Seems to be there's potentially a problem with the Digital Download if people buy it, doesn't start properly. Shame that, as I am pretty sure it's the way I will get the game.

But you see, there's a way around it...

Go to your World of Warcraft\WTF\Config.wtf file.

Look for the "account type" line. Change the bit in "" (will say LK) to CT.

Go next to your World of Warcraft\WTF\Launcher.wtf file.

Do the same as above (it "should" be set to CT anyway).

Start up WoW as usual. The launcher/downloader will boot. It will start downloading stuff, with a different background.

Wait until December. Obtain your game key (digitally, in a shop, however). Play. Profit.

You've already done (most if not all) of the download.

You can thank me later.


Note: The launcher/downloader will now be downloading bits of Cata at various times. You have been warned. However, most of the data exists in the game currently, or will be patched prior to the Expansion launch. Really, the disc you'll get in the box has very little "new" info on it.

Every cinematic in the game so far has been included with a patch or the downloadable client. I don't think Cataclysm's will be any different, especially seeing as preloading the client instead of installing from disc is voluntary.

As for them not being downloadable already; yeah, it's SOP to spread the release of content for preloading out over some time to cut down on network congestion, and even then it will probably remain encrypted until release.

Might just use this trick to download the content few days before the release so that when I go get my copy from a midnight release I can start playing the moment I get back home.

No need to waste those precious minutes that could otherwise be used playing Cataclysm!

I did it and started downloading something. Didn't seem like a massive file though, only like 500 MBs.

Yes, it still works. Even if it didn't you could just change the tags back to LK

So, for the record, is the digital download still borked? So, this tag change is an absolute requirement?

I did the digital download a few days ago and it has been downloading a few things so I should think its fine now

Yeah, I've got the digital download going right now. All seems fine.

Keep in mind, you have to restart the game after cataclysm goes live before all the 80+ stuff will unlock on your client.
