So my headless horsemen project is coming along nicely, still incredibly sketchy, but I feel like I'm making some progress!


25 minutes or so in illustrator with a graphic tablet.

Right... perhaps I dare sharing some of my work too, though in my own eyes I still see so much wrong with all my drawings, but I guess everyone has that problem. xD I still draw oldstyle on paper with my pencil, though I am thinking about maybe getting a tablet, but I don't know anything about photoshop, so... I don't know yet!

Haha indeed, anyone can judge something At least I know very well what my weak points are and what I need to work on more often, but sometimes I'm so lazy... :3 Thanks for the comments though! And Erwt, perhaps I will, though the problem with these I do on paper is that I can't scan them in, I always draw on A3 paper (Yay for bigness) and my scanner only likes to eat A4... But, who knows, perhaps once and if I do get a tablet.. xD

Oh, that's good! I think the most common "problem" I keep seeing among first year art students is that they draw so small! Bigger = better.

Perhaps you have a friend somewhere with a better camera you can ask to take pictures? It seems every other person has one of them fancy digital cameras these days. Light it properly and you could get a picture that's just as good as a scan.

And you can "finish" a drawing without a tablet. Before I had one I usually used ink and waterclolors.
Markers can be a lot of fun, too.

This isn't a thread for a debate, but I have to say that another artist can give tips on how to better things and what to use to do so, but an artist's opinion on anatomy is no greater than someone elses. We see human bodies everyday, your sub-concious kicks in instantly if something is out of place, hence why in real life if someone has a lack of fingers, a wonky eye and even things like flared nostrils or a big nose, you notice it very quickly. This is just because we're human! The same applies for a drawing of a humanoid too. An artist may notice it more quickly because they're used to looking out for it. Your opinion on a foot looking out of place is no greater than someone who doesn't do art.

Yes it is. Someone who works with creating visuals on a daily and professional basis knows their anatomy better, and are better at visually analyzing a piece and breaking it down in a meaningful way. Everyone can tell when a picture is ugly, a good artist can tell you why it's ugly.

Just like a plumber can tell my why my hot water stopped running. They're plumbers, they're educated in pipes.

I disagree to the fullest extent. Comparing an artist to a plumber is a bit off, I'd compare a biologist to a plumber - they can tell me why my fingers have gone numb. I see fingers and know the general jist of how they work, but I wouldn't know the ins and outs like a plumber does with pipe. Something that is visual is available to all, just an artist may notice it quicker. Film and TV work the same, though we can hide it better because it is a moving image

EDIT: Also, as someone who also works in something where "deeper meaning" can be drawn from it, I've learnt that anyone and I mean anyone can create a meaning from a visual, you could be a call centre employee who watches Eastenders and have a greater emotional response / create deeper meaning from a piece of art than an artist. If you create a piece of art/film/TV/drama that can only be understood by those with a professional interest in the field, then (unless you're meaning to educate) you've done a bad job!

Artists notice weakness in work far more then anyone else would, this applies to human anatomy, simply because we train our eyes to notice such things more frequently and more accurately, it's how you -learn- to draw it isn't.. ' all in the hands '.

Although, I do see your point, there's a difference between what a child(Who hasn't drawn for more then two years.) would see then what a proffesional, venerable Illustrator would see. It's why we dread looking back at old drawings, it would've looked fine back then, but as you progress, you notice weakness more.

It's a curse, really. I can't enjoy videogames like I used to, I instinctively nitpick and break them apart. To a lesser extend I do that with movies, comic books, paintings, music...

It's a part of being a professional in a creative field. There's a difference between being a designer and an artist as well. A designer tends to create creative property to fill a certain need, a specific purpose, and thus has to adhere to certain rules to fill that need, where as the only purpose of art is to simply exist an preferably to be found pleasant.

Oh no, I do agree with that. There is different degrees of how much one would notice, though I imagine taking two people and asking them to spot the problem with a painting, an artist would find it first and the other person would eventually get it. When a non-artist can't notice something without being told it is wrong, is when art is successful IMO. Though, with all of this modern art crap (Picasso included - I hate that guy) with the silly shapes and stuff like "the unmade bed", I think I'd notice much less in actual art just because of all the shite you see lately.

See, I'm highly greatful I don't get this. I have two frames of mind when it comes to TV and Film. If I'm told to analyse it or I'm attempting to, I can dissect it but if I'm going in with a relaxed state of mind and I'm watching something to be entertained, I may know the occassional cool/off shot or continuity error, but for the most part I can shut off that side of me and just enjoy it. I know where you're coming from though, I have friends on my course who pretty much stopped watching TV for pleasure because they can't stop being analytical. I can't help but do it with documentaries, especially interviews.
