We have six watercannons in Northern Ireland. However, it's marching season over there so we couldn't risk redeploying them to the mainland even if we wanted to.

As Grufftoof says, they're useless against the sort of looting we're seeing now. The police will sort it out given time. Momentum was gained through social networking, it will take a while for that to be reversed.

Riot control's not an easy job, you've got to balance your own aggression with what's appropriate. You're shitting yourself and being hit from all directions but you've got to restrain yourself from lashing out. I've never been in a real situation, but training for it was the most terrifying thing I've ever done. All it takes is for one guy to lose it and an entire gang of scrawny little drug puppies end up in A&E.

That's a load of crap and you know it. Me and Tarv have been stopped by the police before which proves quite concisely how little 'racial profiling' goes on behind the scenes. Economic issues caused and then made worse by the very people who are now looting to their hearts content. All this was boiling up ready to explode because society's trash wasn't being paid enough to sit on their arses watching Sky Sports, smoking, drinking, and having kids at my expense. We can get manual labour from Eastern Europe, society's trash no longer serves a purpose and if it wasn't for the fact we have a duty of care for the mentally incapable I'd propose deportation to the Outher Hebrides.

They are rioting for one reason, greed.

I remember seeing a riot once in Ghent. Water cannon and all. Riot police is one of the most scaryily efficient police forces I've seen o_o

They made a wall, advanced, opened up the wall, grabbed a few behind the wall. Tied them with plastic cuffs. Put them on large 100 passager busses and drove them off. It was at night and there was really nothing the riot could do against two water cannons packed with flashlights that blinded everything and kept everything contained with the hoses. There were so many lights shining on that riot and they were all just getting picked off, one by one.

Yes Nithel, but from what I hear and read.. the people rarely amass sufficiently for such tactic to be efficient. Unless you can deploy such a tank on every corner.

Some protest I can understand, but the endangering of people's lives is something I have little to no tolerance for. I won't be shedding a tear for these looters, no matter their story, no matter the repercussions they'll receive.

Ow I'm not saying that approach is good for this kind of thing; just being nostalgic. this is comparable with the riots in the banlieu's in Paris a couple of years ago. Impossible to be everywhere. Completetly something different from facing a couple of thousand of people standing in front of you.

Yeah, same here. Mindless violence is just a bad kick in the stomache :/ There's definitely problems in this social caste of society that need to get looked into. But this is not the way and should never be the way.

I have family members in the police and they have explained how they are trained.

Come now Feyd, both sides had their part in this, but it's a load of hubris to say that select videos prove widescale police brutality whilst there's a legion of chavs looting in almost all major cities. I doubt that the majority is out there at the wrong time and the wrong place, let alone think which of them plead they don't have anything to do with it when they get caught.

You folks clearly jump far too fast on attacking a view I don't hold, and points I never made.
What I have been saying is that there are other factors and causes which have led to these riots, rather than the view that these riots were arbitrary. Yes, many of the rioters joined in because they saw others were doing it, getting away with it, so they joined in aswell. Infact, let's stop saying rioters, they aren't even rioters, merely looters. Many joined in for materialistic greed, and for getting a kick out of it. But this is not the full reason. People must look at all the causes for the hate and anger displayed, rather than dismissing it as pure mayhem, brushing it under the bed, and expecting it to not happen again. That type of view will only bring it about again, in cyclical nature. I just wish to get the full picture.

Now that's -just- an short employment snapshot. But it does make you think. One soundbyte I heard in one of the videos (from some god awful london woman) "We're just taking our taxes back innit".

I just disapprove of people who like to " Stick it to the man. " The United Kingdom is overall a very nice place to live: Compared to other areas in the world, and although we have our problems, I do believe we live in one of the most accepting societies.
