My friend just got two direct rejections from two medical schools in the UK
I'm so disappointed, she's a PERFECT candidate I feel ... I think she was just unlucky in her university choices. I don't think she applied to places that best suited her qualifications and application ... ugh bleh. Two more though still so I'm still very very very hopeful !!!

Did that doing a screaming contest with one of my old bands vocalist... He won, I ended up spitting blood for two days... It hurts and I feel your pain!
Warning: Rant about warhammer 40K, if it makes no sense, ignore.
My rant! God damn F***ing Space Marines! And the God Damn F***ing Space Marine Fanbois!
My Gaming Club has done well to make sure the little kiddies and said Space Marine fanbois stay at the Games Workshop store and leave us grown ups alone to play without hearing how awesome Space Smurfs are. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with normal Marine players, it's the kids who seem to think they should be an auto win army because it says so in the books. Every ability any other army has pales in significance compared to what Space Marines can do. (Being a 'Nid player and being told that Space Marines should dominate Close Combat too because well, they are space marines nearly lead me to implant my Metal Hive Tyrant into his head.) This is of course made better when you get to table (Win by annihilation.) said fanboi child, but even that tastes hollow when they then tell you how in Real Life (Yes because a GAME set thousands and thousands of years in the future is RL) Space Marines would win because they can't lose, ever, just makes it a sucky victory.
I'm probably the only 40K player out there who actively dislikes Space Marines, find their fluff, the way they look, the way they play and the general 'epicness' of them dull. I know and accept this, I've been a 'Nid player since I got into them in 2nd edition back in 1995/1996 so I guess at times I seem the same about them, but I don't just print out lists from the internet and expect them to work because they won some tournie (The difference kids, that tournie winner knew how to play, you don't.) I actually know my army, it's weaknesses and strengths, I can usually tell you the entire statline of any unit including effects of any options I've added. Therefore if I get fed up with said kids trying to twist rules to suit their version of 40K where Space Marines can do everything better than everything else I should be allowed to insult them until they cry. Including, and I quote "Well Space Marines have enhanced senses, as it says in (Some book I've never read, NOT a rulebook or codex.) So they can sense where your hidden Genestealers are." The rules say you can't, accept it dumbass.
Thing is, I shouldn't just blame the kids, Games Workshop made the damn Space Marines the poster boys of 40K so that has caused a lot of it I guess, but I'm fed up with 90% of players under the age of 18 being Marine players and confusing fluff for game rules to make sure they always win because they are Space Marines!
TL:DR I am a geek that plays 40K at the age of 29, I hate Space Marines and Kids who love them.

Hmm i know how you feel as a chaos marenes player I fine the normal mareanes to perfect and goodie.. all kids chose them for this reason thow where i am they tent to move to "better" armies at around 13.. but yeah i have had a few rule benders try there tricks from time to time to secure a win

Re: The vent thread
Rule Benders in general suck, we have a few at the club from all ages. Stupid really, we all have a rulebook and most of us have at least read every Codex at some point so the only people who get caught out are the new guys to the club who get put off coming again.
I'm not overly competitive, I like to win and don't like losing when I know it was my fault, but I don't feel the need to cheese my list or bend rules to get, what is then, a hollow victory in a friendly game. In a Tournie I may make a slightly more cheesy list, as a 'Nid player you have to since everyone else brings loads of tanks to battle!

No, I hate them too xD and know lots of others who do. I like playing SoB as they have the same base armour and weapons, but have more varied abilities, feel more balanced and have a MUCH better style. Also had Eldar, but was useless at playing them.
Space Marines are just too attractive to the new kids who feel they MUST win, and want to bend the rules. They're the "super special super human super perfect super soldiers", and all the kids wanna be badasses. But as you said, GW build them up to be too epic, they're the main players, and I hate them for that in the same way I instantly dislike Thrall or the Argent Crusade in WoW. If The creators are putting tons of effort into making something epic, I won't like it, because it always feels overdone. Epic is just for "kewl kidz"

The thing that's great about building something up to be "Epic" is that when it finally does show up, you can do a complete 180 and blast it out of the sky.
- "Like Silchas Ruin in Reapers Gale":
Where everyone is making him be this big baddass fucking thing and standing in his way is a sure death penalty, because he's this ancient creature of lost times, rivalled only by his brother and the like, just to when he finally turns into a dragon Veers around on a few random soldiers, ready to bring death and destruction to the entire city, a grenade in the face is enough to say Bye Bye

Lol xD I wish they'd done that in WoW. Build up the Cata trailers of Deathwing being huge and epic and evil, and the first dungeon is just "poke him with sword, dies"

I personally dislike it when people hate Space Marines solely because of the gits who play them horribly or wank about them in the manner Chrys described. Isn't that sort of like hating Portal because of the really irritating fans who never let go of the "The Cake is a Lie" meme?
I quite like Space Marines (and used to field them but I haven't played the tabletop in years T_T ) and I'm inclined to think that the biggest issue with them is overexposure. Gief more books focusing on the Eldar or the Tau and less damn Imperial Guard/Inquisition/Spehss Mahreens novels!
Edit: Or a book written featuring a Tyranid point of view protagonist. Here's an excerpt from how this hypothetical book might be narrated:

Thats the problem, overexposure. They're canonically supposed to be rare and elite, but they're shown more in every aspect of 40K canon (tabletop, games, books, etc...) than everything else that they feel, to americanise, "dime-a-dozen". And this overexposure then leads to more effort being put into them than other armies, hence how there are now tons of specialised codices for diff. Chapters, whilst all eldar craftworlds/imperial regiments/Tyranid hive fleets and all their potential individual regimes, specialist units (and in the latter case, genetic mutations) are bundled under one race codex.

The Tyranid point of view would be awesome for a book, could do it from the Hive Mind and it would go like this:
Saw Food, sent out army to get food, ate food, Moving on to find more food.
Seriously though, that is why I hate Space Marines, if they weren't over-exposed I may like them, indeed there is a lot to like about them, but the more I see them in games, in books, in films, the several codexes made for them, I just can't stand them anymore. And then the over-use by people playing the game, for an elite army I face them more than any other, just get bored of seeing them.

That's why I ultimately decided to get an Eldar army (although I quit shortly after with a very small army, only playing a handful of Eldar matches), the Space Marines being "elite" seems to mean that "Five rounds rapid" is pretty much a viable strategy. I tended to build Marine armies with big guns and just walk across the battlefield wiping out anything dumb enough to get in my way. The tabletop equivalent of a Faceroll, if you will.
Eldar proved to be a lot more delicate and being successful with an Eldar army comprised mainly of different unique Aspect Warriors certainly makes you feel like a damn master of the game.

I had Eldar when I was 12 xD nowhere near competent enough to use them skilfully. But god DAMNIT I tried! And against space marines I still got the bastards terminators.
