just take it? Granted, there are exception, but it's retarded that people can get rich off things that are BARELY TV/music/games. This weekend I was forced to watch Food Network because a show about someone liking a pork brain sandwich was literally the only good thing on.
It's also shocking that companies can make their own laws to suit their own interests. USA really needs to up it's game there, and stop being a corporate bitch.

TV, movies and the entire entertainement industry exist because people like what they see. There's an economical function: Demand = Supply. Movies, music, TV, it all exists in its current format because a majority of people are demanding it. You vote with your wallet for a big part. Entertainement companies are making this kind of entertainement because people are demanding it and paying for it. But don't make this into a 'They're selling junk and they're making money of it. So unfair.'-debate.
I agree that the entertainement business is an old model. And entertainement companies should work out something new out of their own. But they most likely won't so soon unfortunately. Because the old model still earns them a bunch of money. And as long as that money train keeps rolling, there will only be rare exceptions who revolutionize. But this is as much their fault as it is of the people who keep buying said entertainement. (Not telling you to pirate here. I'm saying if you don't like it, don't watch it.)

They were able to shut down 4% of the internets (megaupload) without SOPA, so perhaps they'll leave it in the drawer for now.
It just takes time (shock!) to shut down stuff properly instead of empowering companies to close down anything when they find it profitable, with their All-Terrain Attack Lawyers.

Re: SOPA and PIPA
though on the other hand, the popularity of tv shows, is still based on the Nielsen Ratings, which is a flawed way to determine the amount of viewers that look at a program..
not saying you're not right Nithel, but the popularity of big Network shows (even the crappy ones) standard gets higher ratings then some quality cable shows, because not everyone with the boxes in their house has those channels.
additionally, the people with those boxes, aren't a correct representation of the population either...
but that said, i agree with your sup-demand point, and people do like what they see, even though they might like other things more if it were presented to them...

I agree with you. A bigger offer of more quality entertainement would be nice. And I think TV series have come a big way with this.
But my point was more that I don't like it when people mindlessly blame one side (the entertainement industry in this case) and believe it's their fault and that we can't do anything about it. Trenching one party against an other has never really helped anyone but soldiers. I'm saying we need people to look at this differently. Think about it yourself instead of only pointing fingers at another party by saying it's their fault and their responsability to fix things.

Re: SOPA and PIPA
That is very interesting!
As someone unfamiliar with the Nielsen rating, does it merely monitor how much people watch a show and give that a rating? Like: in 2010-2011 8,8% of the people with a TV watched American Idol according to these ratings?
I know Belgium has this system where they give out how much people watch a certain program. No idea how accurate it is, but it's mostly the higher quality stuff that gets very high numbers. Usually these high numbers go to our public broadcasting. (The government has its own channels here where they try to make quality TV with a purpose: like the promotion of art, or special subjects, etc...) I think the highest viewer program ever in Belgium is actually a rather intellectual quiz. (De allerslimste mens ter wereld)

What the Nielsen ratings do, is to give "Boxes" that monitor Television viewing activity. those boxes, are distributed amongst a "statistical accurate representation of the population" and then they Monitor, both the viewing density (i.e how many people have turned their boxes on) and what people are watching.
and from those numbers the "population" that watches a specific show is extrapolated.
so if 1% of the boxes is watching say American Idol, then 1% of the US households is amused to be watching american idol, which will be 2.5mil viewers.
and its the system that most countries use, as does the netherlands, as does belgium.
The "rating" itself is calculated, with some formula, but its not directly proportional to 1 NR is 1% of the views, how its calculated, i'm not sure exactly and cant be arsed to figure out.
additionally, survey's happen amongst focus groups that do not have those boxes, to generate additional data.
but following this example, as a consumer "not watching a show" has very little effect, unless you have one of them boxes in your house. but it does have its merits in seeing how good a show is doing. or not.
so if you look at the dutch "viewing numbers" http://www.kijkonderzoek.nl/component/Itemid,45/option,com_kijkcijfers/file,dp-0-1-0-p
you'll see that in order to do "well" on sunday morning, you don't actually have a lot of viewers, (Eva op zondag) only 77k, but you do have 12.5% of all current tv watchers tuned into your program. but only a rating of 0.5
