Re: SOPA and PIPA
I sometimes wonder if they actually attempted to make decent legislation, or if they just skillfully roled their forheads over the keyboard and called it a bill.
At least it gives me a clue as to where some of my random BG teammates come from.

I think the fact that politicians have about as much a clue of what's going on as your random BG teammate doesn't help
They just pump out laws without thinking of many of the practical repercussions. It's sad..
In Belgium since this year they put in a law to get a tax... on a tax. So you pay a 25 euro tax to register a document for example. (This is a fixed tax of 25 euro.) But now they're putting 21% TAV on that. So you pay 25 euro * 21%. What sense does it make to tax a fucking tax with TAV -_- That's not the point of a tax like TAV.. aarghgghgh

The entertainment industry doesn't like that people are warching for free, content that is better than the mediocre crap that they churn out.
God forbid they block steam, because you can have links in your profile page that could POTENTIALLY lead to pirate sites.

Part of the problem is they're stuck in an old model before the internet became what it is today. I'm curious though for sites like Hulu if that went beyond the U.S would it help piracy issue's that much more? I believe Hulu is a legal streaming service of television which profits from advertising or so I hear.
In terms of gaming. Steam while it does have faults has done an amazing job at reducing piracy somewhat, as in their ideal is to give a better gaming service to the customer to reduce the chances of Piracy.

You mean that entertainement industry is angry because people watch -their- mediocre crap for free? I think they have a right to feel the need to adress this issue. It's their copyrighted 'crap' as you call it. Internet is killing their business models slow but steady.Lyniath wrote:The entertainment industry doesn't like that people are warching for free, content that is better than the mediocre crap that they churn out.
Part of the blame is on them aswell as I pointed out in other posts as they should by now really be thinking of alternatives to offer their entertainement on the internet via new business models. I still believe sites like Hulu could benefit from going beyond US if they offer a good service. In the end, it's as was pointed out, it's about changing a mentality. Encourage people to choose for paying services that give entertainement over the illegal free ones by offerning a good product/model.

I was merely trying to answer your question whether or not Hulu in Europe would help against piracy. I believe Hulu and similar services would yes.

Well the guy was saying partly too was that those companies didn't like "us" making our own stuff that drew viewers away from their content. This is all basically to give rich companies more money.

Re: SOPA and PIPA
Spotify is actually a pretty terrible system for artists. Most of the income it generates goes to Spotify and the big record companies that have signed the deal to have "their" music available on Spotify.Nithel wrote:
On the other side, it's about due time that companies start focusing on offering cheaper alternatives to the existing entertainement industry. Spotify is an amazing example. A yearly pass to listen to music? Yes please. Why can't this happen for series, movies, maybe this model even has potential for games.
Few days ago a certain finnish artist mentioned how his band's latest single has been played on Spotify 400 000 times. What have they gotten from this popularity? 50 euros. That's something like 0.013 cents for each listen.
Artists get the biggest potential income when they go self-published. But that means less income for the record companies which is a big no-no for them. Self-published artists also benefit from sites like Youtube as they're a relatively easy way to promote their music. On the other hand stuff like SOPA would put a stop to that.

Re: SOPA and PIPA
As mentioned, the PC Gaming industry has discovered how to combat piracy by using platforms such as Steam to release and support games, and give people a reason to pay for it rather than just copy it for free.
Yes Piracy is wrong, whether game, film, music or any other media and I take no part in any of it, however it is VERY easy to see why people do it, so long as the entertainment industries rely on a heavily outdated business model they will continue looking for acts such as SOPA to destroy what they see as a cancer on their profits.
I love how the music industry says it's to protect artists... They are the biggest problem for the musical world, sooner the business is removed from it the better. Spotify is also little better, in fact a LOT of smaller bands who actually need the money from record sales are pulling out of it very quickly.
In time though an act like this WILL be passed, it's inevitable, there is no way the ruling powers will leave an open place like the internet where we can all have free speech and our own ideas to exist, it goes against everything they want from the public.

Re: SOPA and PIPA
All controlling governments try to pass themselves off as free, and all free nations secretly want to be Orwellian police states.
Plus, games at slightly better suited to a system like steam, especially the games that use VAC. Pirated games like that can't receive updates or play online with the majority who payed for the game.
And the music industry can piss off. Start making actual music and stop promoting your rehashed clone albums before you start pulling this nonsense.

Re: SOPA and PIPA
Ofcourse they do... They have been fighting like crazy to keep their songs on iTunes, creating such a closed system so nobody else can use it... And guess what is copyrighted? That system and all that is connected with it. Ever wondered why you cannot plug in any other type of mobile phone/mp3 player and let iTunes work with it...

Yep.
And adds the word "amazing" to every sentence in the marketing of said product.
It's funny how they are now advertising their cloud for iPhone as if the idea of a cloud storage is BRAND NEW
