Editing Pictures
We all know how it is. People need pictures they find edited and so on. I didn't see where I can ask for such, so I made a topic about it.
Who here is willing to create, or teach me how to make, the hair of the man in these drawings black without making it look unnatural?
Thank you beforehand.

Pwoosh, might be tough.. Not something I've ever attempted. There's a bunch of talented photoshoopers on this forum though, if none of them pop up to help you I guess I'll take a crack at it in a few days...

I've been trying several approaches myself, but it always looks unnatural. Hence I ask.

Re: Editing Pictures
I have one question though. Have you asked the artists, where you get these pictures from, if you can alter their work beforehand for non commercial purposes?
You can use the colour overlay tool or lasso the area, put it in a new layer and change it to black and white, then just add black over it and have the opacity changed so its not so black.

If its published on the web without a copy right, all is cool.

Re: Editing Pictures
Oh not to worry, all credit goes to the creators and I intend only to use it in private purposes. I don't intend to do much with 'em, mainly testing my own Photoshop skills.
But yes, I could ask 'em.

That isn't really what Wulf is getting at. Taking their work and using it to represent a character without asking them, to be honest that's probably fine. It's not being published anywhere or anything of the sort.
Editing their work though, well, I'd say it's just common courtesy to contact the artist and inform them of your plans and see what they say. Nine times out of ten they'll be fine with it anyway, but it's just nice to be asked.

By law a work is copyright the moment it is created, so every piece of work is copyrighted unless stated otherwise! I know artists who've had their characters taken and re-coloured and posted on other websites and it gets them quite upset. aslong as their website is on the image you edit to link to the original I think then all is fine.
Re: Editing Pictures
Then again, personally I'd be flattered if my piece of art was so liked. No matter, I stated that I won't use them except for my own personal use and testing my own photoshop skills.
I've gotten help and ideas in how to do so. Thank you!

Re: Editing Pictures
In all honesty with those two, you'd need someone decent at digital painting to redo them a fair bit if you wanted a really nice result- take the first on, you'd have the orangey light from the fire, and the greenish light from the window creating highlights on the hair. In the second, the pale teal/blue from the lighting.
But yes, as Wulf said- the moment an artist makes a piece- the copyright belongs to them, it isn't something you have to apply for in any form. It'd be nice if people started crediting the artists when they find pictures to represent their characters, as for a few of these, character portrait commissions will make up a chunk of their income.

Re: Editing Pictures
The second one is pretty easy, unlike the first one because of the lighting and the shades in the hair. Might give it a try later on at some point.
