If your non-us, It advises you just contact your local MP or government representative via phone call, seeing as writing would do nothing.
Or its suggested what Lyniath said.

- Spoiler:
- Let's be honest, the people behind SOPA/PIPA are smart, very smart. They know without a doubt the bill will not put a dent in piracy. The kind of people who pirate and run piracy services are far too smart to be brought to heel by mere legislation and have continued to elude the best efforts of the US and it's lackeys. SOPA/PIPA exists for one reason, to protect an aging and crooked business model, dominated by large corporations who are slowly but surely being eroded by people like you and me. These corporations want to stifle the internet because the internet is the biggest threat to their dominance that has ever existed. For decades, through control of radio stations and television channels, corporations have made bank, but now, all the money in the world can't save them from guys in their bedrooms and home-made studios creating content that is more relevant to the current generation. The variety the big media corporations refused to provide because it "wasn't profitable", is now being provided by hundreds of thousands of amateur, semi-pro and professional independent creators and directors and we're all competing for the most important currency of all, time. The time you spend watching our material is time you don't spend watching theirs. It's money directly out of their pocket that they could have been earning before the internet came along and that's the hilarious thing about this whole deal. Piracy is not what's killing their profits, completely legitimate competition from the internet is. They use the cause of "fighting piracy" as a trojan horse to force through bought and paid for legislation to kill independent content creation for good because they can see the end is nigh for their aging and increasingly irrelevant business model. They know they cannot win legitimately, so they do what they've always done, exploit a corrupt political system to bully and extort their way to what they want.
This is what SOPA/PIPA are really about and that is why you should oppose them. You are standing up for what your generation represents, just as previous generations have done the same on a slew of different issues. As much as those in power would like us to believe we are the apathetic, lazy generation. The truth is we are anything but and that scares the shit out of them.

Re: SOPA and PIPA
I'm actually in favour of a SOPA-like regulations. Not SOPA itself, that is a very silly bill. But something to reduce how easy it is nowadays to pirate music/games/movies/series.
On the other side, it's about due time that companies start focusing on offering cheaper alternatives to the existing entertainement industry. Spotify is an amazing example. A yearly pass to listen to music? Yes please. Why can't this happen for series, movies, maybe this model even has potential for games.
I'm a big fan of Big Bang theory but it doesn't air in my country. Why can't there exist a way that I can follow the newest episodes on the internet without having to resort to piracy?
ps: I actually have something that kind of does what I described. I'm sure it exists in most countries. It's a digibox. You can basically rent movies/series from your tv. But I am unaware of such a system being in place on the internet. Maybe there is though. I'm not very savvy.

Nithel, the funny thing is in america you have two webpages online that are fairly cheep. Hulu and Netflix. I think Hulu is fully add funded and netflix is supposedly not expensive at all. We just lack them here in Europe.
Not everything but a lot of non cable Television exists on both of those sorces. Not things ten years old, but the more recent stuff.
I also agree that something has to be done against pirating. Both from the digital entertainment section as well as the fake brand fabrications etc. But a nuklear strike directed at things far to vague is not the way to go.
Much of what is happening in SOPA and PIPA are the entertainment buissnes being unwilling to change how they do buissness. They've had thirt to fourty years time to really do it (VCR/BETA), and the last fifteen to see that there really is no going back.
Yet changes has only really come the last five years, and generally from small innovative companies.
To stop piracy you need better pinpoint methods, not blanket stops.
Most importantly, you need to get the people to stop doing it. You don't do that with laws. You do that by raising public insight. Which will be far harder to do.

Re: SOPA and PIPA
Aye. I kind of agree. I fear it's just not possible to stop piracy with laws, regulations and bans. At least not without harming sites that contain a lot of copyrighted works. (For example youtube)
I think a better approach is to offer alternatives. To give an example: Spotify launched in Belgium and it's very succesful I believe. Lots of friends are on it and paying for music! I constantly hear people talking about it, using it, being very happy about it. It shows that people are existed about these cheaper alternatives.
Sites like Hulu and Netflix sounds amazing indeed. But to my knowledge there are no real alternatives in Europe. The funniest part is that some series such as True Blood actually put some episodes on the site to watch. But I can't view it as an European. Huzzah..
As Addendum but not really on topic:

- I find the entertainement business in its entirety overpriced. And I really fear part of the problem is because piracy is so easy, they want to squeeze every penny from the few people still paying. One of my favourite things in the world is to go to a cinema and watch movies. But 12 euro for a movie? Really?

Legal alternatives always trumphs punishing laws. A lot of piracy happens because people want to consume more media than they can afford. And want their own mixes, not the mix the radio offers them.

As for SOPA/PIPA. The entertainment industry is unwilling to adapt to the times, I think they tried the same thing to VCRs. If they just did that, like through the means described by Nithel, they'd have far less problems with piracy.
