Because they changed levels 1-60 instead of added significant end-game content. People at max level found the expansion didn't have much to offer them, since Blizz focused on the low levels, so quit. The vast majority of the content for Cataclysm is based around stuff a good deal of current players are not going to experience (not everyone has an alt nor wants to level one just to experience the content).
I imagine numbers will rise again and stay up once MoP is out, due to its focus on endgame content.

I never played the first one, but
-Vikings
-No Sub
All I need.
And I'm at least happy Cata wasnt all about endgame.

Not to mention most aspects of the game was ruined for the sake of BIG NUMBERS.
Or well, pvp was. And everything was so simplyified.
I endured/endure Cata for the RP rather than the game itself. And where I don't stand with many people is a single fact. I don't look forward to a "better mmo" like GW2 etc. I don't care if there's RP in it? I want the Warcraft Lore RP. Sad it is that the only Warcraft game with RP is failing.

Wow Lore is being murdered too, sadly. As much as I love aspects of the lore, I'm fed up of superheroes and ridiculous choices.
Added to the fact that the factions I loved for their lore and personality - Kael-belves, Scarlet, Defias - have been/are being killed off, and all the focus now is about how Varian and Thrall save the universe.

It is the primary concern of game story though.
But the best lore is player created.

Sad that you're stuck so hard in the Lore.
Tbh the WC lore is decent I just want the RP. And the better medium for it is better. And GW2 seem's to be far better for it compared to WoW.
And what I know of the worlds lore it is very solid.
Still, I go where the RP takes me!

Re: Subscribers. You there?
In terms of lore in WoW...many things feel like they're "adjusted" in order to shut up the RPers and still be able to have a somewhat decent lore backup for whatever PvE bosses there are to battle in each expansion. But honestly? It feels halfassed. There are too many recycled ideas by now. Sure, it's their lore and they're free to do with it as they see fit, but some things are just....gah.Annabeth Helmsley wrote:Am I missing something? >.> Because I don't actually have much to complain about the lore, yes some choices are a little predictable and other times just a little to " out there ", but overall. Re: Subscribers. You there?
I'm not too pissed off with the lore but I did not like that Thrall questline where we go rescued him with his brown orc bitch at all. Just seemed very cheesy and too in your face compared to the epic gradual love story Metzen promised.
There was waaaaaaaaaaaay too much focus on Thrall, especially for an MMO. He's basically the Goku of Warcraft and that looks like it's gunna continue in Dragon Soul.
That's the only huge thing I can think of that I don't like about the Lore atm.
There's still really epic Lore in Warcraft though.

This is what WoW lore is about really. Brief justifications for endless bosses and over the top quests. There used to be thought and effort put into it, but now it's just picking from the cliche box.

Re: Subscribers. You there?
i don't really agree with the notion that theres ever been a 'golden-age' of WoW lore, where there was lots of effort put into it. throughout its history its been fairly patchy, cliched lore with a few original bits here and there. its certainly gotten worse, and nowadays what original ideas (or well pulled off cliches) they had are being totally obscured by the massive shadow cast by Thrall and all the other super-awesome-bad-ass-heroes. you're playing the wrong game if you expect anything other than largely average lore from world of warcraft.Lyniath wrote:There used to be thought and effort put into it
WoW lore in my opinion, and i cannot really express why at this time in the morning, has always been better when it focuses on Lordaeron. how the noble Silver-Hand get gradually more and more fanatical as all they know is destroyed around them during the fall of Lordaeron, forming the Scarlet Crusade and then becoming even more zealous; is one of my favourite parts of WoW lore. shame they had to fuck that up too...

So is this something you notice in game? If anything I would say that there have been an increase of interest lately. More random RP, more new players and more applications.

Re: Subscribers. You there?
I adore Lordaeron. The most enjoyable section of Warcraft lore for -me-, is the fall of it and the betrayal of Arthas, as well as the Legion and Scourge fighting over it. I for one.. however, despise The Scarlet Crusade and why people can't seem to let it die.
Anyway to the point, throughout the years of WOW people have always bitched and complained, and bigged up some new game that's gonna hop along and CHANGE everything. It rarely happens, I'm not saying WOWs gonna live for ever.. But I don't understand these people, jizzing over the first post on the apparent death of Warcraft thread.

It's not about quantity, it's about quality And I doubt anyone starting the game right now would stick around for the next 6 years, now would they? There's no reason to stick around for that long, mainly because the content is so popcorn easy at the moment that everything's achieved within a few weeks.Frostfeather wrote:So is this something you notice in game? Not saying "OMFG WOW'S DYING!!!!!1!1!" or anything but after all these years, it surely has lost its flavor and the prestige it used to have. They made it more casual friendly, so more people can play, but that obviously has disadvantages.

Re: Subscribers. You there?
Well, the game is 6 years old. that's the biggest problem. and every new expansion is a rework of the previous systems, to pique interest of the existing players, but in the end its still the same repetitive stuff. There's simply nothing new being introduced that keeps people playing.
Name the things that changed in the game in the past 6 years that drastically changed your game-play.
and that's not a new race, or new talents. or a different questing look.
I can't really find one. at the end its all the same things, and that's fine since it works, but after 6 years its time for something new.

Focus for hunters!
But well, I don't think it actually qualifies for "Drastically changed" just "changed"...

It's like construction. You can't build houses upon houses on a out-dated support structure.

I had played this game for a long time before I even understood the concept of 'endgame'. I loved it because the lack of prestige. That you just logged on and played in this fantastic universe. If only I had understood the RP-concept back then...Mandui wrote:It's not about quantity, it's about quality And I doubt anyone starting the game right now would stick around for the next 6 years, now would they? So it basically took me nearly 6 months to reach level 60. Hey, it was not that bad back then! pretty average in my guild. Then it was basically people having their own agenda for quite a while. Some farmed BGs, some ran Strat/scholo classruns some farmed gold (mostly grinding mobs), some worked hard on maxing their professions.
Then after an incredible amount of politics we were strong enough to start raiding. I wouldn't call it challenging content wise. Slow dps, decurse, decurse ,decurse, remember one key moment per fight then spam your rotation (mine was frostbolt, frostbolt, frostbolt, rinse and repeat).
I won't argue with the conclusion that the wow community is a less jolly bunch now than it was back then but I can't see endgame mechanics as better back then. It used to be more about working together, keeping consistency than knowing your rotations and minmaxing. I really don't know about the current endgame. I have not sat foot in a raid since 2.4 hit. We worked hard to clear Hyjal pre nerf and I'm still recovering from that I guess.
What have destroyed a lot for me is all the currencies and points. Everything is a daily grind. I prefer to win the lottery over working.
