True that! My pre-order's in shape, and I'm waiting for my beta access... I think I've to say good bye to the people I knew in life.Arathoran wrote:The Legacy of Dawn have already planed out a guild! We'll be dropping down like payload!

Well, my biggest problem with SWTOR is that they are just lacking in Gameplay innovation.
No, adding coverbased shooting into an MMO is not innovating MMO combat if everything else is basicly the same.
And yes, the conversation wheel is better than no conversation wheel. Still, I play MMOs for the people, not the NPCs. I heard something that there might be NPCs you can have romances with. My only reaction to that is "with NPCs... in an MMO?"
They also remove the grindy bits by giving you a free bot to do it for you. (Proffessions) Kinda... lame xD
And, of course, my absolutely biggest beef with the game is that it is in the wrong fucking era of Star Wars where the common soldier is as good/strong a tactical weapon as a Jedi. *Longs for the days when the Extended Star Wars universe was awesome and fantastic since nothing pree Episode 4 existed*

For me, personally, the mechanics don't matter that much, as that's not the reason I play MMOs. <.< I mean, I played SWG for 8 years... worst mechanics ever. >.>
Innovation isn't always necessary. Remember, WoW wasn't innovative either--Blizzard are known for their heavy copycatting, afterall. It was, like TOR, a game that took previous systems and tweaked them to their idea of perfection. A good chunk of WoW's mechanics came from EverQuest, and much of its lore is heavily and obviously inspired by other fictional (and non-fictional) universes.
Then you have very innovative games, like SWG, or Pirates of the Burning Sea, that fall flat on their face.
And anyway, TOR is being innovative, just not in combat mechanics. Which isn't a problem for me, as combat mechanics is the last thing I care about when deciding on playing an MMO.
And yes, the conversation wheel is better than no conversation wheel. Still, I play MMOs for the people, not the NPCs. I heard something that there might be NPCs you can have romances with. My only reaction to that is "with NPCs... in an MMO?"
I want an RPG out of my MMO. TOR is doing that. No other MMO has. The people are great, but the game itself should be fun too... and despite the advancements WoW has made in its questing system, it is still incredibly boring and uninspiring to play through.
WoW (and pretty much all MMOs) is an action-adventure, TOR will be a proper RPG. That makes it superior in every way, IMO. I don't want to have to have player characters around (and having to -hope- they're quality RPers) to get any interesting story for my character... I want to be able to get character development out of the game itself, even if I'm all by myself.
They also remove the grindy bits by giving you a free bot to do it for you. (Proffessions) Kinda... lame xD
Grinding is bad. I would much rather send some minions out to collect things for me instead of manually flying around and doing it myself. Hell, that's what I do in WoW now anyways--buy herbs/minerals off the AH that other people gathered. The only difference between the two is that I'm paying for the service in WoW, and get it instantaneously, whereas you don't pay for it in SWTOR, but it takes time to gather.
As far as crafting the actual item goes.... yeah, you mill 500-1000 herbs in one sitting, multiple times a week, and then try to continue thinking botting would be lame. <.<
The most interesting part of professions isn't the hand crafting of the item (in which WoW is already extremely simplified compared to, say, SWG), it's actually finding out what items are worth more to the most people and playing the market to get those items sold for the best profit.
This I agree with. Partially, at least, as I'd rather we just not have Jedi at all, instead of worrying about how they compare with the 'common soldier', as Jedi are boring as fuck. But yeah. GCW era > all. Sadly, RPers ruin it in games set in those universes, too. Anyone who played SWG can attest that there were far more Jedi and Mandalorians than anything else, despite the fact that both are supposed to be practically extinct at that point in time. At least in the TOR era, the huge numbers of them will actually make sense.

Re: Anybody else in here looking to try SW TOR when it hits?
You make some valid points. And I know that WoW wasn't innovative. It's just that I am extreamly bored of that playstyle (hotkey based MMO standard).
That today most MMOs have.
I am bored with how those games work, my biggest beef with the game mechanics. TOR is doing far from enough to mix things up for me personally.
I'm just tired of targeting a mob and pressing my skills. At times having to move out of shit. Needing a tank and a healer for any challanging group content.
And PvP having a gear level entry before a skill level entry.
And, I agree with the whole RPG bit, that is the main reason I'm looking so much at GW2 since they seem to be doing so much more than TOR about the RPG bit.
No classical "exclamation marks" quests. They happen, you see them happen. If you don't stop it, or anyone else doesn't stop it, things change. As I see it they have the better conversations TOR has. But not locked into "go all on one since going in between is generally not as good for optimization". A "personal story" that gets updated and is different depending on choises you do. Both at char creation and in game.
Ad to that a combat system that isn't like 90% of the MMO"RPG"s on the market.

I must admit, I'd love to see more FPS-style MMOs. That would be my ideal system, since it actually focuses on the player's own involvement. But I don't think server connections can support a true FPS-style game yet... all the times it's been tried it's failed. Then again, that might just be because all the attempts were by SOE, who suck at making MMOs these days.

From what I read, I wouldn't say so much more. Definitely has some interesting bits, yes, but not going to compare without hands on experience with both systems.

That's what TOR does as well.
GWII does look interesting on the RPG front, though, so I'll have to try it.

That's not true, but most attempts are by Indie developpers who tend to fall on their arses

I will wait and see how the RP community goes.
And how much the sub is. I'm not exactly rich >.< that's why GW2 appeals.

I didn't read through this entire post so i don't know if anyone already said it. However I might aswell mention that there is a forum for SW:TOR roleplayers that is rather active and building up a strong community, aiming to pick the same servers to play on etc. There are already guilds recruiting and forum and chatbox RP going on and as far as I know it's been around for quite a few months.
So check out http://swtor-rp.com/ if that's interesting to you!

Now when you say FPS you're probably actually talking about FPS games - I hate derp sentences like this but bear with me! - but I've played one hundred a side Mount and Blade battles and the first person melee/archery combat in that is the most engaging and skill based in any game I've ever played. Everything is parryable, blockable, dodgable, or in some way counterable. If you're hit it's your own fault, not to mention one hit has the potential to kill you.
True that was only two hundred players but there was no lag at all on player supported servers. I can only guess but I'd hope that 'Blizzard style' - you can probably tell I know nothing about hardware - servers would be able to host the required several thousand players.

I'll prolly try Jedi knight. As I am going Empire (if I buy the game when it's released that is), I wouldnt want to spoil it all for myself. There will be all sorts of buggs, prolly, but I don't mind at all.

I'll roll a Jedi Knight in both the beta and the release, though if I get that far, I'll try a Guardian now and a Sentinel in the actual release. Spoilers have never been much of an issue for me, and the most worrying thing in the beta for me is if their servers can hold up with the amount of people they've invited, and with all the codes handed out.

Today I realised why I dislike the chosen aestetic. It looks like that animated Star Wars movie I pretend doesn't exist which if it does exist looks horrible.

Both me and a friend who downloaded the Beta felt that the gameplay was very "meh". No thrill at all at the start (And he's been wanting the game to be good. I've not expected anything).
Really sad that it feels like that this late in development.

Re: Anybody else in here looking to try SW TOR when it hits?
With graphics looking like in the above vid, and gameplay being all too much MMOy and WoWy (= bad), I'm really disappointed I'm Bioware for not innovating more and trying to push the genre further, as was always included in the talks about TOR. From watching several videos with high quality and word of mouth from friends in the beta, the conclusion has been that the graphics are worse than WoW itself, something fairly ridiculous when TOR comes out in the end of 2011. :/
That said, it does come out the 20/12 which is around the weeks I enter supreme gaming mode and have to have something to sink my time into. That, coupled with the fact that almost all of my online friends are going to play this, sort of forces me to at least try it out for the free month. Although I could change my opinion once I've tried the game myself, I doubt that'll happen, and it's a bit sad knowing that the game will get loads of copies sold because bioware fanboys will pay 50 $ for a game where you can have sex with NPCs.
Oh, and it may have already been mentioned, but will there be RP-PvP servers? I can't pick RP over PvP in a game like this so I'd love it if I wouldn't have to make that choice.
