We're not so superficial to care about winning / and losing. Our conquests were mainly carried out to extend the benefits of our advanced and cultured society to others who were suffering from barbaric cultural norms! I don't know about the Dutch, but the French clearly helped countless millions of poor people living in poverty!

We spend our time building ships that didn't have to pay taxes on the trade routes along Denmark while yours had to.

We spend our time becoming an economic superpower during our golden age.

We spend our time getting more money to the point that the average Dutchman was 2 times as wealthy as the average Frenchman.

We spend our time succesfuly placing a king on the British throne (Oh yeah, we did what you never managed to do)

We spend our time making an extra province from the darn sea. You might have conquered your colonies, we made an extra part of our homeland!

We spend our time lounging in our republic before you guys even thought of it!

But I wouldn't say that was the reason the French expanded, mind you, not because of wanting to civilize the people, that might've been the stated reason but the economic bonusses of those colonies can't be ignored, nor can the prestige they add be ignored, nor can the military potential/power they granted be ignored. These factors played just as much a part, if not a larger part, in taking those colonies than a desire to 'civilize' the natives.
