Im sorry...but imo hip hop, rap, dubstep, "dance" music are NOT music...
hip hop and rap are effectively someone reciting nursery rhymes and adding swear words every now and then.
dubstep and dance music are just....noise.

how cute... i've had this debate with close-minded 'rock' fans too many times to get into again, especially when im getting progressively more drunk as the minutes go by

just saying though, if you think either of these are just reciting nursery rhymes with swear words added, or noise (essentially, all music is 'just noise') - then you know nothing about music

Hmm...considering that I play the guitar, the saxaphone, have played in an orchestra for six years, and have got a degree in music...I'd say i know about music.

Technically speaking yes, they are music. But in my opinion, they aren't what I would call music. Thats just what I think. Just my own taste. And as for the nursery rhyme remark I made...thats just what rap sounds like to me that doesn't actually have a proper origin to it.

You see all these rappers running around and it just...degenerates from what it originated as. Effectively making them as effective a message as a nursery rhyme. That's what I was referring to when I said they sounded like nursery rhymes.

for someone with a degree in music, i'd expect you to at least argue your case better (or argue any case, for that matter).

no biggie though (hurr hurr), i don't really mind that people miss out on whole genres of music because of ridiculously backward notions of what music 'is' (particularly in regard to electronic music). seeing as you believe the amount of instruments you can play gives more credibility to your argument though, i can play both the instruments you listed, drums, keyboard to a decent level and various other instruments to a lower standard. do i win?

on another note, Oversteps by Autechre is probably one of my favourite physical releases, notwithstanding the fact it is some great IDM, but the CD case can fold up to create an awesome triangle pyramid thang which stands up by itself or it can be hang as a poster. WIZARDRY.

I've got a bit of a thing for folk music on the sly, y'know just the enchanting sort of stuff. I'm quite a new fan of harp covers. My current favorite.

Sigh. While I don't listen to rap or hip hop, I admit that it takes some amount of talent to do what they do. I may not like it, but that's just me.
All music is just noise. All sounds we do are just noise. When we speak it's just noise. If you've paid attention to biology class about the vocal cords and the ear-drums you'd understand why you're wrong, and if you'd understand that the human brain is diffrent person to person. What appeals to one wont appeal to the next one.
