Something that's been pissing me off extremely lately.

People who say their favourite genres of music are:

Thing is, Amon Amarth is exactly that. Melodeath with lyrics about vikings. Lyrics alone don't define a genre.
I'm no expert in viking metal, but I'd say this resembles a lot more black metal than it does melodeath.

Bathory and Enslaved are perhaps the only black metal bands you could also describe as viking metal, the only ones. Even then, their viking metal albums sound very little like their black metal albums.

The only thing that connects most other bands labelled 'viking metal' with black metal is the fact that they're playing metal.

That's because most people are willing to call anything with vikings as the lyrical theme viking metal. And that's what most "viking metal" bands do. If there is a real viking metal genre its origins come from black metal. Real viking metal bands just seem to be very rare.

Pirate metal is even more gimmicky since it really is just power metal with pirate lyrics.

Anyhow, I feel this video is extremely related to the topic.

I don't think such a thing as viking metal exists at all, but I definitely do not think what could be described as 'viking metal' is black metal. They may be related (due to Bathory), but sonically and ideologically they don't have much in common.

Alot of the metal sub-genres seem gimmicky to me.

I don't really listen to black anymore(and I never did extensively anyway, so I probably liked the fanboy stuff Razz

) but I can see why people like SOME of it, I can listen to some of it and enjoy it somewhat, follow the song and such but others I just can't get a grip of and it just seems like people are liking it cos it's extreme. On one of the vids Corleth linked the top comment is:

delicate and delight disarmony, chaos through calm water, monotony for the pig ears, shivers for the deep souls. that's true art, that's darkness. Hail.

Sorry but bellend xD. It's one of the few genres that I will have no problem seriously calling bad music and not just something I don't like.

This I was able to listen to and could enjoy(though I'd never admit it IRL):

Weakling - The Entire Fucking Battlefield however I could not really listen to. Haven't got through all the ones you linked yet Corleth.

Well, yes. Bathory pioneered both genres so it's obvious they share the roots. However since they share just the roots they've had plenty time to branch off into different directions. But yeah...not so sure about viking metal being a real thing these days.

I prefer black metal to other genres of metal for numerous reasons, really.

It's atmospherics and the wall-of-sound, its one of the few metal genres that emphasises atmosphere over musicianship, technicality, 'heaviness'.
It's lo-finess, this is partly what gives it such a good atmosphere, but also something I love in other forms of music (indie, folk, punk) that isn't really found in metal.
It's progressiveness (in recent years), its really one of the few metal genres I can say has 'evolved' artistically since the 90's.
And the fact its one of the few metal genres that I can listen to alone, in my room and ponder shit without wanting to smash up the room.

But yeah, you love it or you hate it. Especially when taking into account all the goings on behind the scenes of the Norwegian scene and some of the bands ideologies.
