And it wasn't always so that people would get 11 or 111, but that ought to be obvious.

Actually, scratch that. Depends on when you were born and maybe some other factors, but as I am barely capable of addition I will let someone better with numbers explain it more in depth.

Example: My brother was born in 2002, this year he will become 9.

2+9=11

But, next year, he will become 10.
2+10=12

and another edit as I didn't see it was "This year" god darn it.
