Photoshop
Right. I love photoshop. It's great for many purposes, as we all know.
I've used it at school and I'm familiar with how to use it... but I have no idea what type of photoshop product to buy. There are many different types it seems...
Anyone able to help?

Well, first of all, what are you looking to do with it?

The quote pyramid stops now. Post if you have something to add, not otherwise.

Re: Photoshop
But aye, my advise would be to just go with the freebies. The extras are not worth the money.

Re: Photoshop
Freebies like what? And Ataris, to answer your question, something along he line of merging and editing a collection of photos and pictures to create them into RP items, such as posters, newspapers, and advertisements etc etc.

I had a good downloaded one that did this, worked like a dream. Will look it up and see if I can find it again.

Though I suppose photoshop is capable of doing the things you want, the superior program for creating newspaper / posters etc is adobe InDesign.

Rip the shit out of every program suggested, use them. See what you like and if you earn more then 15 euros an hour consider buying it(lol).

Re: Photoshop
Anyway, thanks guys for the info. ^_^ Unfortunately, still two problems:
Where the hell do I get InDesign (or CS5, as I have seen that's apparently quite good)?
Also, you talk of 'freebies'... where do I get them? Links would be appreciated. I've tried googling, and found various places, but I'm a complete viralphobe when it comes to downloading applications onto my laptop. So, if anyone could give a reccomended link...

Re: Photoshop
Most of Adobe's products are available for trial here.
CS5 is not yet up, but CS4 is just as good for beginners, so you don't really need to worry about that. There are free programs that mirror the functions of inDesign and Photoshop, though I'm not well versed in all that.
I think most of what the others are referring to is piracy, which is illegal and something we won't discuss here.

- Spoiler:
wich still is basically the same as an theft since there's still a copy of the game that's not paid for.
Anyway if you don't want to bother buying the program(s) I think Ataris suggestion is the better one.

That's like saying if you make a table the exact same as one in a shop, then it's theft. Ah well...
I suppose the Copy Rights and Patents Act was made for a reason. And we should go by it.

That's two totally different things... You created the table by your own and it just happends to look like a table made by another person ( like alot of games look alike and have similiar gameplay ).
And while you may not steal an actual copy you still ignore the hard work and probably high cost it took to develop that game / program.

99% of the people whining about piracy are hypocrits, the other 1% are mothers.
Ps. Yes its stealing, your god is also against it.

Re: Photoshop
Unless you're into heavy editing and manipulation of photos/images, I think Photoshop CS5 is overkill. It's a very heavy/huge program and the improvement you get compared to lighter versions is very limited (considering your planned use). Granted, Puppet Warp, can make people do weird things and the HDR functionality looks really cool, but for poster/banners it's not really that useful.
You could try the Adobe CS4 (or even CS3) package. It has both InDesign and Photoshop (along with other nice Adobe software for image and text editing/presentation). Both are available as free trial versions.
Seeing as your main needs seems to be image creations (pictures and text), I also have to suggest the you look for other desktop publishing software. There's a lot out there for free. Scribus is one - Open source and works pretty much like InDesign. MS Publisher is also nice - but not free. Open Office is a nice open source alternative to Publisher.
Good luck ^^
