Idea for a new event Empty Idea for a new event

Post by Arador Tue Jun 15, 2010 3:16 pm

I was thinking about a new event, one to shock the very foundations of the local bakery.

I've been into the Total War games lately and have gone to love the tactics behind it. But I especially like the idea of fielding big and organised armies, and the whole structure of it.

So it got me thinking, could we get something like that in WoW? Well it should be obvious that one guild cannot do it. (Unless one guild has 50 people avaible for it). So, what if we all (Alliance, Sorry Hordies, make your own damn event!) got together and forged a huge Alliance army?

Now for the sake of all the different guilds and goals everyone's got, I'd suggest that people would just 'trade in' their character for 'Random soldier/knight/archer' for the event.

If it should come to be, we'd go practise some warfare tactics that may not be of much use in-game, but it'd be fun and intresting nonetheless.

Now, what we'll need are:
Soldier regiment (regular soldiers with weapons and shields (or not))
Spear/pike regiment (soldiers with polearms)
Archer regiment (Soldiers with bows/rifles)
Light cavalry (soldiers on unarmoured horses wielding bows/spears or just weapons)
Knights (Armoured soldiers on armoured horses wielding lances and shields)

Every regiment will have a commander or sergeant and there will be one overall commander. (which would most likely be myself, though not as Elegost, but also some random Alliance commander).

We'll see how far we get, please reply if you're intrested and show me some love for once.

All I can say is...

RTS that way ---->

Making players march in straight lines just DOES. NOT. WORK. It's been proven 1000 times over to be beyond execution in WoW.

But, I'd be very happy if you prove me wrong.

Imagine you are the simple soldier on the front line!
Stay silent, stand in line, Do not emote to much or you are spamming, Follow the commanders direction, and.. pretty much do stuff when told to. Oh, the joy of RP is clearly present in those things!

I wouldn't mind being a simple soldier on an alt or something. Just to get the feeling of what it must have been like. All games play you as the hero and honestly I could use the break from RL (lol Wink).

But perhaps we could focus on wow tactics first? I know PvP is a rich world but the latest world pvp events I joined showed a lack of tactical knowledge and training. IE: there's so much AoE that traditional infantry formations are probably a terrible idea. On the other hand there are healers.
IMO it would have more merit if we focus on large scale pvp warfare.

So, you say PvP? Take a look at Wintergrasp.

Now take a look at this.

Any questions?

i wish you good luck Ara.

just remember, this has been tried and would require VERY strict rules to pull off.

Lets not jump to conclusions and then disregard the event before it even happens, I am up for helping, Arador! Just poke me ingame.

I`d say we help out, do our part, then comment if it goes bad or good. -nod-

Arador, I think your idea is awesome. It really do have merit and it'd be awesome if you pulled it off. Been thinking about a lot over the years myself (as a hypothetical idea rather than something I want to do though).

But as you said, beyond looking awesome on parade it is rather useless ingame, besides the discipline. You cannot form the inpenetrable spear/pike/polearm regiments that make those weapons strong (not do they handle the manner they should). You cannot pull off the volleys that archers rely on. You cannot do a mounted charge which makes cavalry unstoppable.

Of course this should not be a deterrent if you want to do it specifically for parades and fun. But I was thinking, what do you think of setting it up like a modern army instead?

Instead of tight formations of 100-150 men you focus on the small mobile 5 man groups of today. Each group being 1-3 specialists and the rest mainstay. Each group led by a sergeant. Every two groups (10 souls) by a lieutenant. Every 40 by a captain? Some groups being entirely specialists (rogue hit-squads, hq).

Focus on getting each group disciplined and capable of working with others. Not only would it be awesome to pull off, I'd think it could be used rather effectively in wpvp too. Not just for fun/looks.

That said, whatever you decide. I'd be willing to offer what support I can.

it does work Gahalla ;D those small groups, alone or organised into moving party's that achieve seperate objectives are very handy in w-pvp. but combined, a large mass of smaller cells expertly balanced ... is a deadly force indeed, especially with training.

War games with training that benefits W-pvp, a good balance of heirarchy, team-work and a good rotation of tactics and terrain makes for a deadly force indeed, and would be excellent for the alliance.

i think at the moment the horde use the sort of tactics a Mongol 'Tuman' would use...

Though your also right about mechanics, sadly WoW doesnt allow for the possibility of physically breaking down walls of men with cavalry, or making a wall of spears. but that doesnt mean you cant make battle lines to block a way, while a group of mounted players ride around your foe's as they charge your line.

its all a case of using your imagination! works for me.

If you come out of you ignorance bunker of negativity for a second you'd see that plenty of guilds do this with their members, as anyone who came to the military parade in Ironforge found out.
