I'm sorry Corleth, but the Kinks/Small Faces/Troggs/etc. were way cooler than the Beatles. The first were true rock and roll bands, the latter made catchy songs for middle class teenagers - and their parents, sadly Razz

I'm no huge fan of the Beatles and they definitely have a lot of weak, overrated tracks but their experimental nature, output, overall creativity and psychedelic moments easily place them above the bands you mentioned, in my opinion. However, the one thing that is sadder than these parents and dad-rock loving teenagers placing the Beatles on such a high pedestal is those that somehow feel the need to lampoon or understate their material simply due to the annoyance of said dad-rock loving kids.

Nonetheless, Frank Zappa was doing more (and better) out-there and experimental music than pretty much anyone in the sixties.

I don't see all this creativity to be honest, they just did in a catchier way what other bands have been doing for years. They weren't all that ahead of their times either: for example, when they released Abbey Road in 1969, the Who published Tommy, the first rock opera ever; the Stooges and the MC5 were practically inventing punk rock with their debuts, The Stooges and Kick Out The Jams; the Velvet Underground published one of the most inspiring and experimental albums ever, The Velvet Underground & Nico, and the list goes on.

In my opinion, the Beatles are way more interesting as a cultural phenomenon than a musical one, as well as a good example of how a damn good producer like George Martin is important to achieve success in the music industry.

Aye, but there isn't anything wrong with them doing it in a catchier way. In fact, I would say that is one reason to praise them. It isn't easy to do experimental(ish) music and be catchy. Cannot see the creativity? Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which was released before all the albums you listed.

Like I've said though, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, as well The Velvet Underground both usurp them in terms of quality. This, however, is more than just a cultural phenomenon.
