National novel writing month Empty National novel writing month

National novel writing month Header

To those initiated, November is not known as November. November is NaNoWriMo, or The National Novel Writing month. I have noticed there are many people in the Defias Brotherhood with an interest in writing. I know from experience that most people with an interest in writing secretly dream about writing a novel. Dont deny it, folks, there's no shame in dreaming big. That's just the thing, though; it sometimes feels like too big a dream. Intimidating. When and where do I start?

NaNoWriMo is part of a possible awnser. Despite the title, entry isn't limited to the US, though the only langauges they accept are English, German, French, Spanish and Dutch. The idea behind NaNoWriMo is to force yourself to write a novel of 50.000 words in one month, under peer pressure. All that matters is the word count. Just disable the reflective part of your brain and produce, produce, produce! Quantity over quality. The project is desgined to enable you to proof to yourself that you have what it takes to actually squeeze out a novel-ammount of words.

I'm one of those guys that secretly wants to write a novel. I'm one of those guys with a seperate folder with ideas for novels. I just never get to writing them down. Last year I was too late but this year I intend to join NaNoWriMo and push out that 50.000 word brainchild. NaNoWriMo is all about the joy of creating. No pressure, just writing for the fun of it. Heck, there's even a guide with tips on how to artifically inflate your word count. Like using really long names, or having your character sing in the car while driving to work.

Anyways, just thought I'd share. Maybe there's a few people here in the community that have been looking for that special something to give them a little booste I have. And if you dont plan on participating you can always have the joy of watching other people toil. I know I had lots of fun lurking in the community last year.

I always wanted to write a novel, but I'm really bad at planning and I change all my ideas.
Trying to write a graphic novel instead ATM.

Then NaNoWriMo is perfect for you! Its quantity of quality baby, anything goes. It doesn't matter how much of your plot you plan ahead or how many times you change your ideas. In fact, when writing a novel the words on the page will never truly coincide with the ideas in your head anyway. One of the slogans of Nano is "No plot? No problem!"

I have to say that this NaNoWriMo is... all in all a rather good thing.
But, I really dislike the authors who just throw out words and hardly think about them. All for the faster books, only to sell. I want authors to take their time with their words and procude quality products. I rather wait a year or two for a good book than get it today as a flawed product. So can't whole heartedly support this even if it is a good initative.

I believe the point of this is not to create an actual sellable manuscript, but more to actually put in the time to sit and write and write as proof, that you -can- do it.

instead of sitting around thinking 'you know what would be great? if i'd finally write this novel i've been thinking off writing

Aye, Amaryl nails it.

I dont think any actual publishable books have ever been written in november during NaNoWriMo. However, some publishable books might show up in their promordial form! Sure they'll require lots of shaving and love, but hey, every book starts out as a bad book. Writing is rewriting.

I'm going to try to proof myself this year I've got what it takes to squeeze out 50,000 words in a month. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

So, this starts today at midnight and ends on November 31th. I still intend to commit myself to this. My current enthusiasm will most likely wane with the weeks, but that should not be a reason to try this. Nothing venture, nothing gained; and who knows, perhaps I will find some source of otherworldy willpower within this apathetic basement dwelling nerd!

As a result I hope to be less available for roleplay this coming month as I dedicate my hobby-time to writing my novel. I'll probably still check in every so often, and I fully expect to be back crawling on my knees sobbing at my own impotence within the week.

Yet...There's always hope, so I hope you guys will cheer me on within the best of your abilities!

-The Darkbringer.

I'd do that, if my writing time wasn't spent on my internship report Neutral

The idea is that despite any and all other occupations and duties you still force yourself to crank out those creative duties. I will still be writing papers for school, I'll still have to take exams and I will still have to teach my own class. There's people much busier than I who will partake in this: housewives with fulltime jobs for example. The reason I love this initiative is because it is a huge slap in your own face to stop whining and take up the pen for real. No more dallying around in excuses and self-pity.

"Oh, I'm so busy! I dont have time to write!" Nay! I shall have none if it. The only thing threatening my resolve is complete apathy and the dimming of interest.

1.666 targeted word average per day.

I tried writing a novel once. It started ok, i guess, but soon it took a rather bad path and i decided to stop it. Now, with this, i might start a new one.

So Sorazal, have you just not updated your word count in a while or are you lagging behind? They say two week is the real killer, you know...
