The Rich and the Destitute; Let's talk money!

Where does your character get his/her money? How does (s)he earn a living? What are his/her living conditions?


Aleric spends time, when able, helping out with heavy lifting and other manual labour around the Cathedral. In return he gets food and shelter. Almost all of his possessions are property of the Crown or on loan to him by the Church or the Argent Crusade.

Mailin gets a yearly allowance from the Kirin Tor that lets her live more or less like a minor noble with posh apartments in Dalaran, a personal gryphon, a horse and arcane trinkets, books, clothes and weapons worth more than what most people make in a life time.

Payment from the government for being a soldier, obviously and selling things forged in free time. Enough for a house for 2+ people, food, raw materials and such.... and a gift once in a while to keep the missus happy ._.

Vectoria use to teach in the Undercity and gained alot of political power within the city because of it, the money soon followed, with her second death she was considered a failure and essentially lost alot of her reputation, former rivals sought to kill her, simply because she could and although it was a difficult time for her, adjusting to her lack of magic and a shifting soul. She still had the remaining dosh from it, she happens to own abit of land in Tirisfal. Nothing fancy, just enough to charge rent to those forsaken who live on it. I would call her invested, rather then well off.


Dalylah is a sailor and a traveler, she does quests for dosh. Simples. She can range from poor to ' Doing alright. '.

Morgeth mooches off Koz. She buys goblin lottery tickets, makes bad deals, buys random scroll and.. begs him for more coin.

Drustai makes her living by making and selling potions, herbal remedies, scrolls, and other magical supplies. Much of this money goes back into her commune, but she does keep a good amount of it for herself to to fund her magical studies and rather extravagant attire.

Timna gets her money from army, and as she rarely uses much at a time, some lies in store.

Coris gets coins from her curiosity shop. Then again, she rarely uses coins other than for necessities.

Daralis gets it from overpaying people needing entertainment, or her blacksmith.

Koz doesn't really have any need for gold in his (private) life, as he's pretty self-reliant. What gold he does have though, is usually gained from his past looting/campaigns and from selling whatever he doesn't need off whatever he kills (pelts and all that). The only thing he usually actually spends money on is, well... what Morg just stated. ,_,

Ledgic - Just relies on money saved from past jobs and Blade earnings.

Omanos - Assisting where he can with small tasks, much like Aleric etc. Since nothing about his actual prominent roles gives him any income.

Eothan - Self sufficient, thief and disgraced noble. Probably my most finanically stable character.

My other character's either survive via mercenary payments, or for my Tanarisi, more or less lives in a tent and doesn't see the point in money.

Odrade - Occasionally steals Ledgic's piggy bank.

JP is a scribe and works as often as duties allow him. In this sense I believe him to have the coin for his needs, but needs to work hard to get more than that. Either his duties are little and he can earn some coin, or he is laden with duties and these duties provide him lodging and food. Those books and robes are actually his only possessions. I even RP him gathering the resources for his books, and making the paper.

I never imagined JP as having much to spare, but... Once upon a time a Dwarf died and left JP a house. I didn't RP selling it, sorry, but I imagined he did and kept the gold in the bank as his backbone should he ever want to buy a tiny house on his own. I'm still uncertain if I'll go through with the plan. I don't imagine JP as actually being in a position to possess such things.

Trave is a mercenary, so he's got a decent payment from the Blades for Hire whom he occasionally, or used to, work for when he could.

But his biggest income is from doing dirty jobs for Pirates such as the Kalimdor Corsairs, whom happily pay him greatly.

Ben served in Northrend, and has as a trained knight from DoL and took his share of the spoils, but of course that isn't exactly known to anyone except me

Vasilije gets what he needs from serving the Cult, as in lodging and what now a Forsaken might eat.
And naturally the regular sold of a professional Militia officer.

Krogon makes his money from his Weapon smithing, and being so good at it his pieces sell rather well and for quite alot. that said, he tends to slep rough, cook what he hunts and never spends any of his coin on lavish things.

Antle is quite wealthy, even if he works in the Cartel he has quite a bit of personal business on the side. His personal business is mostly about smuggling and selling illegal goods. He rarely spends his money though, usually just letting it pile up.

Aedis (Línn) earns fairly little, all she does is fight for the light. However she comes from a rich family, so she survives. Personal gains and gold matters little to her.

Tillie earns her gold from her overprotective big brother and recently working at an illegal store, she normally spends it all on booze, cigarettes and the similar.

Emily just lives on what she has earned in the past and what she got from her family before leaving them.

Soolie earns about nothing, all she does is smash stuff and get into trouble. What items she has she have made out of scraps that she has found here and there, or taken from her victims.

Frazl's way of earning money is quite easy: At the brutal expense of others.

Nessra gets along well, monetarily speaking. Most of her current income comes from the government, as she works in a military unit. She also makes a few coins on the side by brewing poisons and antidotes. Her husband, Kristeas, pays for all of their living expenses, so the only thing she really has to worry about is how many expensive dresses she can buy every week.

Anegra doesn't have any money. If she really needs money, she will dive into one of the many wells in Gilneas, and confiscate coins people may have thrown there ages ago. Stealing unguarded items, such as flour and sugar, is not uncommon to her either.

Kih'rin - Being a halfbreed he's not really a popular choice for employers, so he makes his money hunting monsters at the request of towns and cities. He reads a lot and will sell the books he doesn't enjoy or doesn't find useful, some works of litterature he hoards turning out to be very valuable.

Aside from that he does whatever cliché fantasy character would do for money, selling on rare materials he finds from hunting and such.

Kurella - She's a rich bitch, well she is based off Cruella Deville... Owns a series of fashion stores in Goblin settlements, with a few taboo investments in the black market; specifically vendoring weapons she's asked her team of sheepish scientists to craft for her.

While she won't admit it, she had to sell half of her remaining buisness empire after the destruction of Kezan as that was where her warehouses and major stores were. The insurance paid out quite handsomely... the money is a PART of this character though so it's no suprise she's loaded.

Mikhael - He's a Worgen Druid, gets more free transportation than a pensioner. Works his Harvest Cleric powers on the farms in westfall, doesn't get paid for it. Barely scrapes by and is funded only by the remaining fortune of his family that's divided between him and his two sisters, treats himself to a stay at an inn for a bath once in a while.

I'm going to use Exaythe's topic on this as a guideline for my active characters in this matter.

Gahalla
Gahalla lives in a household of three, the doctor herself, her adopted daughter and an elderly nursemaid, on the canal-streets a few minutes from the cathedral square. Her home is a small apartment of three rooms rented, at a discount, from the tenant.
Gahalla rarely charges for her services as a doctor or surgeon, finding it immoral to demand payment for treating people's suffering. She primarily recieves her income from selling potions and writing articles on theoretical magic for the tower, as well as the odd donation from former patients and a small stipend from the Church of Light. She does have some money tucked away in the bank for emergencies, but other than that she does not have much.

Therefore I reason Gahalla earns about 3 silvers a day (thus 21 a week, 84-105 a month and 12 gold throughout the year). Before expenses. She's probably ending up with about 1 silver and 25 coppers after food, rent, work-related expenses, the maid's salary and other daily expenses. Putting her in the "artisan" class (lower middle-class in modern terms).

Zinkle owns a small brewery in Booty Bay, ran in his place by Orville, his partner and brewmaster. He supplies some inns and pubs, a small but decent business. In secrecy, he's involved in drug-dealing, smuggling, gambling and extortion, which actually gross a lot money. The majority of the income is usually reinvested or used to pay his associates. Besides clothing, his expenses are few; as for room and food, he lives in the Dwarven District for free as a parasite.

Sophyra 'owns' a tea-importing business, meaning she reaps the rewards and makes occasional descision as well as visits suppliers, captains, distributors at regular intervals to assure it all sticks together while somebody else oversees the actual running for her. Then she works for the Dieudonne Seal, getting some pay from that too. She reaps some small benefits from her other investments...oh, and receives jewels, pretty dresses and expensive drinks and perfumes from her *cough* friends *cough*. Her expenses are equally extravagant, as she tries to keep dressed after the latest fashion, have flashy jewels as -well- as stay in the High Society by throwing (and paying for) occassional banquette or party. And, lets not forget, her expenses for all the diabolic reagents, books and scrolls for her witchy practices. So yes, big earner and big spender. According to my money-thread, that means she probably earns between 60 and 100 silvers a day, with occasional huge boosts (like when she sold Arador's bow to Stromgarde for a truly royal ransom)

Exaythe earns nothing, instead withdrawing some petty spending money from the commune or the aldor to pay for ships and inns. When she is touring, she probably lives rather poorly.

Aishling is on the magisterium pay-roll, but also on the one of the Grand Embassy, so she earns for two on her own. She also has a new boyfriend that's also a noble. So money should never really be an issue.

Aithon earns a Blood Knight salary, just enough to cover his own expenses.

Delmy is a traveling haberdasher, going where hats, ribbons and buttons are needed most with her faithful knapsack.

She earns just about enough to fund her travels and work towards her lifetime dream: making Odrade fashionable one day.

Eodan gets paid in the army, rarely uses any of it so most of it gets stored seeing as he hunts for his own food. He doesn't need much.

Calath goes to his mother if his own army wage ain't enough. Not really taking care of how much he spends compared to what he gains, might live above his budget most of the time.

Nathaniel is a quickhand thief, he steals valuables and sells it for coin, quite a meager living but he seems to just manage getting enough for food and some extra most of the time.
