And who writes stuff down anymore anyways? Hello there's something called a laptop/ipad!!!
Or the human brains memory.
Really, it works. :O

Unless you have an eidentic memory, I don't believe anyone can remember 4 hours of colleges.
Ps Antistia, I've seen cool kids chain their wallets to their pants. maybe you could chain your notes to your bag? ( I'm sorry for the schadenfraude ;_; )

Memory is for the weak. I'm proud to say that I can't even remember what I had for dinner yesterday.
Now that I think about it, I can't remember what I did at work today.

I work outside, and the farm is really hilly. I was fucked before the afternoon. >.< I could hardly move at one point, I was too hot. I prefer the chilly weather, heat just screws me over.

It's nice to make notes using the good old pen and paper since after the lectures I just go home and sit by the computer for 8 hours. Also, writing stuff down with a pen makes me remember/learn it faster. Also, when studying, it feels better to read something written down on paper rather than on a screen or a printed out paper. :X

I have multiple concerns regarding the use of my iPad or laptop. Regarding the iPad: it doesn't work optimally to take notes on in my mind. I also doubt it would survive me putting my bag down without paying too much attention. Regarding the laptop: It doesn't fit in my bag, now I could take a laptop bag with me, but seriously, I have to wait for 3 hours sometimes before my next college starts. Where am I supposed to leave it? I sure as hell am not leaving it in the library nor am I going to walk around with it for 3 hours. Now, if I had a room in the city this would not be a problem.
However, the iPad is a suggestion worth considering.

fuuuu,I'm just a chaotic individual. Plus I have to get used to taking notes again >.>
And it's not like I have a bad memory in general.. I mean, for some reason I can remember that I borrowed someone 20 eurocents 4 years ago in the cafetaria of what was then my high school. Never paid me back. Bitch xD

lol.
also, on a general note, you bastards!
I'm gonna sweet talk someone into handing me their notes. If that doesn't work I can still buy them from my faculty's student's association.

Amaryl wrote:its strange really, i mean I finished two and a half years ago, and back then everyone had a laptop and a mobile phone, but nobody was using them in class. it was just not done. and yes we still Dled the Powerpoint presentations from the website or the server or whatever. and we doodled on paper and made stupid jokes and slept...
but you atleast had the semblance of caring. with all those laptops it just seems all gone..
but then i might be whining since laptops are bloody handy for a lot of things, i mean the power of google while connected to a university wi-fi... google scholar is awesome.
but its strange to see how fast some of these things are going. considering I was one of the last generations to be taught with chalkboards and them projectors. which is stuff that lasted for decades. the progress is kinda astonishing
Amy, when some of us went to school NO ONE except really rich or busy businessmen had mobile phones. I was one of the first in my school at the age of 16 and it was a huge brick with a credit card sized sim card. I also went to a really modern school that had a computer suite, it had Pentium processors and everything, this was when a Pentium Processor was absolute cutting edge.
I'm old aren't I, I was about to start typing a rant how PC gaming was better when you had to actually know how to build and repair PC's to do it....

Re: The vent thread
My first year at the uni was also the first year some students appeared with cellphones... but it were very few. Laptops were unheard of, and seen only with wealthy professors. That year also saw the rise of the MP3 players, finally delivering some competition to mini disc and disc players
Burnable CD's weren't as common as now either.
My final year at the uni, teachers would ask if there was anyone without a laptop, in which case they'd have to rent a PC room instead of a normal classroom. Everyone had a cellphone. A few people still had a separate mp3 player, most likely an iPod or some machine with enough capacity to serve as external disk drive. And who doesn't have a GPS on their car?
Yup.. those things go fast. I predict the changes to become "less visible" over time though. I doubt they'll evolve from "USB stick" to something larger like a CD again, with moving parts in it...
Laptops, smartphones, mp3 players... they sport more features with every iteration. It's likely new inventions will be another feature on those devices (or will be integrated with them) rather than yet another device being added.
So while the technology might evolve under the hood, I doubt it will be as visible as we have seen the last decade. I recall times were the only electronic device I had was a watch.

Re: The vent thread
I remember my friend in our last year at School had the very first Creative MP3 player, back when MP3 was very, very new. MiniDisc was the way to go back then, they didn't last long though.

Re: The vent thread
Integration is where we're going yes. but its also funny what with the advance in technology and the ever increasing parts. fixing your own stuff just gets more difficult for the average person. and we'll be spending more more money and time waiting on experts to get our crap fixed..
I mean I still have a blast screwing open broken wash-machines, printers, motherboards, sound systems, electrical wiring around my house. heck I even clean my silverware with the power of chemistry, by doing nothing. but how many people actually do that?
Sadly I even fixed my flatmate's 360 with the stupid oven trick >.>
and that's only going to get worse as more systems will be integrated with more advanced electronics and special patented parts and more bloated software and options and more crap that nobody actually needs or wants but we're mindless enough to get it still.
meh...
I'm not sure if I'm that much a fan of the digitalised world...
but then my little brother knows nothing else. and my lil sister will even know less about it.
maybe it also helped that the chemical lab where i got my degree was so outdated with equipment... from the 70's where you had to do all the calibrations manually and had to spend a week fixing the machines before actually being able to analyse your stuff..

And if you sneezed, you screwed up your callibration and needed to restart!
But yes... I'm not too fond of the way they are digitilizing the world, despite being a computer scientist myself. But then again, it's easy to resent change
Speaking of callibrations... I recall the days we had to callibrate the joystick

Seriously... The NMR had a bloody pencil attached to a mechanical arm powered by a rotor and a few springs... to draw the calibration lines... fuck that shit.

no, you put one of those sheets on it like this, and the black-pencil would draw your spectrum and the red your calibration line...
So you had to actually count cubes to figure out at what wavelenghts and with what intensity the peaks were >.>

Real chemists integrate by cutting out their curves and weighing them :3
