In response to this thread: http://www.defiasrp.com/t3837-the-game I wonder some things.
First, how would you define nerdyness. To someone board games are far more nerdy than roleplaying. Etc
Now, to the main points.
How is it possible to know your fav colour? Seriously. No colour is always best, colours fit differendly depending on where and when.
How can you bluntly just surefire say a fav book and movie. And the bi question, is that same fav the best you've ever seen? I have trouble keeping a top 5 that's sort of constant I'd never be able to say an absolute one.
It just baffles me.

I wouldn't be surprised if they conclude Light is "slowed" by its duality. I'm far from qualified to form an opinion on the matter though
Re: Tzeentch's Thread of Everchanging Topics
As exciting as the notion that this discovery might overturn 70 years of physics is, it's a good thing to keep in mind that the past 70 years of physics have worked quite well for all practical purposes they have been applied to.

Well yes... I also wonder about the relevance of such discoveries at times, but.... to discover and understand is the first step to build an application that might be useful. But I'm quite sceptic on the value of new elementary physics. While the scientists speak as if they are unraveling the mysteries of the world and the fundaments of matter... I'm beginning to doubt the usability of it.
As elementary physics dig deeper, it feels as if its value is becoming more and more restricted to academic values and less so in application. There are but two exceptions to this, I think. One would be the discovery of a new source of power. The other would be the ability to use such properties in communication and computation.

- Find particle that causes gravity.
- ???
- Replicate in space.
- Acquire artificial gravity.

Imagine they discover it. Do you believe replication is possible?
Furthermore, that this is possible at an affordable cost of energy and usable rate?

Given enough time (and we don't blow ourselves up), I wouldn't be surprised if they discover it and replicate it.Jeanpierre wrote:Imagine they discover it. Do you believe replication is possible?
Again, given enough time, I wouldn't discount the possibility.Furthermore, that this is possible at an affordable cost of energy and usable rate?
Anything is possible, that's why students could now be failing exams over facts that are proven wrong in a year.
It might also be possible that the neutrino thing doesn't dissprove Einsteins relativy and can be used to explain other things. Not that I know that much about physics ofcourse :3

Re: Tzeentch's Thread of Everchanging Topics
Well... in this I'm more sceptical. I don't believe we can generate any royal amount of energy as often as would please us. This logic that "in time we will find a way" is still a mindset that was generated with the discovery of early "modern physics". In a short time, we discovered a great many things that answered many of the problems society was facing then. It spawned the "illusion" (as I like to call it) that we could solve any problem.
I don't agree. I think that, at some point, we might reach a conclusion "Oh.. this could work, but all we need is an energy source as large as the sun". Or.. in order to harvest the power of source X, we would need a machine that might cost more power and mass than we have available.

I think that falls under the Dyson Sphere/Shell idea.
And I consider the "in time we will find a way" with how transportation has developed (a little over 50 years to go from sorta flying in the atmosphere to shooting something into space). I'd sooner say that the problem for technological development is if humans "allow it". I don't know where I read it, but I remember the prediction that physics (and sciences in general) have two paths in front of them.
The theoretical one, like the CERN experiments with the LHC, and the practical path that allows for money to be made.

Well.. I can understand those two paths, but I also feel there is a limit to what is feasable. In theory, we might some day know how to generate matter and spawn a new planet. In practice, it might not prove possible simply due to the lack of available energy.
Re: Tzeentch's Thread of Everchanging Topics
Generating enough matter to get a new planet would be on the end spectrum of things like generating enough matter to fill a glass with water.Jeanpierre wrote:Well.. I can imagine that such a technology would be halted by certain aspects of an economy.
