Crackshot's Battle Ball Compendium - 2nd Edition
Introduction
If you are reading this, that must mean you have bought your own copy of Crackshot’s Battle Ball Compendium. If you haven’t bought it – meaning you have acquired it illegitimately – shame on you! I, Rembus Crackshot, chairman of the BBA (Battle Ball Association), welcome you to the noble sport of Battle Ball! This sport, though modernized in the present, has been played for ages and ages and ages.
During the days of the Gurubashi empire, in example, a similar sport used to be played in which the atheletes used their upper thigh to shoot a ball through a hoop. A major difference, however, is that the losing team was violently decapitated after the match was over. This sport used to be played by the Darkspear Trolls in an advance of the game that was slightly milder.
Battle Ball is also heavily influenced by a game the taurahe of Kalimdor play. This game could be best described as a wrestling match between entire tribes. The goal of this game was to carry a totem across a line drawn in the sand, by all means necessary. The late tauren chieftain, Cairne Bloodhoof, has banned this ancient tradition, however. Too many tauren died during such matches – and, having to deal with the encroaching centaur threat, he deemed it was best to outlaw the game fully.
When these two sports came into contact with each other under Thrall’s reign as warchief, and the forming of the New Horde, Battle Ball was born! Come with me, as I explain to you the basics of this great sport. An exciting journey, indeed!
Rules
A legitimate battle ball team consists of three field players, in addition there is the possibility to bench one additional player. During a match, there may not be more than two teams playing at one time. Any team is expected to wear an identical kit during matches.
The size of the official battle ball pitch has been the subject of debate between the two major battle ball leagues: The Kaja'cola League and the Tough as Nails Division. After a decade of arguments, they have finally decided to agree to disagree. The size of a pitch is now estimated to be between four to eight full grown kodos in length. On the far ends of the pitch, banners are placed by both teams. The objective of battle ball is to press the ball against the banner. You score one point every time you do this. Throwing or kicking the ball against the banner will not grant you any points.
Fouls can happen in two scenarios. Firstly, a foul can be made against the team in possession of the ball. If this is the case, the opposing team must fall back their banner and allow the opposing team to advance ten yards. Secondly, a foul can be made against the team not in possession of the ball. In that case, the opposing team obtains the ball and the game resumes at the location where the foul was made.
Lastly, in battle ball the referee's decision is binding. You are never allowed to (mortally) wound the referee or kill a member of the opposing team. In fact, you are not even allowed to carry weapons on a pitch! After the Warsong Wailers versus Boom! Inc. incident, explosives too have been banned from the game.
