Are you terribly sure about that? I don't wish to over-dramatize this, but 'smacked around the head and arrested' isn't exactly bringing back the homes, shops and jobs to those people whose buildings are razed and looted.

The british mentality it the moment is to soft and this is the exact reason why we have thugs, rioting in cities who had no relation to the original cataclyst for the -protest-. The family of the victim, aren't condoneing whats going on, they want nothing to do with it. These are simply bastards who have a misplaced sense of superiority and hunger for a false and empty cause, they rebeling for the sake of rebellion. Equality is the best it's ever been in this country, and -far- better then conditions found in other areas of the world. They need to be arrested and charged, simple as.

No. The escalation would be a problem. It isn't about "saving face". It's about realising that there are actions that should be taken without resorting to emotional, knee-jerk responses.

The "riots" (call them "lootings" or something else, cos they are not riots in any truly singly motivated way - like the Poll Tax Riots for example) are really testing my otherwise very liberal beliefs.

But then I remind myself that it's important to realise that just because you think there is a cause for all this, you're not justifying the actions.

Justification and cause are two very separate things. Something a lot of the politicos are forgetting...

And I don't want gangs of people taking the Law into their own hands as vigilantes. Nor do I want the escalation of conflict to levels we wouldn't have seen in many, many years in the UK.

Arrest, charge and deal with under law. The full force of the law. Yes. Absolutely.

Then start looking at everything that is shit in so many sections of society in the UK. Less "us and them" or "they trash 'their' neighbourhoods". This is our society as a whole.

I'm a very liberal person, I believe in equality for all sexualities, races, beliefs and the right to speak your mind. I however, do think. That these chavs.. just need to be charged.. and sorted out, were being to soft. No wonder people are takeing the law into their own hands.

The issue with hoping that 'TEH LAW' will do the right thing is that it is yet to do so and there are less and less people trusting the government to keep their friends, relatives and property safe.
It's also a bit of a gamble whether to deploy countermeasures that are apparently giving the message that the government has run out of solutions to keep order up and resorts to North-Irish means, while not changing tactics may just escalate the mayhem.

So to be liberal means to let people do whatever the heck they want? I agree with you on the vigilante thing, the police should be doing the policing and nobody else.

What I can tell from the news though, the police don't seem to be doing that much to help. They definitely should be more proactive and maybe water cannons or whatever aren't a long-term solution at least it'll put an end to the immediate one.

And as a latter note to the water cannon thing, water cannons are used for pushing back or dispersing large numbers of people.

This is small (10 or so) groups of people at a time in areas looting and hitting specifics places. A water cannon would be fuck all use.

Police on the streets, riot geared or no, is a bloody great step. Cutting police numbers... is less a good step. Maybe some cunt somewhere will realise that the "cuts that need to be made" shouldn't "need to be made" within the thin blue line...
