Well, in Asia where skin is usually a bit darker, they try to make themselves more pale as over there, that is considered beauty. In places like Europe and America, where we already have 'pale' skin, darker/tanned skin is considered beautiful so many try to obtain that.

Originally it was because having the different skin colours was very strange and unique, however these days its more so because 'datz wat da modelz do'.

most models (at least fashion models, cant speak for the rest) are very pale, other than that you're right.
