The joy and the suffering of it, yes. In the right, rational and compassionate hands it is fantastic to discuss the mysteries of the universe, but in the hands of those with less pure intentions it often becomes a pissing contest and a poo-flinging trollfest. Sadly on the internet the latter is almost always the case, though I am very glad to see is not the case in this thread. It speaks wonders about this community that this thread hasn't derailed in ugly namecalling and mockery yet.

Maybe I should have quoted the part of Gen's post I was referring toThelos wrote:I'm not sure what you mean Mandui. We weren't really talking about proof for anything. In fact I was making a meta-comment about the nature of the discussion without saying anything ontological about the excistence or non-excistence of any gods. My entire point was that said discussion would be a meaningless back-and-forth between the Theists and Atheists, since one cannot properly explain that is known trough Revelation trough any other means.
Indeed, it is quite obvious to some, and not at all obvious to others, which makes it such a tricky debate, since both sides appear completely alien to the other.
And yes. Weird to see terms like 'proof' or 'evidence' become this subjective.

Fair enough. Those guys are jerks and very unfit for the modern age. Live and let live, as sir McCartney would say. My motivation to react in this thread though was to represent the other side in a meaningful way, meaning I wouldn't want people to get the impression that all religious people are zealots like that, and also, to warn you that just because you might get bullied by something does not mean you should let yourself become the bully if the tables one day might turn. There's assholes everywhere of any shape and color.

Of course, not all religious fanatics are like that, but it's almost like that the fanatics that I keep meeting on the streets are like. A few years ago when I was still smoking, I just laughed in their face when they claimed that I was a evil person (It was the years of my teenage angst) and they yelled "You love your smokes more than you love God!" and that just made me laugh more. My point is, that people seem to get the wrong idea when I posted on the Vent thread about religious people. For the fourth time, I don't have any trouble with people following a religion, it's the fanatics that pisses me off.

yeh i can semmy annswer that.. at university I was unfortunate enough to have been fooled into attending one of these so calles preaches at uni by my flatmate..
had some nut job going around.. couldnt help myself I challanged why "god" would allow the devil to create suffering in the poorer parts of the world, why god would instill upon a select few of his children diissabilities that make there lives a living hell for various reasons... his answer it was punishment for the wrong doings of other people!
I turned round and directly asked so i have dyslexia and ADHD cos of some drug barron in columbia he said yes

so basicaly to that logic.. you can be as bad as you want But god will create an extra child in africa to starve for every sin o.O

Re: Religion
Heaven and hell are such odd concepts coming from a Christian towards an Atheist. It's like telling a (skinny) guy what kind of bra he should wear.
Also, for me, Heaven itself is a strange concept, since if it's a place without any suffering, anyone going in either has to incredibly narcistic, only caring about himself, or is in a way lobotomized so they don't remember/feel any bad things. An extreme - "Only you got into heaven, all the others you love are now in hell and will burn for all eternity""Oh joy!".

Tbh, if I went to Heaven.. Fuck me, I'd be bored. What can you do there, sit on a cloud and do utterly nothing? Fuck that, Valhalla for me.

Of all the things you can say against Heaven, that has got to be the silliest. What part of "Eternal bliss" can you possibly misunderstand? Boredom isn't part of perfect happiness, you know, it cant possibly be if it could be a reason for you not to want to have it.
Not that I personally believe in an afterlife though. At least, not in the Heaven&Hell sense nor in any Reïncarnation sense. I've always found the idea that the atoms of which I consist would break down and form different entities as the atoms of which I excisted in turn came together to form the current me a very romantic and soothing notion.

Re: Religion
Heaven is actually one of the reasons I don't talk to my mother about religion. Given my understanding of the Christian Heaven it simply cannot exist. If Yahweh does exist as is described in scripture then I'm going to Hell. If I'm in Hell then my mother cannot be reunited with me in heaven which would, I hope, spoil heaven for her. If it's spoilt and imperfect does it still count as heaven?
Further, if Lucifer could fall, what chance do the rest of us have even if we are allowed past the Pearly Gates. If there is even the slightest chance that an angel can fall, then we must also be susceptible, and if there is even the slightest chance then eternity is long enough that it is certain to happen.
