Foreigners love it. But I just get constant abuse and insults from people, and I'm damn sick of it.

Re: The vent thread
I can't find like 90% of my fucking notes anymore. FOR FUCK SAKE. I have no idea where those fucking things are god damn it. Not on my desk, not in my room, not in the rest of my home. Not even in my father's fucking office according to an employee. That either leaves uni (good luck getting it back from there..), or at the cinema (You're probably asking yourself why: I have lectures at the cinema.)
I fucking hate this crap, always happens to me.

Re: The vent thread
Actually I've had lectures at the cinema once too and I hated it. The teacher should either be level or higher, looking down on him/her is horrible. Also, there's no proper surface to make any notes, you have to either clumsily press it against the back of the soft chair in front of you or awkwardly use your knees as a surface.
So, paradoxially, the comfortableness of the chair makes them uncomfortable during a lecture

Most 'aulas' (as we call them here) in universities are built with the professor being down and the students going up. I guess it's the concept of a greek theatre. You can talk to 1k + students without having to shout and you can perfectly see all of your students.

Cultural preference I suppose. I prefer the German style with the professor higher platform.

Same here, but these days the teachers can't actually see the students since they're all hiding behind their laptops playing games.
or if you can see the students they're playing angry birds under the desks.
and they'll DL the presentation from the website.

Re: The vent thread
Nah it's not really cultural preference. It's more the only way for housing bigger classes.
Aulas are built for housing hundreds of students at one time. And they're from my experience the only way to properly 'contain' and 'control' hundreds of students.
Even in our small classes, students sit in layers. The teachers sees every student and the student has no hinderance in his sight either. But I can see your German style working magnificently here too ^^ Just not for big classes D:
Ps: Ow god yes, the laptops. They're po(o)pping up everywhere now. tbh i find internet to be a trend like democracy and the end of seperation of the classes, it'll blow over

Re: The vent thread
Ah...Yeah most of our mass-lectures are in layered rooms, too. I've had a few courses in big aulas, and I didn't like it much. Perhaps I just dont like massive lectures in general. I prefer a more personal, smaller groups. The larger the group the more students are just messing around and not paying any attention.

Re: The vent thread
Most of our professors deal with those 'troublemakers' and 'talkers' by constantly asking them questions and then insulting them if they don't know it. x)
E.g.: A kid after not knowing the answer: 'I guess you're here for the free heating? Want my sandwiches or will you be able to survive for another day poor chap?' or: 'Our rules say that we can't punish a student for talking in the classroom.. but I've never been fond of rules. Your name miss?'
I swear you only once make the mistake of talking. Having litterally 500 students laugh at you really helps you contain yourself xD

Re: The vent thread
its strange really, i mean I finished two and a half years ago, and back then everyone had a laptop and a mobile phone, but nobody was using them in class. it was just not done. and yes we still Dled the Powerpoint presentations from the website or the server or whatever. and we doodled on paper and made stupid jokes and slept...
but you atleast had the semblance of caring. with all those laptops it just seems all gone..
but then i might be whining since laptops are bloody handy for a lot of things, i mean the power of google while connected to a university wi-fi... google scholar is awesome.
but its strange to see how fast some of these things are going. considering I was one of the last generations to be taught with chalkboards and them projectors. which is stuff that lasted for decades. the progress is kinda astonishing

On the one hand, yes, on the other hand:
also, there's no proper surface to make any notes, you have to either clumsily press it against the back of the soft chair in front of you or awkwardly use your knees as a surface.
This.

Quite a few people use laptops here too. It's just not practical for me though. I have to travel for 20 minutes, and my bag is usually filled to the brim. That means I would have to have a laptop bag with me too. Which is totally practical when you've got to wait for 3 hours before college starts again >.>. So yeah, I'm stuck with my little exercise books I had left over from high school. But now I've lost the most important one, I think it's in the cinema so that's a goner.

Thanks and fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. I am organized, I just seem to have left it there, the system can be improved upon... I need a room in the city and a small laptop for this to work!
