They were fishing and caught it. It's also not hard but has a rather soft body with some shock resistance to...well, being slurped up by some passing fish but rather like stroking a baby. They also say it's a good thing to find while they think they're blessed that they found it.

You have no idea what offer you get if you find a new species: you can get $500'000 and the thing named after you, you also get immortalised in species records. It's pretty awesome.

I'd sell the thing rather than eat it to find it tastes about as nice as a blobfish, or something.
